Before this car I had a MK4 GTi 8v non-turbo. It was slow, but it was a nice car.

Eventually it just got too much to keep it running and I thought that it was as good as time as any to upgrade. I wanted something with more power.
Enter the MK5. After much deliberation between TDi 140 and a GTi, I had to go for power over economy.

Love it. But not gonna stay like that for long. Took it to the body shop today...
So, as it currently stands. I'll be out of the country for a bit, but after that gonna get some lows.

Thanks, they were loading on one of my computers so I didn't realise. I checked on the other and they weren't. Uploaded elsewhere now.

I see them now :)
Bit of tidying up going on then?
Oh and polish your exhaust, makes it faster ;)

Thanks! Can't wait til it's painted! It's obviously out of action for a few days. Makes travelling 25m to work each day fun. Haha

I really did not like the crappy textured plastic they throw on these things. Ruins them I think.
Yeah it adds an extra 10BHP doesn't it? :happy2:

I'm loving that I am getting updated from the body shop as they do parts. Can see how it is progressing.
One of the wing mirrors was orange for some reason, and I had to buy a new one as it was cracked

So that's day two. It will be finished tomorrow, and I can't wait. I'm having to drive one of the new shape Ford Fiestas, and it is horrible. Haha

Looking great mate, nothing beats fresh paint!
Looking into getting my rear valance cc too.

Thanks. Yeah tell me about it, I have no idea what they were thinking. The red is a slightly different shade on the sprayed bits, it annoys me, but I will *hopefully* get used to it. Body shop said they had a hard time matching it as some parts had been resprayed at some point...
-
looking good :drinking:
how long did it take smoothing out the textured surfaces?

He had the car for three days, so a pretty quick turn around from horrible texture to full paint

Got a new DV for the car. So much nicer to drive now. There was a little oil in the plug, so I'm gonna have to get a PCV soon too.
The old DV

So I got in contact with the guy who painted the parts on my car as they're not the right colour. I thought I would see if I could live with it, but a couple weeks on and with many comments from people about it, I can't. He seemed annoyed at me for bringing it up. The quality of the work is great, but the colour is just wrong... He said for me to take the car in this week... to do what I don't know, but I hope it can be sorted.
The colour is more pink than red, however it is hard to get a picture that shows this off.
I know matching colours can be hard, but he said the car had some paint work done before, not that I can tell as it all matches.
-
i think Tr is going to be the worst colour to match.
you'd have thought someone would have invented some techy light reflection thingy, that could print out the exact RGB colour of the paint on the car, and then automatically mix it up...

I heard Halfords do that, how true that is I don't know. Anyway, after a short discussion he gave me the colour chips and told me to match it, I found one that is almost exact and he agreed to respray. I wasn't expecting that, so I would say great service. He also said he hates Red.
-
yea I had some issue's with respray of parts in red. Firstly I got a key mark re sprayed and although the colour match was spot on there was a different undercoat so when the sun shone on it it suddenly went another colour cos you could almost see through the paint. They re did it for me and now the whole panel for me and now the shade of red is slightly out!
Nice car btw. Similar colour wheels to mine!!

God paint is a pain in the arse. I have a key mark in there, but I'm gonna save that for when I go about getting bits fixed or a full respray...
Thanks! Though there are lots of marks you can't see in the images...
-
I imagine is hard to match the paint exact as the top part of the bumper is 7 years old now. Paint fads, changes over time. I know when I had my Mk4 golf their were 7 different shades of the paint code LA7W (Reflex Silver). Might be the same with TR.

There are 11/12 shades of Tornado Red, so I am told... I know it is hard to match as it weathers and fades, but you can get close. The colour he painted it was a bit too far off for my liking, and he even agreed it looked off. In an ideal world I'd have repainted the whole car, but I don't have that kinda money... I know paint is not an easy business, but I'm glad he was willing to sort it out. Not many places would do that.
-
Wow, 11 shades!!
Sounds like he will give it another go for you. Worth getting the whole rear bumper done? Maybe he could blend it in then.
Looking to get my plastics colour coded soon.

He said that if I were to get the bumper done at the same time it's another £150, and I don't have that... I'll just get the colour chip code off of him for future reference.

In the little black pot is a cam-follower =] I've had nothing but grief from my family about buying cruise control, but whatever. I do a lot of miles and it will make things slightly easier.

Picking my cam follower up this weekend mate.
How much was the cruise?

nice list :happy2:
what headunit you got in at the mo?
-
nice list (to start with)
Helios's weigh more than the planet Earth, Neuspeed's are very nice and a lot lighter than your OEM wheels, helping the unstrung weight and overall feel of the handling.
Valeo LED units look really good and light output is a marked improvement over the standard clusters. LED Door Warning Lights and LED Interior Lights make a big difference for a small outlay as does the boot pop (when it works).
:happy2:

It's a Kenwood single din with rear USB and iPod direct control. It's a good unit but looks out of place in the MK5.

