Title: Hello from Reading
Post by: cjchapman on April 03, 2013, 01:10:52 am
Hi Guys!

Purchased my mk5 gti about a month ago and loving it so far.

Ive had the wheels refurbed, they are 18inch monza 2s which sets the car off nicely.

Thinking about replacing the headlights as they seem pretty scratched. I have seen a group buy thread on the Hella ones, they are my first choice so far.

Any advice for a newbie?
Things to do next?

Cheers for the welcome guys.

Yeah ive got a to do list so far. The forum has been a great help so far!

Change the boot badge (discovered mine has whiteworm)
Change the wheel centre caps (they are all scratched up from before the refurb)
Find a GTI badge for the front as mines missing (dont know why i don't have one :s)
Possibly replace my MFD2 with an RNS510 with bluetooth (i want to be able to connect my iphone 5 either via bluetooth or cable)
Replace the front lights with Hella casings and osram nightbreaker bulbs.

Any help on these things would be greatly appreciated!

Center caps - ebay, few quid.

ipod connectivity can be done for like £80 and allows you to skip/rewind etc from the headunit or MFSW if you have one.

If your rear boot mech' has white worm you'll be after a newer Mk5 or a Mk6 3D version (they are both plug & play), both appear on here from time to time, can be bought from the VW Mian dealer for around £90 IIRC or contact brookesb32 (Simon) on here who does a nice job of modding rear mech's for peeps!

OEM Centre Caps are around £28 a set from the dealers and AFAIK the new ones don't suffer from white worm. Monza 2 Caps part number is 3B7601171XRW.

GTI badge is around £25 from the dealers or a copy can be had from eBay but make sure its an OEM one otherwise you'll have to modify it to fit in the same position as the original one.

RNS510 is a great Headunit, Version A and B sell for £350 ish and Version C onwards (LED display and bigger harddrive etc etc) sell for £450 ish plus. OEM Bluetooth systems can be bought (on here from Eddie-NL and installed be him when he has them in stock) on here. Around £200 ish.

And those front lights, save up and buy some xenons, pop up on here for around £500, sholud include bulbs, ignighters, ballasts and correct looms. Then its just fitting on top which many peeps on here can/will do for a fee.

You need VAGCOM as well for the lights to function correctly as well when you're fitting Xenons?

Thanks for the info guys.

Will probably go to the dealers for the centre caps and badge unless they have gone up in price, just to ensure they are OEM. Unless anyone knows where i could get them any cheaper?
Ive found this boot badge for sale. Will this be okay?

Also are any of these bluetooth kits any good?

RNS is a thing i might save for later but a good temporary ipod and bluetooth would be good. Ive looked into both the dension gateway lite bt and the xcarlink.

Also regarding the lights. Looking at the group buy section for the hellas so that would be 240 all in and as they are plug and play i was hoping to do them myself. I think the xeons sound good but are a bit out of my price range for now. Might look at changing for them at a later date.

Cheers!

Cheers for the inspiration alexmccabe

I like the idea of chrome switches, need to change the grab handles too mine are a bit scruffy looking.

I also like the idea of having cruise control and a MFSW but dont know how easy that will be to fit.

Depends on the year of your Golf. I think after late 2006 the wire for cruise was already installed. Mine however was not, so had to remove all the wiper motors... That was fun. I paid someone to do it. Haha

How much in total did you end up paying both to fit and buy the cruise control?

I've put in a few iPod kits on mine over the years. - They all operate and install the same way.
Takes 20 minutes to put in.

I got a guy off here to fit it for me. £20 he wanted, but I gave him £30 because he did it hungover in the freezing cold wind.
