Title: Car keeps needing coolant!
Post by: cjchapman on April 24, 2013, 10:21:01 pm
Hi guys.

Ive had my car just over three months now. i had it fully serviced around a month ago, in which it needed some coolant as it was below minimum. a week later it was back below minimum again, and a week after that it went back below minimum again. This is now a full litre bottle of coolant used in 3 weeks. i forgot about it for a while, then two days ago it started bleeping at me saying stop, needs coolant i proceeded to check it and sure enough it was below minimum again. i topped it back up with another bottle of coolant, i then checked it today and it was back below minimum again so ive now put some more in.
On a side note, not sure if the two are linked but at the moment every time i go out for a drive at the moment the engine fan starts going fast like its trying to suck in alot of air even if im just poodling about on a short 5 minute trip.

Any help would be appreciated!

Really hope this is just a simple leak that can be fixed. Ive heard of something called k-seal, has anyone had any experience of it?

Thanks in advance!

If your losing coolant there will be a leak somewhere. Check the thermostat for water marks and check coolant hoses for signs if damage.

If an early model mk5 then have a proper look at your radiator as they are known to corrode and leak at the bottom.

Ditto what Bacillus said, mine is an April 2005 GTi, had to replace my radiator last year!! Do BOTH your fans actually work??

Check your rad as they leak towards the end tanks. Also the flange connected to the coolant pipes leak also.
