Title: Fuming!!!
Post by: GTI Leeds on April 02, 2013, 09:04:29 pm
Well after reading the post on here over the weekend regarding the cars that had been broken into at Leeds/Bradford airport and had the RNS units stolen, imaging been told at work by the unit next to us that your car alarm is going off so you go out and find this!!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fac60%2FJonoAsquith%2F20130402_145638_zpsb1bf1a32.jpg&hash=813ed1b908c8ca45c9c39dbc0981c9e0e43ab34b)

P!SSED OFF isn't the word! Only had the GTD 4 weeks and now its happened to me, in broad daylight. The T***S were in and out in 2 minutes!

To make matters worse they have just ripped it out and it also needs a loom  :fighting:

Feck sake! It's getting beyond a joke now, I think I'm going to take my RCD510 out because its not worth the aggro, plus the thick thieving tw@s won't realise it's not sat nav till they've done the damage. I'm getting a rage on just thinking about it!

robbing tw@s!!! this is getting too common, been thinking of the anti theft film you can have applied to your windows to stop it smashing, if they smash it and it doesn't break fully they may leave it as it will take them too long or they will get caught. shame we have to do these things though :(

was you parked somewhere quiet or something?

Think we need to come up with a plan for this...

I might stick some security torx bits in mine soon. Not gonna stop them from smashing the window and ripping off trim but if they havent got a security bit at least it will save your rns.

How about the "VW Navigation Lock" that was being advertised in Europe a few years back. I don't know if its available over here or even if its still made but its an idea to prevent those feckers.

From the Internet...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1049.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs399%2Fmcaborn%2FOther%2520cars%2F364d8903cbd32a66d39f4b60fd89a473_zpsc4b15f44.jpg&hash=68158fe9dcf90f3435072f78d412d6fea047e131)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1049.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs399%2Fmcaborn%2FOther%2520cars%2F2937cc3c6ff644a08c6491392d37d3e5_zps60390ca3.jpg&hash=5ddeee4b8a0f740f3c52e8b56c88ef53d0fe4a00)

Volkswagen have designed a lockable satellite navigation cover for its RNS 310 and RNS 510 models.

Volkswagen designed the cover following a spate of  navigation unit thefts from VW cars in Europe, such thefts becoming pretty endemic in Holland apparently.

The Navi Lock system locks a large metal plate over the entire navigation system, theoretically obscuring the hardware and making it more difficult to steal in the process. When owners are ready to use their nav screen, they simply unlock the plate using a key and go about their business.

The system is available for the VW Golf and Passat in Europe, but it’s not cheap either., costing 219 Euros including installation, but still cheaper than having to buy a replacement navigation unit.

Its a joke. Police confirmed that there's been loads done in last month in West Yorkshire.  :fighting:

Two units down from us have CCTV, been down and watched it.
The b@stards are sending some pikeys in first in a van to check things out then once thats gone and confirmed car has Nav the car comes in and lad gets to work. Couldn't make it out properly on Camera but it looks like a dark blue Renault.

I'm not joking the car comes in at 14:37 and at 14:38 its pulling out at some speed and gone!

Thats the thing mate, they had the cheek to come do it in a busy industrial unit. There's 9 units in ours and the top 5 units (including ours) are busy all day. The lass next door to us saw him do it. Parking car across front thinking nobody can see and he's crouching down between cars and getting in and out within a minute.

Think the best thing to do is tint front windows to at least 40-50% and just hope the rossers dont pull you over (saying that, will it make it through MOT?) think max is 30%.....

But still might be worth a shout.

what a joke, they want catching and there hands chopping off. i really wanted to upgrade mine for a rns510, all this is putting me off, you carnt have nothing these days.

hope you get everything sorted mate

Torx security screws are ok, but thief's may have them.....Im think a touch off hot glue gun in each screw and maybe hot glue the top part of the fascia....that 5 mins extra might might get them caught....although you will stall have smashed windows.

What is the max tint on fronts? and does it effect your insurance?

I used to be into my car audio, when you make it difficult to steal they will generally smash the screen or rip your seats, anything to get back at you for securing your property  :fighting:

Vw could release a firmware update causing all devices to require a code that's managed by a online account so you could reset it if needs be.

I saw on here someone took the front of a bog standard head unit and made it so it clips over the front of the rns maybe worth a search?

Thats what I was thinking, would be good if we could disguise the units so they look like a standard device.

I think diquise is the way to go, just need to find a guide how to do it, picking up a RDS 300 would be cheap enough, it the fascia may just slip over the original fascia??

