Well getting near to being 50 and i am the most unluckiest person with these . I must have had around ten problems over the years with them breaking or causing major issues.
Got to change the wifes rear pads and discs on her Mini cooper and hey presto another locking nut problem , being good Friday few garages open so can't get the B*oody thing off and more hassle. ? The one thats has broken i undone 3 weeks ago to take the wheel off to check the condition of the pads and discs ! So its not as if it was on tight from a Air Tool
Is this a regular problem ? What are other peoples experiences ?

Not been a problem here.
What make of lockers are you using?

Not had a problem with vw locking wheel nuts, but 7/8 years ago on my mondeo st200 the locking wheel nut key broke and I still waiting for the dealer to ring me to say the replacement has arrived.....
They just require handling with care and plenty of copper slip something garages don't seem to bother with.

BMW Mini one came with the car , Nov 2008 . They can only have been undone on the rears no more than 3 or 4 times . The tyres i put on the rears replaced the originals , rear brake pads and discs are originals too ! They really shouldn't be that sh!t , should they ? Then again they don't even give you a spare wheel nowadays with a Mini , I had issue with the VW ones too. I think they are not meant to be undone with anything other than an air tool . The sockets never fit snugly over the nut and then you apply pressure to the wheel brace to the side rather than directly behing the nut like an air tools does

I broke one just before a show which was annoying, managed to get it off in the end.I bought a breaker bar so I could get them off with ease and not had any problems since.
