Title: Hi, I'm new, but don't have a licence yet
Post by: kimmy96 on March 29, 2013, 09:54:01 pm
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie :signLOL: haven't past my test yet, but been promised a GTI by my rents if I pass first time.  I know this sounds spoilt, but they can afford it (trust me)

Question is which GTI would you go for?

A Golf GTI would be a good start.

Not a fan of Peugeots, Ford Escorts etc really.

Oh, can they lend me some cash?

Even if money was no object, looking back at all the stupid things I did in cars when I'd just passed my test (enjoying the handbrake a little too much etc ) I'm glad it was an old fiesta  I'd have ruined a GTI, chewed up the clutch, kerbed the wheels, thrashed it from cold and generally (sometimes unkowlingly) ruined it  :sad1:

My advise is buy something cheap that you don't care about for 6 months, until you get better at clutch control & knowing the width of your car, what to do when you push too hard round a roundabout, how to park in a space. . .

Then when you've got some experience, get the best one you can afford  :happy2:

Trust me, passing your test doesn't mean your a great driver (even thought we all think we are within 5 mins of passing). Experience is what you need. There's only so much you learn in a test, the rest you find out for yourself. In doing so, you wont be very kind to a car

I think my Dad wanted me to be a boy, because he's been massively into cars since I can remember.

Need to concentrate, because the test seems really difficult, so many observations.  Dad says you don't use most of it when you've passed. :surprised:

I've driven a Bentley around a friends estate, but that was one you don't change gear in, just a big brake and accelerator.  Not sure what engine it was, but it was very, very fast. :scared:  Are the GTI's scarey?  As I would probably get something else if they were.  Thanks for your help.

If your not careful with how you drive, particularly in the wet it can be a little scary as even in standard spec 200bhp can be more that enough to get you into trouble.  :scared:

What age are you? I ask because if I'd had a 200bhp turbo GTI at 17 (when I passed my test) I would have killed myself.

I was immature and drove far too quickly with my mates. I crashed my dad's 1.0 litre Polo into a lamp post 5 days after my test on a wet corner. If the lamppost hadn't been there I would have continued sideways and rolled over and over into a steep ravine. I would certainly have been killed. Luckily I was alone in the car, so if I had gone into the ravine at least I wouldn't have ended my friends lives too.

Maybe you're quite sensible and mature and could be ok...I'm not preaching, but seriously be very careful. With power comes responsibility!

I'm 17 at the moment, but should be 18 when I pass.  Dad reckons the GTI is a good first car because it's safe.
Personally I just want to pass my test then worry about it, but a cool car would be nice :)  I like the Citroen ones on the adverts.

I'm with the other guys on this one. My first car was a 1.1 fiesta and ice worked up in power ever since. A golf is a good car because its safe, but for a young lad perhaps a lower engine would be more sensible. I have heard too many stories of new drivers in high power cars not being able to control the power, being over confident which you are when you first pass, and having bad crashes.

Id say get a 1.0 for a few months to get a feel of drivjng a car in the real world then get the gti when your ready. Unless you can honestly say your not gonna floor it at every second then get a slpwer car first. I had a 106 1.1 best car i ever owned because it was my first so no power steering no abs and central locking. It had fcuk all lol BUT because it had no driver aids i belive it made me a better driver. Better feel for the car. Whatever car you get just be carefull and be safe. Often seen people driving dangerous and its scary to see sometimes. Your not paul walker lol. If you end up getting a gti I'm sure you'll like it.

Aww thanks guys, my first test is on April 3rd, but I've not told anyone :ashamed: as I'm not confident I will pass. Will see after that :)

Good luck on your test  :happy2: I had a polo 1.2 for the first 3 years then moved onto a golf gti when i was 21, best thing I ever done, I really would consider getting something with a smaller engine/ cheaper runnning as if you do bump it, your premiums will be  :fighting: :fighting:

Welcome on board young man!  :drinking:

Good luck with the test. Piece of p*ss in my day, no one ever failed so no pressure. We don't except losers here!

Learning to drive will really only begin AFTER you pass your test. You'll get whatever you want but I'd recommend a slightly smaller car such as a Polo, Ibiza, Clio or something similar with a 1.2 - 1.4 engine to start with. Enjoy.

PJ. Way to go with the lamppost fella!!  :signLOL:

I destroyed it...was bent double with the lamp on the ground! Luckily our neighbour was high up in the council and he got it replaced without me having to pay.

It certainly made me slow down. A lot of young lads don't get a second chance unfortunately.

Im almost certain that if i had been given a GTI when i passed my test... i would either be in a coffin or in jail.

Now you have past your test you are just starting to learn to drive and getting a golf gti will be to fast for an inexperienced driver. You will be best of getting some thing with a smaller engine like the polo

Thanks for everyone's (?) advice

Ignore koppar the guys a bellend - edit i see he's now been canned.

