Having driven both now for a good amount of time, the beemer seems more hooked up and agile. However i prefer the merc sizing and styling, whats the general opinions i honestley dont know. Ive rule the jag sportbrake out i think after driving these 2! The mercs styling on ths new eclass is brilliant but the refinement and power from the bmw is immense. Any help on this one, who has an e350 merc to comment maybe?
-
I love big Merc estates, and I love the look of the new E-Class. The BMW is certainly going to be the better drivers car, and although I haven't driven the latest version our 09 320d M Sport is great. But it's not very big, so it kind of fails as the load lugger family car.
I'd choose the Merc.
-
Thats the predicament im in pal both are great for different reasons, do you opt for refinement or styling!? The power from the 330 is just phenomenal and thats no joke.
-
Or, the 535 msport?
-
Someone must have some input?
-
I love the Merc, in fact we're looking at replacing the 320d with one.
I also love the 5-Series but I have some romantic notion that I'll buy a big Merc estate and run it for 50-years and it will be one of the family.
-
I would associate the Mercedes brand with an older driving demographic, the BMW seems appeal to the younger audience.
-
I know what you mean andrew and its just that bit harder opting for the merc, as its a brand new model with none on the road to look at i just have pictures to decide! The pictures do look good though to be fair! :happy2:
-
I would go 330D (But I am biased, have a 59 plate 330d Touring), the New 3 Series 330D is very quick (5.6 to 60mph!), refined, good on economy and cheap to tax/insure. I drove a brand new 330D a few weeks back as my father is getting one.
Good luck deciding which one...
P.S. Mercs are associated with the 50's/60's set tho :happy2:

P.S. Mercs are associated with the 50's/60's set tho :happy2:
I think that is changing rapidly though. Look at the amount of younger (30's) people driving C-Class's theses days, and I imagine the A-Class will appeal to a younger audience too.
-
I would agree with that to some extent Andrew, but historically peoples perceptions of mercs are old mans cars for wafting along :signLOL:
-
I had a merc c class at 25 yrs old and enjoyed it to be fair. As andrew says, they have come on so far and performance figures, tax etc is just as good as the bmw in all fairness. The interior on the bmw looks nicer but the exterior on the new merc looks simply stunning especially with the pano roof. If youve not driven the merc then thats why your biased, the driving of the bmw is phenomenal but so is the merc and thats my issue. I much prefer the merc styling but prefer bmw cabin. The new merc isnt on roads untill end of next month so doubt ill get to see one in the flesh before i order!
-
Sounds like you need to get to a certain motorshow that is happening at the moment... :signLOL:
-
Tell me about it! Next flight to geneva please!
-
Or just wait until your dealer has one, test drive it then place your order based on yor experience?
-
I dont need to drive one, ive driven one thats only 2 months old on the same engine etc. I was thouroughly impressed and if anything being brand new will be even better. Its just it would be nice to see the shape and lines close up etc...
-
Cheap flight to Geneva it is then!
-
I don't think it's a fair comparison, a 3 series v's a E class, the Merc is the next size up (and my wife says size matters)
A 3 series v c class or 5 series v E class would be a better comparison.
You really need to think about your lifestyle & how your going to use the car? If you want practicality, loads of space and comfort then the Merc is the way to go. But you ain't going to chuck it around like the BMW.
Both engines are really sweet so that doesn't really come into it.
If I was spending your money or mine I'd have the Merc. I don't give 3 series estate's a second glance, But a Merc E class estate in something like white really catches my eye. Each to their own I guess
-
The car will be used for towing my track car, lugging family around and the dog. If i opt for the 535d it will have adaptive suspension which makes a hell of a difference apparently to the handling. Im coming from a range rover sport so throwing it around wont be an issue really but either way they arent to bad. I just wish i knew what the rocco weighed for towing purposes as its fully stripped im thinking around 1050kg.
-
Take it to your local recycling place and ask them to weigh it :happy2:
-
I wish it was as easy as that its trailer only pal.
-
Well I've pretty much decided, think I'm going with the 535 d msport. Just need to try and decide on a colour now! Main choices which all look good and show it off are alpine white, carbon black and space grey. It's. Lovely car, both inside and out and the engine is immense. Plus good mpg from a large sized car with a big engine. I'm going to go with the adaptive drive aswell I think after reading all the reviews out there. Should have delivery in may so will get some pics up when it comes.
-
Good work, superb choice, though to be honest I'm sure any of those would have been a good choice.
-
Cheers mate I love the car and know it is a good choice but do you know when you grow to love your existing car and know its coming to an end for another motor! It can be very hard deciding if you're doing the right thing as the range rover has been faultless and in my eyes a stunning motor.
-
Cracking choice as the complete package for me in terms of an allrounder, grey gets my vote as a raft of these around by me and white just doesn't look right
-
I looked at this one and thought it looked good in white to be fair, with full m kit and black exterior trim and privacy.

-
I had a 530d 8speed auto Msport as a loaner, as a 'do everything' car, it pretty much excelled everywhere... It was just frigging big!!
Suits dark colours IMO.
-
I actually really like it in Imperial Blue Xirallic with cinnamon brown leather....
-
^ this. It should look like a smoking lounge in a stately home. Dark grey with oxblood leather, etc etc. old skool Jag chic.
-
Cinnamon brown had crossed my mind but after looking at lots of pics it looks more pinky/ orangey which is not the look i want! I want proper brown.
-
Well I picked it up last night and to say im more than impressed with it is an understatement! I have never seen so may features, this will take some getting use to!

Ha. True.
Oh, I remembered one thing I though bad, e-PAS was a bit wooly. Not really that life changing though.
-
Tony that's why I didn't choose the epas pal. :happy2:
-
Great car and stunning colour :happy2:
-
What a handsome car :happy2:
Bet it's got loads of road presence. Very appealing motor.
This Jekyll and hide act of a decent steady-on-fuel cruiser one minute, next a torque charged big straight 6 turboe'd beast is becoming the all round thing to go for :congrats:
-
Very very nice,I just placed a deposit on a 2011 e90 335d msport at the main dealer, not test drove it yet as I didn't have my drivers licence on me..bit spur of the moment really as when I was looking at it someone else looked at it & was going to buy it so I quickly threw a deposit down..are they as quick as a ed30 stg1?
-
Looks absolutely stunning. :happy2:
-
Cheers for the comments guys! I am more than happy with it! Dan you will love it i drove the 330 and it was mega aswell just not big enough for my needs thats why i went with this. But the performance is superb it is as has been said a real sleeper, and a comfy one if you just want to cruise in comfort aswell. :happy2:
-
It's like a spaceship inside. your steering wheel has more buttons than my car in total. Looks the biz!, congratulations :drinking:
-
Have you got the electric tow bar? I have it and its a great feature (wow I'm getting old) :signLOL: car looks fantastic
-
Very nice, looked at these before getting my M135i.
-
Cheers guys, yes tc theres is just a couple of features to get use to! Lets put it this way found out tonight you can ring the hotline from bmw via the pre instaled sim and ask for the nearest poi including reviewed restaurants and they send the info through and set the nav for you! I could just go on forever! And yes i have the electric towbar its awesome i need it for towing the rocco. If you think of something it will most probably do it, one very happy chappy here anyway! :happy2:
-
Very nice Shaun, Are the brakes finished in a Matt grey paint? if they are you may want to paint them, mine looked crap almost straight away, I got them painted Black :)
