I am new to the forum and am hoping my fellow GTi owners can shed some light and advice. I have a 2007 GTi Edition 30 and all of a sudden late last summer my climate control stopped producing cold air. I handed it to a local dealer who immediately advised that the gas had dropped below the minimum level and that the condenser was leaking. I was then told this could have led to damaging/burning out the compressor as both are working at all times when the climate control is switched on.
I have since had the condenser replaced (which is the harder part to replace) and the cool air blew a few minutes then went back to lukewarm and has been so ever since. It strikes me as crazy that compressor is also damaged as there is surely something that switches it off when there is a fault elsewhere to stop it from being damaged? There is definitely power getting to the compressor. I have read there is a pressure switch that could also leak? The condensor was replaced a few weeks back so my next step is to check that I have not lost any gas since the condensor was replaced. I don't want to fork out for a new compressor until I am sure it is needed.
Does anyone have any additional ideas or tips/tests to help me find the root of my problem? Fair enough, I might need a new compressor but want to be sure I do first, especially since it seems far fetched that both the condenser and compressor need replaced.

The pressure sensor is often a problem area, on my std GTI its at the bottom left hand side of the rad as you look down from above. It's on one of the metal air con pipes. It needs specialist equipment to test it though, could just be worth replacing if you've got gas in the system and nothing working. Bear in mind though that the aircon probably won't be working anyway at the moment, it's way too cold and the low temp sensor will stop the compressor from coming on

I had the high pressure switch replaced by VW and my air con is now fine. Was about £100, half for the switch and half for labour.
If it was me I would take the car in to VW and ask them. There are some air con specialists around too.
