Title: BIG TURBOS and things...
Post by: chudds on March 23, 2013, 11:15:08 am
just had a quick search on here and the only big turbo thread i found was in 2009 so not really relevant now i dont think :/

has many done it? or with the popularity of the ko4 upgrade is it even worth it with pretty much a bolt on kit...

now i understand its much easier to buy a apr bolt on kit but theres a lot of stuff missing for me... such as the option for an external wastage and also the noise..

i have not seen much of the ko4's but they all seem very low key noise wise obviously not performance wise...

i have come for a 1.8 t back ground so big turbos are the kind of norm on there and with the gt turbos the noise is immense

such as this pretty little thing... http://vimeo.com/17730790 - not sure how to embed on here... but i want this... can we make a ko4 sound like this...?

Hi ,what turbo do you have currently?

Most people avoid it as when you go bigger than a K04 you loose drivability for the pursuit of pub bragging figures.

K04 with water meth, full stage 2+ hardware and a decent custom map will see you 400bhp and 450lb/ft which is more than enough to spin the front wheels in the dry in 4th.

For A FWD car.

For a 4WD car I'd still only go for a hybrid K04/Loba L04XX/GTX2867RS as you still lose driveability as a Daily driver car.

If it is track specific, then the sky's the limit.

I'd also be looking at the CDL block for any of the above as the GTI blocks with big power would not be as strong or as reliable. :happy2:

GTX3071 with the smaller exhaust housing work really well with the TFSi.  Big numbers and nice power delivery.  You adapt to the way the power is delivered.

Strenghtened internals in a GTi block will be fine for up to 550bhp.

LO4XX - well you know what I and other tuners think of that one!  :P

You dont need 4WD to go fast.  Its fairly easy to manage high power in a FWD car with a good setup and linear throttle.

just sounds like any other turbo with a gay baileys dump valve or something.. a k04 sounds much nicer with a forge re-circ and cai

I guess we will have to disagree on that one then Alex. I'd rather have the lower spool and instant hit of the smaller turbos for the road and not have to adapt my driving style to suit the turbo.

However for a purely track car I'd probably plump for something the size of a GTX30 something.

The reason I prefer the CDL is that you don't have to do internals and can still go to mid to high 400's with the faster spooling turbo's and be reliable. You simply cannot with a standard GTI engine.

I know what you think about the Loba L004XX turbo Alex, but then I guess you'll never be a convert. It does work well, make power, spool quickly and I've driven one on more than a few occasions to know.  :booty:

Thats the norm in the 1.8T world purely because thats the only way to reliably make 300-350hp.  With the K04 TFSI 350hp is simple with minimal bolt ons and it has a wider power band as well.

If your after threads or info, SteveP, DanGB and Keith@APR have/had Stage 3+ GT28 BT kits on their cars, Gillm has a GT28 Stage 3 from Ray West tuning iirc.  Danishmkvgti has the LO4xx with a REVO stage 3 iirc.  iirc the APRUK VW Scirocco will also be going stage 3 very soon, and our very own vRSAlex is going for a GT50 on his

I've driven the APR Golf R on numerous occasions with the Stage 3 setup and thats insanely fast.  I personally struggle to see why you could possibly need or want more power or performance than that has.

well when you all put it that way it makes much more sense i didnt think 400 was possible on a k04 :0

i have just put a p-flow induction kit on mine and quite the noise but wanting more power with it...

my landlord has just bought a mk2 with a 20v in it and hes going k03s so i cant get left behind now can i ;) best get saving haha

Another option would the the previously known L=380, that has a version 3 turbine now and has several runs with GIAC sw showing above 400bhp.
K04 just got better