I wouldnt go with a GTI from the off, just get a smaller engined golf, 1.6 or something. Still just as safe in an accident and less chance of you putting it through a wall.

Welcome to the Forum Kimmy  :pomppomp:

I think I too would suggest something a bit smaller.

Lots of great looking Lupo's out there... Or if the money is available I'd suggest a VW Up

I totally agree with the others, and in terms of your choice of car - excellent.

As others have said go for cheap and reasonable power to start with. I would have been absolutely lethal in a Pirelli as a first car!
I think you don't really appreciate how dangerous a car is until you are no longer in control of it. At least you won't be going that fast if/when it happens.

Good luck with the driving career.

Number 1 test for your test, just take your time, try and relax, and stick to speed limits religiously. Don't let drivers around you try and push you to hurry up.

As for the young age and GTI thing, I myself found that the faster my cars got, the safer a driver I became.

Trying to overtake slow cars in my 1.4 Ibiza had to be a long thought out task of as I needed a run up at them.

Granted maybe it would be best to have a crappier car for the first 3 months or so as you will make mistakes, and last thing you want is to do damage to your new GTI. You will learn so much in those first 3 months.

Anyway best

Sounds like your rents are quite rich if they have friends with bentleys and estates to drive on... In which case your not going to worry about a few scrapes here and there... Grab a DSG one, might be easier to start with.

Cars have moved on alot in the 20 years I've been driving with airbags, abs, traction control but basically teenagers have'nt moved on in those 20 years (and neither should they) so I agree with the wise words of others, start with a smaller engined car build up some experience you will make mistakes god knows I did!!!! I lost a couple of friends in car and motorbike accidents when I was in my teens, the accidents were nothing to do with me (don't know if I could have lived with myself) and get yourself a gti in a couple of years time.

When you first start driving its great fun and brings you freedom and opportunities, don't spoil it by increasing your chances of hurting yourself or someone else in a car to powerful for you. Good luck with your test, I wish you well.

Na disagree, wouldn't go DSG until using a manual is second nature. Then have as many auto's as you want. That VW Up looks sweet although im pretty sure ive never even seen one :surprised:

Agreed.
Nothing wrong with getting a lower powered Golf and making it look nice- something like a GT (either the TDI or TSI) looks almost as nice as a GTI (and with some mods could look better), is still plenty quick enough for the majority of people (never mind a newly qualified driver!),is a bit more economical and most importantly reduces the chances of hurting yourself or someone else through driving too fast.

When my daughter is old enough to drive I'll want her to have the best car that I can afford to buy her- but that doesn't mean the fastest.  I'd want her in something that looks cool, handles well, is safe, and is quick enough to get her out of trouble but not quick enough to get her into it.... if you see what I mean.

If your dad is sensible he'll think like that too.

Will it be new or 2nd hand? If new you may as well order a Mk7 GTI , I dont even know if you can get a new Mk6 any more. I wish Id have had a GTI as my first car but then it would have been a lovely Mk2 GTI that I stuffed into the back of a Opel Manta , writing it off , in the summer of 1987!

The UP is a cool car. The GT UP will be released very soon so could be an option?

I always think of 7UP for some reason.

It is quite funny, in the states kids drive around in 5.0 V8 AUTO's from the get go; the Rabbit is a sensible first car.  I guess they generally have wider / better roads than pothole britain though.

Well if your studying to be a Doctor you'll understand one needs to crawl before he can walk and when he masters walking he'll run in his own time!

Now surely you understand that to be a doctor you're not just going to become a surgeon?

So read what other fellow members have written and give yourself a chance and progress progressively and enjoy all the stages, in all seasons - making full use of the parents fuel card and not their insurance!

when i passed i had a 1999 civic coupe 1.6 and that felt scary :P
my friend when he passed got an audi s5 and crashed it 3 months later. Another friend got a golf mk3 gti 16v and crashed that, i can go on.... If your not experienced with high performance cars they can take your life. Best advice i would give is if you are sensible enough and can control not to show off then you will be fine. I would be to get something smaller then jump to a gti

Im with the rest, get a golf just not a gti quite yet, i bashed my first car up pretty bad and if had had a gti as my first car i can garruntee those crashes would of panned out a lot different. Start off in a 1.4 or something, i had a 1.2 clio as my first car and that felt plenty fast enough (although i would of liked faster) and i scared myself alot.

An Eddie as a 1st car! The insurance will be crazy but I guess your folks can afford it.

As others have said you need to be sensible as a new driver with 230BHP at your disposable...the peer pressure when you have mates in the car will be pretty hard to resist.

I have been watching Barely Legal Drivers on the BBC recently and they do some stupid sh*t, especially when friends are in the car.

But all said an done you will really enjoy the GTI (Ed30) as its a brilliant car :happy2:
