Title: MK 7 GTi
Post by: Stanipkiss on April 04, 2013, 10:50:29 pm
Evening all, just got back from Gadget show live in the NEC and for those not on facebook here are some pictures of the MK 7 GTi that was there. It was a manual left hooker but will give so some idea of what the UK version will look like.
All iphone 5 pics sorry

They also had demonstrations for park assist on lower spec MK 7's. It felt spooky not to steer, the parallel park was impressive but not so much for the bay parking.
Thanks for looking in

Like the pics, cheers for posting.

The button above 'DSC off' looks like the Audi button to switch off Stop/Start, so that looks like it's fitted. Or Start/Stop as some call it..

It's the sensor for the radar guided cruise control Rich, you'll probably notice eventually that most of them  (all I'd even go to say?) have that.

I'm looking at the pedals and thinking...  ... what happened to the floor mounted pedal? So much nicer..

Hmm, as others have pointed out, there definitely seems to be some areas where VW have taken a backwards step; the pedals! no, no, no (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AN1mntIDwk).  Also the steering wheel looks thinner, and.... is it round!? ...not flat bottomed!!

Plus, the wheels are crap, the brakes look the same poor mk5/6 setup, not a fan of the exhaust exposure either...

It grows on me more and more.
I dont like the tail lights (the shape) the steering wheel and wtf is going on with the pedals?!?! Oh and also those seats  the look sh*te, i love the look of the mk5 cloth seats as they look stocky and the way the headrest are is awesome, but these are just bland. Anyone know what the leathers look like? Or is there a big yummy recaro option

wheels would be alright if they didn't have the corner small triangles going right through, makes it too fussy & a bugger to keep clean.
don't like the rear led's too much either.

Saw a white one yesterday (not a GTI though) it looked good actually. I think some design touches are too far, the red str.ipe in the lights? Red stripe in door cards?? Queue some chav copy mods any folk chopping up their interiors to copy the look. That said, the new specs of the GTI, especially the performance version which for about another grand gets a LSD sounds like a usable addition, and the economy is allegedly 15% better, nigh on 45mpg I think.

Bit extreme because of a handbrake  i only see a problem if you are 17 and just passed your test.

My friends a4 has an electronic one, i really dont get why people are hating on it. Theres plenty worse out there, the ones you pull out of the dash and the silly foot pedel ones in the mercs  :scared:

Yeah, that was a concern to me.. it seems very ... uhh ... exposed, shall we say, to stonechips, small, low speed parking bumps. Adaptive cruise control has been around on cars for ages, and I have never seen whopping great big sensors mounted out front, I don't know why they couldn't have mounted it further back out of harms way, or incorporated it into the headlights somehow.

It's great they are giving away basically on nearly every car, but still... :surprised:

I am not a Fan of electronic handbrakes but I wouldn't not own a car because of one... I think that's just a bit daft, but each to their own.  :P

The car is growing on me more than the MK6 did. I would just stick with the 18" wheels. The front radar sensor ruins the front view which concerns me. If I wanted to buy a new car, I'd be sorely tempted.

Post by: camfollower on April 06, 2013, 09:36:23 am
What was the thinking behind the pedals?  The floor mounted accelerator ones are much nicer.
I prefer a manual handbrake.

Wheels are foul... They should have given it better brakes too... This is a 220 bhp, 30 grand car, what's wrong with some 4 pots!?  They were in the parts bin from the 225bhp cupra r, 6 billion years ago. :rolleye:

They've given and taken away all in the same breath to keep costs down and profits up.  Like the mk6 rear which doesn't have cut outs for the tips, so that it can be used on other models.  Volvo did the same thing with estate t5.

As for the claimed mpg, 45mpg urban.... Bullllllsh*t.  Other than that and the red line through the headlights and gopping sensor up front, I'm sure it's very nice.

Its Nothing to do with seeing it on top gear.

I drive a lot of hire cars through going away on jobs with my work and the vast majority of them are fitted with electronic handbrakes, I just hate them, they are dimwitted take an age to operate and obviously you can't modulate a button.
Me no Like em ! :happy2:

There are absolutely no advantages to a keen driver with an electronic handbrake IMO

The handbrake should be an emergency brake as much as a parking tool.  Had one on the old Tiguan, I agree they are dimwitted and useless other than parking up.

I've had an electric brake on my jag and it was fine. If the all brakes totally fail use engine braking and then hit something gentle like a hedge. If VW can do DSG I'm sure they can do a semi sensible electric parking brake.

I'm going to say this has grown on me.

I don't think the wheels are too bad, they are ultimately an option as is the Cloth trim.

I don't think they could carry on with Monza's anymore...

I have also found the GTI's MPG rating not far off the mark? Sure 35.3 combined MPG on MK5 GTI doesn't always happen but that's what stop/start driving does to any car.

As for the E-Handbrake I agree seems a bit needless?

In an emergency situtation, engine braking really isn't going to help much, even if you have time to mash it into a low enough gear.  A manual handbrake will at least lockup the rears and shave a decent amount off.

