Yellow engine sign came on out of the blue this morning. Car is running fine, no lumpty ness, pulls well etc. Having had coil problems on my mk4 when I saw this sign I know its not coil packs (plus they have been changed by VW as a recall), however, having had a TT this sign came on when a problem with exhaust sensor of some sorts so I just wondering if this could be a same issue on Golfs Gti's or if I can check anything else i.e. MAF, lamba sensor etc as i don't have VAG com thing to tell me but don't really want a bill from VW for checking out and giving fault code.

Did it flash a few times and then go out?
It could have been a misfire.
-
Na. Just came on when I started the car back up after a five min school run this morning @ 9ish and stayed on ever since :(

Look in the vagcom section for a friendly local cable owner.

I've had this a couple of times. It is indeed to do with exhaust/emissions, that's what it says in the handbook anyway. First time it didn't go away and the dealer checked and reset it and said there were no problems. Second time it went away by itself after a couple of days. I think it can be down to filling up with a dodgy batch of fuel.

The light will disappear after a certain number of ignition cycles for certain faults.
Trying to guess what it is is pointless as it can come on for a multitude of faults. Get it scanned.

Mine just turned on after a long drive, luckily my friend was on the way home, he took a peek and there was pretty much nothing of importance on the scanner. I expected as much as the car drove fine like yours. After he cleared all my codes, the light disappeared and hasn't come back.
