Thanks to one of our forum member's, I was entrusted with the honour of installing a high end audio system in his beloved GTi Pirelli.
What an amazing car, probably THE most sorted MK5 out there with ballistic performance, both accelerating and stopping wise.
The brief was simple, top end components and great sound quality and a minimalist boot build. The components list is as below:
Audison Voce Quattro amplifier
Audison Voce 5.1k amplifier
Hertz Mille MLK 3PA - 3 way component system
Hertz Mille MLK 2TW - 2 way component system
Sound deadening by Skinz
Cabling, distribution and Capacitors by Connection by Audison
All of this is being driven by Alpine's top of the range INE-W928R 8" Fully featured head unit.
Here is a pic of everything that was to go into the car.

First off, started with stripping all the trim out of the interior, and then running the various cables required.

Then proceeded to remove the door skins and apply a good covering of Skinz sound deadening, along with running the new speaker cables through the factory OEM positions into the door.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh147%2Fsqueeguk%2FAvante%2FDSCF4025.jpg&hash=6259a673aeada75395fd208eff3a538272572bfb) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/squeeguk/media/Avante/DSCF4025.jpg.html)
Cables in the door were wrapped with cloth tape and neatened up, along with placing the woofers into the doors.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh147%2Fsqueeguk%2FAvante%2FDSCF4035.jpg&hash=ef694fd96a0717e8d57f93b9a5351f1783b5753c) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/squeeguk/media/Avante/DSCF4035.jpg.html)
Custom mdf mounts had to be fabricated for the mid range speakers. The doors were also covered in Skinz panel liner to ensure no resonance of the panel.

Once the doors had been taken care of, the head unit was installed and the RCA interconnects run down the middle of the car under the central trim.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh147%2Fsqueeguk%2FAvante%2FDSCF4026.jpg&hash=36fdeae58f980131cc54ca0042121b57d416e970) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/squeeguk/media/Avante/DSCF4026.jpg.html)
The interior could then go together while the boot build started. Here is the board all cut and carpeted. There is a frame underneath which allows all the cables to be run underneath hidden and provides rigidity to the board to prevent it warping.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh147%2Fsqueeguk%2FAvante%2FDSCF4039.jpg&hash=dea8ded13db76cdf37abb7b1c082ceb7d54729d0) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/squeeguk/media/Avante/DSCF4039.jpg.html)

Once the carpeting had been done, the components were screwed down onto the board and the cabling sorted it was installed in the car. Some Skinz sound deadening was placed around the spare wheel well to help reduce the noise in this area. The wheel well area was kept clear as the second stage of the build will involve a subwoofer and a complete rebuild of the boot area to accommodate this.

Last point of business which had been put off was to complete the A pillars with tweeters covered in genuine Alcantara. These were positioned ever so slightly off axis.

This is what the dash looks like with the Alpine 928R in place.

During the build last week, I also had the opportunity to fit an amplifier, Alpine IVE-W535BT and new speakers in the owners son’s Corsa VXR Nurburgring.
Both cars sound incredible, but the outstanding impression of the system in the Golf is superb clarity. There is still loads to come from the system, with the speakers needing to be broken in and then the system fully tuned to the customer’s taste.

very indeed and excellent work
-
Great job there but how much does all of that weigh?!
-
amazing work :drinking:
-
Thanks guys.
Does weigh quite a bit Joe, but the aim was to keep it as light as possible, hence the really simple boot build using only 9mm thick MDF. The two amps, being top notch Audison units, came in at 14.5 kgs in total. Having said that, the car has an obscene amount of power and the spare wheel was also removed.
-
^^^ i bet it sounds amazing without it OTT and in your face
-
Amazing job......... :happy2:
A couple of questions if I may...
Why you haven't use the OEM position for the tweeters..?
Why no sub?

A couple of questions if I may...
Why you haven't use the OEM position for the tweeters..?
Why no sub?
Thanks.
To answer your questions:
1. The OEM tweeter position is too low to be properly effective when it comes to the overall sound staging. Having them in the A pillars allows you to aim them effectively and bring them up closer to ear level which seems to provide a more natural sound. Having them in the stock locations means they are very close to the mids. This system has been built with pure SQ in mind, hence the only option was to pillar mount the tweeters.
2. You would be amazed how good it sounds without the sub, which great bass thanks to the 6.5" woofers in the stock locations. This setup will probably cover 90% of all music you could want to listen to. The sub only really coming into it's own when very low frequencies are being played. Having said that, the second phase of this build is to have a totally reworked boot area with either a 10" or 12" sub in the wheel well. The only reason this wasn't done from the word go was due to time constraints as the customer lives outside of the UK and only comes home occasionally. Didn't want to take up all his holiday time, hahahahahaha.
Hope this clarifies?

