hi all, i had a spare wheel which was badly corroded due to being dropped which chipped the lacquer and caused this;

so then i masked the wheel, and carefully applied paint stripper

after cleaning and neutralising the wheel i then sanded it, starting with 800 wet and dry working up to 1500. after the 1500 i used autosol metal polish and this was the result,

hope this helps anyone planning on a wheel refurb. i have lacquered the wheel now and it looks excellent, i amazed myself with the results :driver:

Looks very good , does it match the others ?, or did you do the same to all 4
-
^^^ Wow Brett that's great work :jumping:
-
WoW your going to be popular on here.
I can see red robins little nose twitching already. :drinking: thats going to be a good fix me thinks to a big problem.
-
cheers guys, it took around 6 hours so its time consuming. ive just had 3 new wheels fitted under warranty so ill post some pics with this 1 next to them for a comparison. any queries just ask

Nice work there fella! Makes sense as from what I've seen the whiteworm issue is with the laquer, so removing it and re-applying should do the trick! :happy2:
-
Thats a great job there. Dont think I would have the balls to give that a go but im sure this thread will be very useful to other forum users :happy2:

it has slightly but all sanding was done following the lines on the wheel so it didnt effect it that much

yeah diamond cut is wot i meant, CD DISC also works to get across, i love the side view of these wheels with the sun/night lights catches the blue (if thats right) CD DISC effect shine, cool

Wow!! I'm impressed! My Monza's are now as bad as yours, but 6hrs x 4 of the sort of manual labour I'm cr@p at isn't realistic for me. Great for someone else though - A very useful post :happy2:

Just came across this thread and im very interested, so im going to give it a shot - not tried nothing gained :happy2:

Good work, it's amazing what a bit of wet and dry can do and bucket loads of patience :congrats:

What sort of paint stripper was used here ? Any1 any ideas

probably nitromors, thats the common one people use
-
The new Nitromorse isn't as strong as the old stuff, as it no longer uses dichloromethane.
I used some Starchem Synstryp to remove lacquer from a set of diamond cut Tiguan wheels recently.

WOW! New member, and i've been researching as my alloy wheels are in a similar condition. One question though, what method did you use to 'neutralise' the wheel after using paint stripper? Thanks
-
Amazing well done chap :happy2:
