Title: Alloy refurb opinions
Post by: nads1_uk on February 22, 2013, 01:44:57 pm
I'm after some opinions. I've got monza shadows on my black mk 6 gti. They are in need or a refurb. The options I've got are;
1 diamond cut finish as per oem for £288. Will take 5 days.
2 powder coat black then paint the faces hyper Crome and then lacquer for £350. Will take one day.

I love the diamond cut but I'm worried about them getting white worm and having to go through this again. However my concern with the second option is how close to oem they'll look. Will the paint finish make the car look cheap?

All opinions welcome

Andy

Go for the second option as that is what I am considering! Much longer lasting finish IMO

It was at a company called Bettablast in Newcastle. Original price was £390 but I got discount because the company I work for does business with them

I used Bettablast recently and I'm happy with the service and finish.

My answer is go with your gut feeling as you'll always regret making the wrong choice.

I know what you mean but both options have theirs negatives, diamond cut doesn't last and painting might look crap.

Are you not away down the country though bud?

Some places have wheels you can use, but same day return is usually possible regardless of where you go.

What type of finish did you go for?  Any photos?

They look spot on mate.  :happy2:

My 2 concerns with painting is a) how close to the diamond cut finish will hyper crome look and b) will a company be able to mask it right so there is a sharp edge between the hyper Crome and the black inserts?

I know what you mean.

Have you spoken to Bill? He's a service orientated guy and could put your mind at ease, maybe he has examples to show you?

Thanks, happy with them having got the hideous winters off!

I've only spoken to bill through emails. I'll probably go and see him and speak to him directly. I think deep down I would prefer the diamond cut finish but know it doesn't last. If I can get 90% of the look then I would be more than happy to get them painted. Thing is you don't know what they're going to look like until they're finished.

I got mine done a year ago.  I chose smoked chrome (on a mk5) as almost identical to diamond cut in appearance, and they still look superb.  No whiteworm and not a moment's regret.

Do yours have the grey inserts as well?  Any photos on the car?

I've justed edited my earlier post - it was only last year.  The inserts are darker, but they are blended into the smoked chrome to match the original diamond cut finish on the mk5.

Looking good mate. Is there a sharp line between the Crome and the grey?  That's what I would want to replicate an oem finish.

No - mine are blended in.  It's what I asked for, to match the original finish.

I was unsure whether to get mine powder coated, but I'm so glad I did! I like the original diamond cut look, but if anything I prefer mine now they have been powdercoated. I got them done in smoked chrome and I love the way they look, it changes depending on light and angle. I don't have different coloured inserts anymore, but to be honest I think it suits them better as it is now.

Looking good fella. You don't happen to know how much lighter hyper crome is do you??

Thanks. Sorry I wouldn't know that. I know the smoked chrome is not an exact science and is never exactly the same twice, so it can be altered to suit. The test wheel my refurb place made up for me to look at was darker than I wanted, so I just asked them to lighten mine up a bit for me.

No worries cheers anyway. I think I'm going to have to pay the powdercoaters a visit to see what they say.

Cheers for all the advice

You're looking for something more along these lines....

to be honest its a PITA to get right... powdercat black and over spray... masking off is really difficult surprised on your price... mine were originally costed at £100 a corner...

They're the ones I keep coming back too!  If I'm right yours are also smoked crome faces. I'm just worried that the hyper crome looks too blingy and the smoked looks too dark - for my taste. Like you say the main issue is masking off for the crome finish but if they do it right it'll look spot on and eliminate any white worm issues in the future.

was at a meet the other week and to be honest they dont look as good as the d-cut look... but no worries about white worm :happy2:

I actually wanted a more chrome look but the guy sprayed them the wrong colour... kinda grown to like them
