Title: Slim-line SubW Box
Post by: rdfcpete on July 26, 2009, 03:37:07 pm
To save a bit of boot space I decided before I fit my ICE system into the Golf, I'd like to see how I could save boot space, even if it's marginal.

I'm not going to save weight, so space is the obvious target.
The sub-box already has the amp mounted onto the back of it, therefore that's a start.

On top of this, I was wondering where slim line SubW boxes are purchasable on their own? - I can only find them in 10" with sub's as part of the package, thus they're a £tonne plus.

Should I just butcher the 12" one I've already got?
One obvious option is to build my own but I want a quick and easy fix really, I don't have the resources as such. Carpetting' and what have you would be awkward.

I'm confident the sub will fit with about a third of the depth off, making it 'slimmer'.
The most important question really is I expect this to affect the sound, but how much will it affect the sound by bass wise? Unless it's a massive decrease in quality I wouldn't be fussed.

Thanks,
Pete.

You should take a look at Hurdys write up on how to make a box for the arch using fiberglass  :happy2:

I suppose a slim-line sub and a fibreglass box would save space + weight.

Isn't the sound quality with slim line subs meant to be crap though?

Cheers VC.

Had a quick scan (I'm at work, so on a small res window  ) and could find the pages relating to the carpet install in the left hand side of the boot.

BTW, what sub is that? I'll need a compact or slim-line sub very similar to that. Seems they are only available in 10"?

nope, multi sizes dude, mines a JLAudio 13.5" sub and measures maybe 3/4" from face to rear

wafer thin and uber loud...but silly expensive tbh

but, boot spaces is almost the same as standard and i can get 2 huge suitcases in and still have my tunes on

Sounds good fella.

That's reassuring then and yeah you've kept your boot space well. Looks a really impressive install.
I must be typing in the wrong keywords as google doesn't find much for 'slimline sub'. Are they classed as 'compact' or something else similar?

just hard to find really, not many companies produce thin subs at any great size, JL though is a market leader, certainly no complaints from me  :innocent:

I was going to suggest the JL TW5, it's the best performing slim sub.  You can get old school phase linear alliante subs which have great sound quality but won't go that loud.  The JL is a good choice
