Title: Hi all, going back to VW, looking to purchase GT tdi 170
Post by: estorilben on February 24, 2013, 05:06:37 pm
Hi all,

Been reading topics on here for a few weeks etc, as I'm looking to get myself a MK5 GT tdi 170 this week. Currently got a Mini Cooper S, which has now been sold, so looking to get back into a VW.

Only had one dub before and that was one of my favourite ever cars, a MK2 GTI, in Tornado Red.

Really wanted a GTI but I'm doing 60 miles a day now for work, so really need a diesel.

Any topics/threads you guys think I should read before buying? Anything particular to look out for?

Thanks and hello!

Ben

look out for the dreaded DPF filter, it cost my brother £1000 to have it removed, the car was constantly going into limp mode. if youre unsure of what it is do a search, lots of topics about it.

The place I'm getting my GT tdi from is servicing it before I collect it as its due, but as the car has covered 74k they asked if I'd like them to do cambelt as well? Said it would normally be 300 but would do it for 200 as they were already servicing it, is that worth doing & is it a decent price? Never had one done before....

Yes that is cheap but pay to have the water pump also done, and ask if that is a timing kit (not just a belt!), hopefully it is a decent brand/OEM one.

Ok thanks I'll ask..... If it was just the belt, how much extra would it usually be for the timing kit & water pump?? Or are they usually part of the price?

Have they done golf timing belts before? they require a bit of specialist vw experience and tools over normal run of mill belt only cars. Citroen dealer fitted deisel pump 5 teeth out on my old MK4  :fighting:
Just phoned Halfrauds £431.62 for belt kit + £50 for water pump.
THIS IS DEARER than vw dealer at £459 all in.......

Cheers guys, there gonna get back to me on costs for water pump as well. They said they'll have a look at it but that it doesn't always necessarily need doing?

theres nothing to look at really, but if the water pump fails it takes the cam belt with it, valves meet pistons and
will the pump last another 80,000 miles till the next belt change??? :scared:

If you don't have the pump replaced at least have it removed inspected and a new oring seal fitted!

Also consider replacing the poly belt since they have to take it off to to the timing belt - so no addional labour just the price of a poly belt.