I know this Is probably a daft idea would printing a colour picture print of a basic head unit and stick over your nav unit so if any thief looked in he would think u had a basic unit and move on .
Title: Re: Fuming!!!
Post by: red6688 on April 03, 2013, 09:53:57 am
Trekmeister idea of a false facia in disguise is a good one , some company should design a fake standard cover to stick over u nav unit . Car makers should design like the Audi where the screen is hidden then slides out ! Prob cost issue why they don't do this on all makes

It would need a code, there are tools out there for around £300 to do that or ebay sellers that get the code for £30

the deadlocking meant that the scumbag had to crawl inside. With all that broken glass it is odd that they don't cut themselves in the process and leave behind DNA

So sorry to see this.  :sad1:

This is one of the reasons im resisting our companies "efforts" for limited parking space, by offering season passes for a local NCP car park. At the moment i walk to work, but when we move house at the end of this month we will be commuting. Ive been on our car park waiting list for 6 years, and still dont have a space. Its a joke, but they are dreaming if they think im going to park my car in an NCP all day every day.

I was looking at this earlier. the only way i can see it fitting it if you removed the knobs from the RCD300 facia so you are left with 2 round holes. These holes would fit straight over the knobs of the RNS510... even then, it would not sit flush..

Thanks for all messages guys. Feeling a lot better than i were yesterday afternoon.

Window has been replaced today so i could at least drive it home and secure it. Going in to repair center Friday morning so be interesting to see how long its away for.

Does anyone know if the wiring loom and aerials to back of head unit are separate looms that go to fuse box etc or are they part of main cabin loom?

Needs wiring regardless anyway as 3 wires have been ripped clean out of connector and pins.

Looking at GPS antenna connector as well part of the plug from back of radio is still in the connector so if anyone is offered/buys a RNS510 with the antenna plug broken you know who's it is!!

Just read the post. What a horrible situation. Hope you get your car sorted and back to normal.

I thought head units getting stolen was generally a thing of the past.
Mrs T's car Satnav is integrated with a separate screen and controls. The only problem with them is that its harder to upgrade later.

First mod on my car was the latest and best alarm system I could possibly find!

Got the best Clifford, all singing and dancing alarm they had with an additional siren. Now if anyone comes near the car it will start chirping! Not set so that it chirps every time someone walks past but if anyone gets too close to the car.

Glass tamper sensors, proximity and tilt sensors all as standard.

At the end of the day these  theiving knobs will get what they want, however I will do as much as possible to delay them.

Ill post pics of how it looks and fits. Although the Navi lock looks pretty good, i dont have £180 to spare, and it may just be me, but i think if a dumbass thief saw the Navi Lock he will think your hiding some thing good and my give it try anyway if its dark or quite.

Ill post pics of how it looks and fits. Although the Navi lock looks pretty good, i dont have £180 to spare, and it may just be me, but i think if i dumbass thief saw the Navi Lock he will think your hiding some thing good and my give it try anyway if its dark or quite.
Looking forward to pics and feedback

No easy answer to this one!

However, it's still better than my old sat Nav:-

I have a little Satnav
I've had it most my life
It's better than the normal ones
My Satnav is my wife

It gives me full instructions
Especially how to drive
"It's thirty miles an hour", it says
"You're doing thirty five"

It tells me when to stop and start
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever
Safe to overtake

It tells me when a light is red
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively
Just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in front
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account
It specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car
It still gives its advice

It fills me up with counselling
Each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it
And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed,
It washes all my shirts and things
And - keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages
And my tendency to scoff,
I do wish that once in a while
I could turn the bugger off.

sorry to hear this happened.  i always thought this could happen to our cars with sat nav.
i at first wanted to tint my windows, but that isnt allowed by law.  so its a tough one what to do.   i think the best solution would be for someone to design a fake slim profile cover to fit straight over the rns510

First mod on my car was the latest and best alarm system I could possibly find!

Always makes me think of the car alarm from Phoenix Nights...

It's such a shame that this could make people get those nasty looking plugs just to secure the sat nav. I think it looks awful and would probably just take the risk and not have it if I had the option.
I have a pioneer avh8400bt double din unit. Does everything I want plus you can remove the screen.

On my Kenwood unit I can remove a strip across the top, which the unit does not work without but its so subtle that the dick warts would probably not notice its missing and still break in :fighting:

Which Kenwood do you have? I've got the 520VBT, can any of it be removed for security?

Well after reading the post on here over the weekend regarding the cars that had been broken into at Leeds/Bradford airport and had the RNS units stolen, imaging been told at work by the unit next to us that your car alarm is going off so you go out and find this!!

100% mate it will be same people that's done them. Waiting for CCTV to come through so we can have a look.
Had my window replaced yesterday and car is going into repair center tomorrow for estimate doing.

I'm also getting a estimate together for me to do the work myself through my work using bits from TPS.

They destroyed my wiring. The plugs for the GPS and two aerials are missing and have been snapped clean off... Also 3 pins and wires have been ripped clean out of the main block connector to back of head unit so i need the harness where ever its runs off to, Hope it isn't a complete cabin harness!!

Another one ffs , what a fkn mess this country is in where you cant have anything decent without hiding it or securing it. Why dont the police set up a 'bait car' with Nav fitted but with cameras in it etc for evidence and stake the thing out till this scumbag comes back , sound like he is local to W Yorks. It really puts me off wanting to upgrade my car in any way.

never mind setting a bait car with cameras

They should set one up with an exploding RNS, when the scum bags run off with it