Very nice Luis. :happy2:

Could you pm me the estimated labor costs for installing all this bar the rear components?

Very nice Luis. :happy2:
Thanks mate, much appreciated.

Hahahahaha, to be perfectly honest, I think this car has no idea what shopping is, let alone a shopping trip. This is more like a rolling example of what can be done with a MK 5.

Fantastic install Luis and so much detail, love the look of that head unit! :happy2:
-
Awesome stuff Luis! :happy2:
Been thinking about getting some sound deadening for the door panels to make them sound a bit more substantial!

Hahahahahaha, nice one Sanj, as soon as my RNS is gone, I get mine. Alpine have it waiting on the shelf............ How are you enjoying yours?
Awesome stuff Luis! :happy2:

Does make a big difference. When you close the doors after, it sounds really solid with a dull thud. You can hear a marked difference from a door that hasn't been done. I got loads in stock, let me know and I will sort you some out, not that expensive.

Awesome install Luis, this must sound epic!

Loving mine Luis it was one of the best thing's i've ever done to my Edition30,just saving my money to by a decent set of front component speaker's and a small amp to drive them, would love to see your car with your Alpine finally installed!Once again I must thank you for all you've done for me when thing's messed up on my headunit install and you were alway's there to sort it out,top man! :happy2:

It most definitely does. The clarity right through the volume range is something else. Still needs more fine tuning, but as a base to start with, it's awesome.

Hi Luis
Just arrived back in Hong Kong mate and just wanted to thank you once again for the work on my Pirelli and also my sons car and also a big thanks to your wife for keeping us fed when we were down there. Both cars sound absolutely brilliant and everyone who got to hear the sound quality and see the quality of the install in my Pirelly were blown away by it. The car is cleaned and in the garage with the cover on it awaiting my next trip back to the UK in a couple of weeks, I will try to pop up and see you when back but just in the UK on the Friday and Saturday.
For anybody out there thinking of getting an audio install done then Luis is the man to do it. His attention to detail is awsome and he treats the car like it is his own and does a great job. I gave him a hand on my car and my sons car and mine took 5 full 10-12 hour days, the work involved is mind boggling and a lot more demanding than I am sure most of us think, I was under the understanding that it could be done in 2-3 days but practically all the interior came out and door skins off etc. and at times it was quite frightening seeing my pride and joy like that but Luis was the man for the job and the couple of clips that were broken on panels etc. that were removed he re-ordered and had delivered the next day and he even called in a dent repair guy to fix an almost unnoticeable dent on the rear panel that was allready there as it was the ideal opertunity when we had the car stripped out. When the car was completed he hovered and cleaned it and even wet sanded and polished out some scratches on my sons mates car when he popped in to see us. 100% genuine guy with a passion for the work he turns out.
Regards Paul

Excellent wright up Paul-Be seeking some work of Luis when i get my intercooler sorted
-
Hey Paul
Glad you got back OK.
Thanks very much for the kind words, very much appreciated. Was a pleasure working with you on the car and can't wait to do the second stage and the other mods we spoke about.
See you in a couple of weeks.
-
nice install dude! would love to have the cash to preform a high end install like yours! bet the sound is awesome!
-
Wow great build, some crazy power running through it, must sound emmense. That headunit is gorgeous, where did the double din facia come from? Looks like a great match, exactly what im after. Thank you
-
Thanks guys, yeah big power, but superb sound quality which was the main aim of the system. Sounds incredible. Crystal clear right through the range, and still some final tuning to come.

That fascia is an lpine kit for the INE-W928R which comes with the unit specifically for the MK5's. This is an 8" screen so won't fit in normal vehicles. If you would like one, send me a pm, I have supplied a few now and everyone is extremely happy with them.
-
I was looking at RNS and Bluetooth but that alpine unit is very tempting
-
Yeah, it is an amazing unit and integrates with the MK5 better than any other after market radio I have seen. The 8" screen is just a bonus.
-
WOW! Great install and what a bit of kit!!
