Title: Odd soft 'thud thud' noise
Post by: alexmccabe on February 21, 2013, 11:17:45 am
While driving along there is a soft, barely audible and rhythmic 'thud thud' noise. It's a deep noise so it's hard to tell where exactly it is originating. I've come to the conclusion that due to the frequency of the noise that it is something to do with the wheels.

At high speed I can't hear it because the engine noise is too loud, but if I strain it is still there but at an increased pace.

Am I correct in thinking that it is the wheels, and if so, what in that area could be causing that issue?

On another note, the engine makes a loud ticking noise. What is that?

Wheel bearing?

Wheel bearing?

I originally thought that, but wouldn't it be continuous instead of once per rotation?

Mine had the same thing.  When I slowed down I could hear a thumping noise.  Turned out the missus wanted to get out of the boot.

Hope this helps.

Possibly.  Could you just ignore it until it goes away?

She is fairly tenacious...it's still going. It's been weeks!

In all seriousness though, if anyone has any ideas that would be great! =]

Have you checked all the tyres for anything obvious? Might be worth going to your local tyre place so they can give them the once over. Could be one gone out of shape.

Check all the simple things like no slack wheel nuts etc (people still steal wheels up here) then for that type of noise I would check the front anti roll bar bushes - really needs to be on a ramp to check for that though.
Title: What tyres to buy?

Right, I took the car to the tyre doctors and he said that the two rear tyres are completely bald on the inside edge and have gone lumpy. Hence thud thud. I don't have to change them yet though.

So now, what tyres do people recommend. Ideally Michelin or Goodyear, but if anybody raves about any other make, let me hear it =]

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's then full alignment & geometry setup so they don't wear like your old ones. :happy2:

They're excellent tyres. Had them on my Leon FR. Quite a few of the lads over at Seatcupranet are running them on Stage 2+ Cupras with great results.
