Title: Cam timing chain
Post by: andygo on May 02, 2013, 04:38:45 pm
Has anyone replaced one of these, and if so how easy are they to swap?

How do you tell if they need swapping out?

just had mine done the parts are the dearest part parts I think was about 600 quid and a few hours labour but make sure you take it to a vw specialist as you need an special tool to hold cam pulley or it can be expensive and believe me not all garages have this tool you will hear a loud knocking from left side off the car when it reaches temperature

£600 for parts, that's mental. Fortunately there's no loud knocking from my car so I'm ok.

I thought these was a cam belt not chain as I had the belt and tensioner done not so long ago

The cams are joined by a chain but crank and camshaft joined by belt?

Exhaust cam is driven by the crankshaft via a toothed belt, then the cam chain connects to both cams which rotates the inlet cam.

What are the symptoms to look out for that it needs replacing?

Mine sounds a bit like a diesel when its starting up but then is pretty quiet after.

No the cam belt does need replacing after so many miles or years what ever comes first, don't know what them figure are for the gti tho ha.

If its needs replacing you will hear a rattling/tappet noise when the engine is warmed up and idling.

you will here a knocking from left side off the engine and also will get louder when the car gets to temperature my worry was that if the chain slips it could take engine with it

Is there a DIY guide to change the cam chain and tensioner? I can't find one

AXX Engine code are the worst affected. Managed to get it done on my first GTI (05 reg) under a warranty.

Prices might be out of date as from an old thread. Plus think the cam tensioner sometimes needs replacing and that is the pricey part, circa £300.

chain -      part no. S06D109229B    RRP £42.06
tensioner - part no. S06F109217A    RRP £66.53
gasket -    part no. 06D103121B      RRP  £4.13
seal -        part no. 06E127248       RRP  £5.57
gasket -     part no. 06F103483D    RRP  £15.61

I've recently had a full service and now I have the loud diesel ticking noise form the left side (whilst looking at the engine) only when its warm. Its really noticeable from inside the car and I hate it.

The stealers had it in and could not explain it, so I thinking of taking it to an indy and mentioning the cam chain perhaps.

When I mentioned it to the stealers they didn't know what I was talking about  :rolleye:

............sounds like the problem i had & it was the chain/tensioner that needed replacing. 05 Reg &  AXX engine code by any chance?.

I have had the same noise from when I got the car. It has been getting louder recently.
I did an' inlet valve clean up' this morning -(post on this to follow) - and then an Italian tune up to clear the system. Couple of red lines and some revs up the A3. I normally drive pretty gently.
One of the first things I noticed when I got back, less noise from that area ...... Can't really explain it other than my brief session of spirited driving 'freed' something up?

take a look here  mate just had mine done

it will be the adjuster that is at fault
you will be looking for the 500 to 600 pound in parts and 3 to 4 hours labour but make sure where you take it to they have the cam pulley holder tool as if they havent labout charges go through the roof mate my total bill was 1500 quid but had a new cam and also dsg service on the box

Thanks for the link

Question is will it cause a problem to not do it? Apart from sounding pants on tick over it drives fantastic