Well, the car needs a full respray, but I'm not putting that on the list. Too expensive. Haha.
I love the look of the Helios but the Neuspeeds are very similar, especially at 19".
Everything else is pretty standard and not much exciting

Right. So I had major issues with the guy who painted the parts on my car. Let me say I am really not happy with his service. I went to see him before I went on holiday to America for three weeks back in April and asked for the car to be booked in five weeks after for a respray. He got quite annoyed at me for calling him up on the wrong colour and "everyone thinks they're an effing professional" among other things.
Five weeks later I go back. He doesn't have the time do my car, and asks me to come back on 3rd June, which I do. He is careful to remind me a lot that this is costing him a lot of money, but "look I don't have the time to do it". Asks me to go back on 1st July. Which again I do.
He starts telling me he will respray the parts, but not taking them off the car. I think I was quite right in feeling a little cautious about this and questioned him as to whether he can get a decent finish. He gets angry at me "look mate, I don't have time for this". So he still hadn't actually booked me an appointment. Oh and he was reminding me again about how much money he was gonna lose.
After a little too-ing and frow-ing he suggested that he gives me a cheque for the money because he just wants done with it. I agreed because I do not trust this guy anymore. So my car is still the wrong colour. What a fecking nightmare.

Ehhh????? Is this guy having a bloody laugh!!
You've been far too kind here. I hope he's gave you all your money back?
If not, you've been done over as you will have to pay the same amount (if not more) for it to be rectified.
No wonder the body repairs industry gets such a bad name with these kind of morons.
-
what area you live in?....you should name and shame this guy on all the forums.
-
Looks good mate.. Im new to the Tornado Red GTI club too so will get some pics of mine when i get chance as only picked it up today.. Love the list of mods too, very much like my list in my head.. Will be keeping an eye on this thread for some tips and see how yours develops :)

He did give me all the money back that I paid him, which is lucky. I should've just gone to the guy I have dealt with before. Would have been easier, but this guy was £50 cheaper. I know what you mean as well. He used cheap paint that is now chipped worse than the 8 years of stones on the bumper...

I live in Devon, the guy was in Newton Abbot. Ultimate Car Creations. I don't like naming and shaming, but if you think it warrants it...

Thanks man, you will enjoy it. They're great cars. I won't be doing much to it as I've just moved house and I live further from my job. I do near 65miles a day now. It's about £240 fuel a month. Haha

So I thought it was all done and done, but nope. I just received a text from him written in bad spelling and grammar saying that he has noticed I haven't had my car re-painted, and that he wants some of his money back for the materials. I had every intention of using the money he refunded me to get it painted, I even had a date booked with another person, but fell on some hard times and had to use the cash to you know, live.
I'm not really sure what I should do here to be honest as I am still not too flush with cash at the moment. I do want the parts repainted at some point, but at the moment I am just trying to get by... I don't have anything spare I can give him, and I don't want to. I don't feel I owe him anything. Do i?

Unlock phone,
Type 'Do one!'

Don't know why you feel that you owe the guy anything. He painted your car the wrong colour!!!
-
I cant believe im reading this. Seriously bro, you dont owe him anything. I dont know why your even thinking about him or his sh1tty paint shop. The money is compensation for doing a sh1t job, end of!!
If he contacts you again just use the words -"trading Standards" and watch him back the f*ck righ off...
You will get the car painted in your own time when YOU feel you have found the correct person / garage to do it.

I didn't think I did owe him anything. It's just annoying as I thought I was done with him and now he wants an argument. I've decided to ignore him, just easier that way. He texts in such a horrible way that it is hard to understand. Haha.
Thanks guys for reassuring me :)

Went down to get my ignition coil recall done. Those lovely people down there not only did that but they cleaned it, inside and out, as well as giving it a health check.
Well I WAS saving up to get some nice modifications, but this health check has other ideas. I need new headlights, new front discs, brakes and backplate, a CV boot and an oil breather pipe. There goes all the lovely things I had planned :(
-
Please don't take that at face value and get a second opinion from an independent. If you can elaborate on why they told you all those parts need replacing people on here will be able to help you check yourself. They probably washed it with a sponge full of grit as well.
-

The clip on the CV boot is missing. The CV boot isn't expensive, so I don't mind having the whole thing replaced. The discs are below min thickness and the pads are worn 50%. Front backplates are rusted away and they advise new. The oil breather pipe is leaking.
-
Ok fair enough. Nothing wrong with 50% worn pads but should replace them when replacing discs providing they are below minimum thickness. Sorry for my cynicism but I don't trust main dealers.
Why do your headlights need replacing? I would still take it to a good independant if you plan on having all the work carried out as will be much cheaper.

They're chipped and scratched beyond repair. I was gonna do it anyway tbh haha. I am gonna get the parts from dealers and either fit them myself or get a garage to do it.

Some nice progress so far fella :happy2:

Thanks man, I have indeed got plans (Bilstein B12), but if I do I need narrow tyres.

Boring stuff, but I had my passenger side CV joint replaced, both front backing plates and the oil breather pipe. The CV joint did have some play in it, though it wasn't bad.
