Title: Ed 30 Std Clutch with Stage 1 Remap - first signs of a problem?
Post by: nutey on April 24, 2013, 08:48:36 am
Hoping to go for a test drive at the weekend in an Ed30 with Stage 1 Remap but still on the standard clutch. The car's done about 70k and the owner has told me it's not slipping but the bite point is quite high...

Does that sound like the clutch could be on the way out? It's my only concern as the car looks great and is in really nice condition but could do without a big bill straight after buying the car!

If the car wasn't so far away - 3 hours each way - it wouldn't be so bad but it's a big trek if the Clutch is on it's way out...

Just stick the car in 6th and floor it from a low rpm if its going to slip it will do it in the high gears due to the torque

Cheers for that, I'll give it a go.

If it does slip then I guess it's a bargaining tool at least... Then it sounds like it's a lottery as to whether the DMF needs replacing too.

What should it feel like?

Also you need to be wary of what map it has on, i know a couple of guys on here who have adjusted the settings right down on their map so as it doesnt slip.  :happy2:

To be honest I'll probably see if I can revert to the standard map as I can't find much on the guys that have mapped it. My concern is that the clutch may already be goosed!

I'd assume if it was slipping you'd get an increase in revs but not the same increase in road speed if the clutch is ok then the car would just accelerate as normal - but if I'm talking rubbish please correct me

The clutch doesnt have to be worn to slip. Its the springs on the cover plate losing their strength more than wear on the clutch plate. A high bite usually indicates a worn clutch plate, but if the cover is strong it wont slip.

As others have said, the torque delivery is what puts a strain on the clutch, not necessarily the fact that its mapped.

My GTI slipped on Stage 1 straight away although when put back to standard it was fine
