Title: Fitting boost gauge
Post by: iainalpine on July 30, 2009, 02:05:22 pm
Ok guys, a quick question and request of some of your wisdom. What is the best route for running a vacuum hose(for boost gauge) into the cabin of the mk5. Im going to be fitting the new south gauge next week which will be just in time for putting the Forge FMIC on.

cheers

Iain

Ian , I have replied via PM  :happy2:

where do you plan to take the feed from?

its a bit different for you , as you need to route a boost pipe , whereas for the DEFI I had to route an electrical wire.
same principal though.

depending on where you take the feed from , it can go through bulkhead either near battery or above pedals.
I chose the former.

also do a search on golfmkv.com , as many US guys have fitted the new south gauge.

have a read and see what you think

i fed mine down the front wheel arch and in through a hole near the fuse box.

also if you look on the other side there is a hole in the firewall with a bung in it that comes out.

Cheers for all the info there guys.

Joe, some good areas to go and look at there. Cant believe your getting rid of the car. R32 is lovely but you defo feel it throwing it into the bends. would say not as chuckable as the gti. good luck with whatever you end up doing.

There's a rubber plug behind the 12V battery. You can cut off one of the "nipples" on the plug and feed the wire through from there. It will arrive in the passenger side of the vehicle; take off the foam cover from under the dash, and you will see where the wire comes through. From there you can feed it across to the driver's side. It is very neat and the integrity of the firewall is not compromised.
I also recommend use of the DEFI gauge as it passes an electrical signal through instead of allowing boost vacuum routed through into the passenger cabin.

nice link neg , Ive added it to my product review if thats OK  :happy2:
bring a tear to your eye ?

vacuum line gauge  = route driver side
electrical line gauge = either side routing

No problem at all, saved me moving it

It does actually, I was thinking only yesterday how I miss the paddles and DSG exhaust note change  :sad1:

I'll be bringing some of the mk5GTI back out later - the Monza's are going on the Wife's Touran

Thanks for all this. another quick question, where are you tapping into for the vacuum line. I used to always go for the Fuel Pressure Regulator, is that the best option here?

Forge and BSH both make a multitap thingy that will go into the vacuum line and provide you with a tap point.

where do you fit the multi tap thing for the boost gauge? do you really need to use this as i think the gauge (new south) is supplied with a "T" peace for this very function.

Forge one goes in the same location.

And t-piece fitting is fail, not nearly street or shiny enough.

Really.

^^^^
and prone to causing leaks!

a kit of some form another is well worth it  :happy2: (I used forge one..)

you can also take a signal from an aftermarket forge DV if you have one fitted...

You may as well have gotten the full forge dv as John_O suggests.

Forge+BSH ftw.

Cheers neg for a great write up :congrats:

Followed this guide to fit mine today, really good write up, made it tons easier :happy2: only thing is i now reckon i,ve got a major boost leak  as it's spiking at just 11psi (gutted) :sad1:

Sure the boost leak isn't occurring because of faulty installation?

^^^ Agreed, if it wasn't for the fact it doesn't work with OEM bluetooth installed I would have brought this a long time ago  :sad1:

kufatec is really slick but a moving needle conveys far more 'dynamic' info  :happy2:

What's the sampling rate like on the Kufatec stuff? I keep meaning to buy their Bluetooth thing. I imagine it's just picking data up from the CAN right?

indeed at that level you are running std boost levels as joe states
Id guess you may have defaulted back to stock if the batteries been disconnected etc

Thats what i thought but the battery has never been dissconnected, got it booked in at a place near me who reckons he can do a pressure test on it to see if there are any leaks, if there are no leaks then i'll get in touch with custom code to see if they can check the map, so fingers crossed it should be sorted soon.

When I fitted my boost gauge I had a problem with the charge air sensor which was replaced under warranty by VW.

If your idiling ok then its maybe not a leak in the piping. You would see your boost going up just beyond the 11psi then dropping back down to the 11psi. Rememer this happening on one of my old cars.

Had the new d revision one fitted 2 months ago, so would be surprised if it's that.

Been out blasting about a bit today and noticed the boost is dropping off just before 4000revs, so that would sugest to me that it's leaking when under load.

Boost gauge now fitted. very very easy job. Have DSG so there is nice bug cover that was easy to take of where the clutch pedal should be. Posted pics in members rides.

I do not know whether it is the right place for the question, if I'm wrong, I'm sorry
I am interested in your opinion for this boost gauge?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-2-36-60mm-LED-Light-7-Colours-Universal-Car-Auto-Boost-Gauge-Turbo-Black-/112247887249

and whether it can be installed in my GTI?
Thank you in advance for your reply! :drinking:
