Title: New member, cant decide on edition 30 or not?
Post by: alfboden on March 01, 2013, 09:17:15 am
Hi, I'm hoping to buy a gti within the next month. Still haven't decided on wether or not to get an edition 30 or not. What price should I be looking at for an unmodified example with average miles on the clock?

Welcome

Ed30 will cost more than a standard gti. It's a lovely car and has quite a few differences over standard. If you can afford/justify the extra cost go for it.

The stock gti is a great car too - you won't feel short changed if you don't buy an Ed30.

I was in the same boat last year.  In the end I went for the 30.  Mainly for the extra bit of power, the rarity of them (compared to the standard GTI) and the additional standard features (heated seats, dual zone climate etc).

However, I would have liked full leather and the 18" Monza alloys from the GTI, the later simply because they are far easier to clean!

Welcome along.  :drinking:

Are you planning having the engine tuned? If so, I'd suggest an Eddy, more headroom in the K04 Turbo'd car than the K03 Turbo'd standard GTI.

I'll probably just have it mapped but the extra overhead on the ed 30 turbo is useful, can't go too crazy on it as I'm supposed to buying a house this year. Seems like a good source of info here!

Fairly standard spec I think but looks like an updated stereo??

That's an MFD2 - the old SatNav which is very outdated now.

Don't like the 30 badges on the outer door, but otherwise a nice looking car. Could always sell on the plate  :happy2:

Ed.30 (k04) boosts later than the standard GTI (K03), it has a different turbo K04 vs K03, the K04 maps on stage 1 to around 280-300bhp, where as the K03 on the same stage to around 240-250bhp... interestingly they both make similar torque on stage 1; in the region of 300lb/ft depending on tuner.  The K04 is definitely the tuners choice; but a well setup K03 isn't a slow motor.

Looks ok!  :drinking:

Low miles but still a lot for what it is,good old main dealers.  It's got Highline, Multi Function Steering wheel, Sat Nav (although a basic OLD one). Lots of stuff (if you want it) can be retrofitted, from the relatively cheap Cruise Control to Xenons. Not sure about the Stuck On 30's either.

Make sure its had its Cambelt and Waterpump changed as it should be done at 4 years or 60k miles, whichever comes first.

Looks like it was owned by someone who knew what it was as they got hold of the build number plaque already.

When you say outdated, does that mean s**t? Is it simple to add iPhone and Bluetooth connectivity?

So would you recommend replacing the head unit?

I know 11k is relatively dear, I would be looking at getting at least £500 off hopefully more. Taking into account the low miles and vw guarantee (not sure how good it is) it seemed pretty comparable to the ed 30's I'd seen for sale on here, flebay, PH and autotrader.

What price should I be looking to pay, is it worth trying negotiate some kit like retrofit cruise control?

Sorry for all the questions the help has been much appreciated!

I would say that for that mileage the car is well priced and good value for money at £11k

I think that was cheap for a dealer forecourt, hence why it sold so fast.

I would have expected a VW to sell that car at over £12k perhaps £12495 . VW Warranty is always nice for a year . But you pay for it in the price , you can get an equivalent warranty elsewhere if you pay .

Very well priced, for the miles and spec, would probably have expected that car to be at £12k at a dealers. Car even had winter pack selected - headlight washers !

I also thought that was cheap for main dealer price. Condition may have been poor in reality tho.

Good luck with the search...

Don't think so - It wouldn't be sold as VW approved or even be on their forecourt ??

I've saw lots of the main dealer approved cars, they are not pristine in most cases. They only need to have full VW service history and be in average nick to be put on the forecourt.

Funnily enough the worst condition car at a VW dealer I have seen was an edition 30 I saw a couple of years ago. It had a 1/2" hole in the drivers seat bolster!

So I picked up an ed 30 last weekend. I'll get some pictures up after I've cleaned it tomorrow. Getting some new boots delivered PS3's and it's having the clutch and flywheel ( and possibly wheel bearing) next Thursday.

Tidy, what engine cover are you going for?
I have the rns 510 and fitted a glovebox iPod kit and its spot on.
I'll be getting a new mod of some sort this weekend, not sure what yet but I'll post back...
