Title: Replacement Key
Post by: Kavichauhan on April 24, 2013, 01:50:39 pm
Hi all,

I am about to make a deal on a MK5 GTi, but the car only has 1 key!

Does anyone have any idea where or how much a replacement may set me back???

Thanks

Gosh that is expensive!

I dont understand how there is only one key, the vehicle only has one owner and was owned by a business. I am buyer from a car dealer who took the car in as part-ex, I may just get in contact with the previous owner and see how i get on!

i got a key off of ebay for £28.25 posted, took it to a lock smith who cut the blade but said he could not code it, so no charge. when i took the car to VW for its service i asked them to code the key to the car, they did and charged me £40.

That sounds much better thanks!

I have had a quick look on ebay abd there are loads on there. Anything in particular I need to look out for? Something in the region of about £30 that can be programmed?

Thanks

I got my key myself done for under £30 with pairing.

The key is in 2 parts, the chip which is in the key half, and the remote control.

I bought the correct remote control for around £15 and a blank chip for £11. Both off ebay.

Got the key cut for a few quid, put it all together, and used vcds to program it.

Once the chip is used, it cannot be used on another car, so you would need a blank one.

Im not sure I will know what I am doing attempting to program a key myself!

Will just stick to getting a key form ebay and getting it programmed by VW - I just rang them and they said £54. So, with the £40 key from ebay, all in looking at £94 plus the cost to get it cut of course.

Not bad.

was talking to a mobile locksmith last week, he recons he does'nt touch ebay keys anymore, had too much come back from them going wrong, only uses dealer keys now..but hey might be just a sales story. Just got a vauxhall corsa key for £129 all in from dealer.

I spoke to VW earlier and they want in the region of £200, they did ask if the key was from ebay but said they will still programme it.

Will just check the feedback from the seller before I buy it!

After my van was stolen and the guy that came out to interview me from insurance found out I had only 1 key from when I bought it he went all funny, Basicly saying never ever buy a car/van with one key again as a rule and said the insurance can be funny aswell.

So anyway its the first thing I ask before even going to see a car now as anyone could hold a spare and steal at free will.

hi, I know what you mean I was a bit concerned that there was a spare key out there somewhere, but when I spoke to VW they said that they can recode both the keys (so the original and the spare off eBay) and so if there is another out there somewhere it won't work!
