Title: Just exactly how much power can you get from a 2.0TFSI K04?
Post by: Hurdy on February 26, 2013, 08:01:19 pm
How far can you go?

Engine power mods only.......

CDL block
K04 turbo
90mm downpipe, then 3" straight through decat exhaust.
Loba? HPFP
CAI? Type? Air feed location?
Water methanol injection...make? Single or direct port?
Throttle pipe
Intercooler...type?
Hosing...which ones
Catch can or just BSH PCV fix?
DV...stock or aftermarket?
Boost controller or ECU control?
Porting?
LPFP upgrade?
Okada's ...worth it or not?
Competition gasket and head studs needed?
Runner flap delete on intake manifold?
Spark plugs..OEM or NGK's?
Sump, baffled or not needed?
Internals needed? Pistons and rods or just rods?

Any more?

LOL - forget NOS. Although I guess that would be the limit! :rolleye:

I'm talking bolt-ons and air flow etc and yes WMI!

depends on the dyno then  :signLOL:

I'd say just over 400 with WMI and as much boost as you can get?

Nick @ R-Tech managed 404bhp and something like 460lb ft from K04 & WMI before he hit the limits of the LPFP on James's. then de-tuned to the 378bhp / 450lbft to keep it sweet until he could get the fuel in

I'm guessing NOS would give even more. . .

Yes NOS gave me 438bhp and 510lbft on my old ED30!

Unfortunately it costs around £1 a second to run and empties two tanks in 100 seconds!

Okay, I'll put some mods up in the first post and let's build a virtual mk5golfgti.co.uk K04 Monster :jumpmove:

NOT using NOS!

I guess it depends on whether you want to do valve train and bottom end to make it rev.

Is there anything in the K04 after 7k rpm's though Ian? From everything I've seen the K04 is done by then, in fact before!

Fair enough John. If the K04 can't shift the air then scrap that.

Nology silver tip plugs gapped to 0.75,   Stopped me burning plugs when reving to 7k  :drinking:

My input...

CDL block  (best block)
K04 turbo ( adjust actuator, makes you hold boost longer ( you could set it to 30psi top end but it would not make it as it blows the westgate open))
90mm downpipe, then 3" (best you can get)
Loba? HPFP ( APR people say, but i run the cheap option and has not failed me)[/
CAI? Type? Air feed location?  ( I have tested a evom intake + having no intake and it makes the same power)
Water methanol injection...  ( stage 3 snow kit running duel, with tb spacer.  Gives a better spray)
Throttle pipe ( BSH )
Intercooler...type? THS < same + remove ac rad
Hosing... - NEUSpeed pipes
Catch can or just BSH PCV fix?  ( i run a catch can just to catch excess meth)
DV...stock or aftermarket? Forge Oversized? (Stock Dv works fine no need  for anything else)
Boost controller or ECU control? ( ECU also does the job fine get far more control)
Porting? ( someone done this and made an extra 10bhp)
LPFP upgrade? ( 100% needed over 390bhp unless you decresse the torque)   (RS3/ttrs pump works well)
competition gasket and head studs needed? (not needed for k04)
Runner flap delete on intake manifold? ( No point for k04 - only for big turbo)
Spark plugs..OEM or NGK's? (Nology silver)
Internals needed? Pistons and rods or just rods? ( CDL take everything the k04 can give)
Camshafts - (might get a extra power top end)

I think the max you will get is around 390-430

As much as i like the K04 it has 2 weaknesses:

1. It trails off in the 5000+ range
2. It has with most tunes a torgue peak that destroys a normally nice curve.

That being said James is right in his assesment, "he of all should know  :signLOL: "
However a DD of a well setup LO380 would be great to see  :happy2:

I'm not giving away any of Nicks secrets but how you spool the turbo / how many times makes a big difference on the top figure

What about stroker kits to slightly increase capacity?

Hmm, a possibility, but not sure on how much benefit there would be. I'd guess a 0.2 litre strokes kit would yield an extra lump of power, but maybe the K04 would still be the bottleneck. It would certainly make it less reactive than a 2litre.
