Guys,
Got a few scratches on the boot-lip (the bit just above the rear number plate) from the previous owner dragging whatnot over it. These will be dealt with professionally soon.

I'm looking for some transparent sticky back plastic to fit so I can avoid this in the future.
Is there such thing I can buy? I want something very similar to the stationary stuff, almost like a thin laminate that I can stick over the top so it's transparent above the paintwork?
Appreciate any ideas.
Thanks,
Pete.

Of course you can have a piece of stone chip film cut and fitted by any firm that does paint protection films.
However I have a distant memory thar VW actually sell exactly what you've described; precut bumper protection film. It was so long ago I can't remember where I saw it, but I'm sure it was somewhere like a VW accessories catalogue. Perhaps someone with a better memory will be along to confirm or give VW a shout.
Let me know how you get on as I might like one too!

tmt sell a selection of solutions :happy2:

I have a tailor made boot liner by these people, hatchbag.co.uk, which includes a fold out bumper protecting flap, I've had them on my last 4 cars and they are tops :happy2:

Dan,
That's a stunning find mate! :happy2: Thanks.
Is the one top of the list the one I'll require for a Mk5 Gti?
Cheers,
Pete.

Yeah I think it's the top one with the 1K0 part number (think 1K0 means MK5 Golf in part number terms). Can't be sure from the picture but think thats a MK5 rear end  But I'm the parts manny will keep you right! :happy2:

Thats great for the dog Gary :congrats: Pete i too have a few scratches in the same place as you, and i was wondering what would be the best protection too. Even though my dog dosen't go in the boot, the previous owner told me that the few scratches on the rear were caused by his dog.
My dog "Bob" is only little, and is whats known as a "Fourche Terrier". He travels in on of these on the back seat in one of these folding dog crates, and he loves it! We have a Red crate BTW, and they are quite good looking.

That plastic film works well, although it does ware and needs replaced reasonably often or it starts to look tatty.
Just buy a sheet from ebay and apply it yourself !
see that doggy boot protector mate, Does that remain attached to the seat, with out movement even when the seats are folded down and how does it attach to the seats ect . Cheers

Indeed fella. I use the boot regularly so wanted something to ensure the paintwork is all dandy for the future. I had paid to have the scratches polished out but it was a fairly poor job.

^ How often do you envisage as reasonable often dude? Surely they should last a good three to four years?

...Well I finally fitted this today but made a hash of it  :stupid:
It's just mildly uneven and bubbled on the bend down towards the number plate area as opposed to the flat section.
Could I remove it with a hairdryer in the same way I'd remove a decal?
-
bubbles can be removed with a pin and a credit card
-
I'll have a go VC but I didn't do a great job. I also didn't apply the gell that it comes with, couldn't see the need and didn't have a suitable applicator.
Will it come off nicely once warm?
-
is the gel not just a lubricant to assist sliding it into place?
when applying vinyl i use special squeegies that have felt along on edge and rubber on the other for smoothing down without scratching
is it vinyl? as it often stretches when you remove it so you can lose the shape, and adhesive can be left behind.
when i do big areas i use soapy water or glass cleaner to 'float them into place and then squeegie the fluid out and the heat them to bond them down...can make the difference between being permanent and lasting only a few days
saying that, you can buy liquid adhesive in a pump spray
short answer, yeah a little warmth such as a hairdrier, and use a very thin blade carefully to catch the edge to lift it..not your fingernails :happy2:
