Title: iPod instead of cd changer

So I bought a kit to replace the armrest cd changer to an iPod setup, but whilst reading around on how to get the sat nav unit out, I have read elsewhere about directly replacing the cd unit with the iPod dock and it being plug and play - is that right, or do I need to swap the loom out to the one in the kit I purchased?
