Title: Forum limiting contact
Post by: nigw on April 03, 2013, 08:39:20 pm
Hi, I've been a member of the forum for quite a while, but not posted much. To be honest this is partly because I find that the restrictions on new member postings etc really discourages involvement - I'm sure there's a good reson for it, but it's far more restrictive than any other similar forum I've seen.

Anyway....I'd like to contact a member about their car for sale, but can't PM them due to their settings and cant reply to the message due to my restrictions! Rather than post for the sake of it to get my post up, is there any chance a mod could review my settings (or, if not, contact me to act as a go-between?!).

Thanks

Hi

You only need another 5 posts (outwith Random Chat) to be able to send PM, so you could fairly quickly be able to PM the seller  :happy2:

How about creating a thread of your car, in the members rides section (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/board,8.0.html), soon rack up 5 posts and worthwhile too.

It just stops people coming onto the forum & buying/selling or whatever straight away. If you go over to edition38 or the likes of. You have to have been a member for 3 months & over 1000 posts before you can post in for sale section. Were an easy bunch

Yeah most forums are tougher than this, 106oc you have to pay a membership to see for sale, pm and see how to guides

^^^^ as I've said before, peeps should be charged for selling on here. Would raise funds to help admin run the cracking site. I sell a few bits and would be more than happy to cough up. So many peeps just seem to come on here ONLY to buy a item in the "For Sale" section and bugger off, never getting involved afterwards.

Can't complain about a site which is free to join, free to sell in and free to buy from as its run well and for the benefit of ALL.

There are 7k members, let's say 2k are active in the last 12 months... why not introduce a £5 yearly recurring fee (easy to setup with Paypal), that would be £10k for server hosting and other stuff.

^^^^ I don't agree with charging peeps for being members BUT I'd charge peeps (even a nominal fee of £1 per listing) for selling items. In practice, i imagine, it would be a PITA to manage and maintain. If ALL members donated at least once a year it wouldn't be needed.

I don't really see a problem with that - after all, presumably forum members do want to sell things and it doesnt really matter if they sell to someone that spends all their time on a forum, or someone that visists once! People coming only to sell is a different thing though, and I'd agree on that.
