Was just in the process of changing my rear brake pads and I bought a laser rewind tool from halfords. Did the drivers side rear fine, rewind the caliper in fairly easy.
I went to do passenger side rear and I can not for the life of me rewind it! The pads were literally worn to the metal and the caliper is wound right out but surely this shouldn't matter? Any fixes that anyone knows? Or am I in the market for a new caliper now? I was wondering if I needed to have a tool that would in the opposite way because my tool is only right handed thread but one side worked fine?

P.S. We used a lot of force, it aint moving, just wondering if anything there is to do?

Have you removed the expansion tank cap?
You might need to get some PlusGas mate, soak it for 20mins and try again, with your tyre iron as an extender on the rewind tool (go easy with it); they'll come free.
If they are really stuck, then they are probably ceased a good'un... I've just replaced all four calipers today, as both nearsides we're binding badly (they had done 112k so can't complain too much).

Will get a new caliper tomorrow, any idea on price? Also are they pretty easy to change? Never done it before.

Brand new? Pretty damn expensive (hundreds per caliper), I grabbed some MK6 rears with very low miles on the bay, they are slightly different, as the Mk6 does away with the hard pipe to the caliper and is soft from the main line to the caliper.
If you've never done them before, it's probably easiest to grab a Mk5 rear for direct replacement (although it's not much longer to swap out that section). Should be able to pick up a lowish mile mk5 caliper for about £40 or so. You don't need to change the carrier for the mk6 caliper or mk5 caliper to fit, but you can if you want to, I didn't bother - as I was in and out of the hail today.
It's worth noting a decent indy shouldn't charge a lot, perhaps £40-£60 per caliper.
If you do decide to do it, make sure you have some Plusgas or similar :happy2:
I grabbed a quote from VW for complete replacement of all calipers including labour... lol, are you sat down?: £1600!! Did it myself (albeit with low mileage 2nd hand parts) for £200. Well worth a waste of a Sunday.

try loosening the bleed nipple a little and take the hydraulic resistance out of the equation as said above the reservoir cap can cause a restriction but if the load compensator valve is stuck then the fluid can't be pushed out of the caliper

As the above post said but then if that fails it may be once you've got it off the car and your more comfortable with the tool the piston will screw back - using a evenly applied pressure!

Yeah maybe, getting a new caliper today but will try and screw in the old one once its off.

try loosening the bleed nipple a little and take the hydraulic resistance out of the equation as said above the reservoir cap can cause a restriction but if the load compensator valve is stuck then the fluid can't be pushed out of the caliper

This. The same thing happened to me Wallpaper, relieve the pressure before you fork out for a new caliper.

Was that a caliper copy from ECP? Just wondering whether it came with carriers and lines?
Most seem to be unpainted, but the Pagid, of which two rear types are available, are painted red, one which is like the Mk5 and one like the Mk6... for anyone thinking of these, it's worth echoing that the Mk6 type will require new lines to be fitted to a Mk5 car if they are anything like the standard Bosch ones. (the standard "soft" line has a slightly different size connector on one end).

It was just a caliper, no lines or carriers, the 2 that are on the website one has a 38mm piston, one has a 41mm, i went for the 41mm on my jetta! It came painted silver.

The 41 mm piston does exist then! I thought this was only on the VW Caddy.. hence the Caddy mod for the rears.
Did it specify a brand mate? Very interesting. :happy2:

Look exactly the same as the Mk6 callys, albeit unpainted - don't suppose you measured the piston?

Had one picked up today, got £35 knocked off if I take back the old one which was unexpected. Cant wait to get it on, got someone coming to look at it on Wed so need it perfect! :D

I take it that its pretty easy to change? Never done one before, I work in IT haha so not used to this kind of thing, well did years and years ago on mk2 and corrado but completely forgot! But willing to learn! :scared:

Was reasonably easy, i did get brake fluid everywhere mind you!

Top up the brake fluid if low, only use VW 501.14
Then make sure to keep the reservoir cap ON
Handbrake released
Chock car properly and use axle stand
Wear safety specs and gloves to be safe
Have your new caliper and line ready, as soon as you remove the old replace with the new and tighten to minimize spillage
I used an upturned bucket to keep the new caliper on whilst removing the old one
Make sure everything is tightened properly, wipe around and check for leaks.
Pump the brakes a few times before you drive it.
You may get away with not having to bleed but you may have...
