Title: Spark plug tip snapped
Post by: Pikey Motorsports on May 02, 2013, 11:17:00 pm
Been having a few probs with my edition 30 lately had some shuddering with the emissions light flashing while accelerating on the motorway, seem to have cleared up but thought was down on power.. few days later was getting misfires while coming on boost and on idle..

swapped the plugs and coils out to find no 3's tip had broken off inside the bore.. used a bore scope camera to check inside and found some slight damage to the wall with no sparkplug tip insight.. chucked some plugs in and coils and car is running okay now.. seems to be burning a little oil so going to do a rebuild soon.. luckily was planned for the big turbo upgrade anyway..

anyone heard of this before on the gti? after looking online it seems its happened to a lot of people on various cars using bosch plugs

Did you manually gap your plugs?

Mines just done this on cylinder 2. Had a bit of oil around the end of the could pack too?

Your all ok now, could this be anything to do with map? Running lean?

I have a 'Black Museum' of failed parts from a lot of years of motoring. In there are at least 5 Bosch plugs with broken tips, massive unaccountable erosion, broken ceramics, misfires etc.
Bosch are a major supplier and many folks have had no problems at all.
I just don't trust them. NGK for me, wherever possible
