Title: Problem: Engine dies a couple of seconds after ignition
Post by: jsklair on February 23, 2013, 07:53:45 pm
I turned my car on this afternoon, and after a few seconds the revs died to nothing.

I tried again a few times, with the same result.

I thin tried with my right foot planted on the accelerator, this made it rev louder at the start; but it still died a second or two later.

One thing to note, the rev meter did not move once, it was planted on zero.

The guy driving the recovery truck had a look, and said it was most likely a dead fuel pump.

Does anyone else have a better idea?

Sounds like an immobiliser related issue to me.

Sounds like an immobiliser related issue to me.

Now that you mention it, I remember the hazard lights going off when I last turned the car off (the alarm horn has not worked for a few months, so no noise).

If it is the immobiliser,  how do I remobilise it?

put the key in and turn,  does the immo light go out or flash?

The immobiliser light goes out after a second.

Does this mean the immobiliser is not the issue?

A fuse blown on said fuel pump ?

I replaced the fuel pump fuse (fuse 27 (15 amp) as per the manual), and still no joy.

it is not an immo issue then,  you need your car to be scanned.

Do I have to go to a dealer, out well most specialists have the required scanning equipment?

Look on this website. Look at the VCDS register and see if a forum user can scan it for you that's local to you perhaps  :happy2:

Thanks for that.   I've checked there's no one in the Slough area.  :sad1:

I'll probably have to for it to the specialist in it's state.

Is there anything else obvious that it could be?

Would a fuel pump problem stop the rev meter from working?
