Title: Who cleans undercarriage?
Post by: Trekmeister on April 25, 2013, 02:01:47 pm
I regularly use a cold water pressure washer to give the cars underbody a wash, do other members regularly do similar to their cars and do any of you perform extra steps etc to keep the chassis clean and free from rust etc?

I snow foam and jet wash the arches.. thats it.

Remember.. its a golf not a 500,000 pound supercar.

And if you look underneath it is predominantly covered with plastic panelling.
You would need to take all of that off to clean it properly.

Possibly worth a blast now and again though.

I tend to give it a quick blast during washing, esp. during the winter months with all the salt on the road.

Ive not gone mad, but mainly during winter with the heavy salt on the roads, each week i would use the jet wash under the car to keep salt washed off as much as possible.

Karcher chassis wash. Its good but to be honest at standard ride height it wont go under the front of the car, which is covered by the engine tray anyway, or the rear.

My brother has used it more than I have for his Juke.

Generally only once the salt on the roads isn't being used any more and its rained a couple of times, but I use one of hte below which also does the arches a lot better.

Surely all the rain washes the salt off anyway...??

Each to their own.... Some people take pride in their cars, even of areas that aren't visible too everyone. About once a month I'll jack mine up and snow foam the under side and then dress the plastics with CG's bare bones or Megs ASD. Keeps on top of it. Also use an under body lance.  :happy2:

Why's that then? For taking care of my car? Detailing is a hobby of mine aswell as a part time job being a firefighter full time so I get a fair amount of time off. Just out of interest what are you hobbies?

I have the same AB UB lance as Fish. Only really use it in winter. Road salt leads to rust so good enough reason to rinse the car down regularly in winter.

I remember one guy who had a pit created in his garage so he could rinse down his car after every drive. It was a restored E-type though.

You're stupid if you don't occasionally clean the underside of your car in the winter in this country, the amount of grit they chuck at the roads will over time rot away at anything metal, plastic or rubber etc.

I've spent a lot of time holidaying & living in the Alps over the years and in the car washes there most have a full-on underbody jetwash lance to use if you need it, and most do.

I do mine after every winter , just at the local jetwash - get a few funny looks off people who wonder why I'm only washing the underneath and not the top!!