Post by: mad_pete on April 06, 2013, 04:36:36 pm
Who here has had total brake failure on a car say up to 8 years old and this is a brand spanking new car, i don't think you are going to drive off the forecourt and get total brake failure. With the wheels locked there is questionable ability to steer and if both normal  brake systems fail under emergency heavy braking I'd be surprised if you have time to do something meaningful with the handbrake.  I guess the e brake is partially there for the older generation that have trouble getting the manual one on and off. But each to their own I just don't view the handbrake as some sort of back up parachute on modern cars.

I really like the Mk7 design but the Gti.........

Wheels - not a lover of these types similar to those on the megan rs, fiddly to clean and will no doubt be covered in white worm in no time.
Front end - Much nicer than the Mk6 but that sensor thingy looks ridiculous.
Rear  - Looks like it's not been finished, tail pipes are just hovering in thin air.
Interior - Lush dash and instruments and quite like the led idea but the seats look very cheap.

Would I have one? Yes, like it better than the Mk6.

My Mother has the ADC sensor on hers (a 2.0 TDI GT MK7) and its actually far less obvious than it looks in photos, though certainly more so than the sensor for the Active Cruise Control on our BMW. I'm not sure but maybe it's so big because it has something to do with the pre-crash detection system?

As for the GTI wheels, it seems a lot of people are confusing the option wheels with the Monza-esque ones that come as standard.

Regarding the new pedal arrangements I wonder whether VW are perhaps listening to the motoring press a little with this car.
And maybe not customers..in that they now offer the Performance Pack diff etc

And.... I recall that Phil Bennett, Touring Car/GT Driver bloke was saying in press/websites that the normal throttle pedal set up (as we know in Mk5's etc) was a hindrance to smooth heel/toe action, so normal pedals would have been better in his view.

Bit hazy on the full detail of the story but that was the gist of it, I wonder if that may have been considered to lead us to the Mk7 pedal arrangements..just my 2p worth.

I'd be massively surprised if heel/toe action was anything to do with new pedal arrangement. I think it's more likely a cost-cutting exercise.

I like the look of this car overall. Much prefer the 'Austin' alloys, panoramic sunroof option , pedals may not look the best but that's more to do with safety it seems.

Quote
Safety pedals are designed to minimise the risk of injury to the driver in a head-on accident. The programmed deformation ensures that the brake and clutch pedal do not penetrate further into the driver's footwell during an accident. In the event of a frontal crash, the pedals are moved out of the way or disengaged by means of a lever mechanism.

Why have they got rid of the floor mounted pedal?  One of the features I like about the interior.

IIRC don't the MK7s now come with a "knee airbag"?
They lost the floor mounted pedal so it moves out of the way in a crash

Went to my dealers earlier just to grab a brochure on the GTi.
They are running a dark blue 5 door demonstrator and offered me a drive.
Didn't wanna appear rude and say no..
So gonna be giving it a thrap on Sat am.

Really like the Mk7. But still really like my Ed30...

Think if I go Mk7 it will need to be a 40 (if they do one) or an R but see what it steers like on Sat.

Sales lad told me it's on 21 week lead time at the mo. which may be sales patter of course.

Personally I don't like the backlights, they should have upgraded to strip led instead of dots but overall nice car

Had a good mooch around one the other day and on a whole I quite like it and might seriously think about one in a couple of years time because on paper it'll be cheaper to run than my S-line Tdi.........still not a fan of the seats though look like a step back from the mk5/6 seats.

Test drove one.
Normal one no LSD no power pack.
Drove very nice and interior is lovely as I've said before.
Looks odd in pictures but in real world it's very well proportioned.

Better than the mk5.5,sorry mk6. Like them 19''alloys something diffrent for a change. Only thing i dont like is the way the red grill strip is carried on into the headlights..Sat in one at the Harewood show & there very smart inside.

This car just looks pure evil, if only i had the money. The only thing that lets it down is the automatic hand brake thing, cant beat having a proper one. Wonder how many problems they'll give?

Rear lights look to square for me.

Much prefer the mk5 and mk6 as there more round and don't look out of place

I had thought the same about the rear lights until one parked up next to me at the weekend. Seems to fit in very well with the edges on the exterior

I do like the look of the new mk7 Golf R but it doesnt make sense that the golf GTI should look better :/
Also the quad tailpipes do not do it for me.. its a sin that a 4 pot engine should have these lol v8s and above are allowed lol

I was passing a vw dealer last weekend and thought I'd stop to have a perv on the new gti and R, I love the white gti mk7 in the pics I've seen but seeing one in white in the flesh did nothing for me at all was one in grey which did look better but I just didn't get that instinct love/want like I did when I first seen the mk5.

Anyways just seen a new leon cupra 280 in orange  now that I want!

I like it a lot but not convinced whether I'd replace this with one. S1/ S3 or Polo/ Golf R next I think for the extra performance. Leon Cupra 280 looks nice but seems quite track oriented and very much chasing after RenaultSport.

Or leave VAG and get a M135i...

The one in this month's evo was vinyl wrapped apparently, so I'm guessing that orange will only become available if their plan was to gauge how popular that press car proves...
