Right, as you can see from the pics the end of the alternator seems to have broken off. Have no idea how........Please see the pics.
1. Am I right saying this is f**ked completely and I now need an altenator?
2. Is there short term solution - as I can get enough power to get the car to a garage - want to try avoiding a £80 collection fee.
3. Is this JUST for power - or does the belt do power steering, water pump, air con etc etc.?
3. Anyone got an altenator for sale?

The pulley is removable, it looks like it has split in two?
If so, just a new pulley and would do the belt too.
You'll likely need a combined torx/socket alternator tool to get off the left behind bits.
-
So this is removeable for the Alternator? just uploading another image. Do not look good :(
-
Yeh looks like the pulley has sheared off.
Treat it like a normal swap with a new pulley, a tool like ebay 160815688677 will help.
And grab a new belt you don't know what affect this had and only about £15
-
OK, so there is a bolt down the centre of the spindle ? (Pic 3) that I can just slide the pole out? or is that tool for actually removing the part that has come off?
Is this common? or could something serious have caused this?
Also CAN I run run/tie something to the lower wheel (pic 3) to the spindle on the alternator as a temp measure?
-
Yes you can still run the car for short periods, everything will still work ok but obviously you'll have the battery light on
Just remove what's left of the drive belt first and make sure the battery's fully charged etc (as you'll drain it pretty fast)
There is a special tool to remove whats left of the pulley & refit the new one, the alternater will need to come off to do it
No biggie buddy
-
Can be removed in situ no problem. Alternator wont need to be removed.
-
as above...
done a few in place.
:happy2:

Looks like my mk4 when mine failed, no biggy. Think it cost me £150 including being towed to the garage.
:happy2:
-
:ashamed: Was think £400+ for new alt
Could a strong strap been placed between lower wheel and the alten - to get me to a garage? mines a 40 min drive and the battery (although only a few months old) will not hold a long enough charge...?
-
Where abouts are you? I can sort you a pulley as alternators are what i do for a living .
You have a free wheeling pulley i could even get the tools to you but it would be easier to take the alternator off to fit the new pulley
-
Johnny, i've got a brand new genuine VW alternator pulley sitting on my shelf, part number 022 903 119 C, if its any good to you, let me know and we'll sort something out. any decent garage near you should be able to swap it over
