Can being booked in for a service, had minor service last year at 43000 miles not being service at 48,800 miles is it worth having a major service (air filter, spark plugs etc..) is there any thing else I should get done while it is there

Possibly cam follower and at 48k miles its time to start thinking about the cambelt change being due soon

Thank you - Cambelt was done last year at 43,000 miles, is it overkill to change the plugs and air filter as these were changed two years ago at 38,000 miles. Divertor Valve and PCV have not been touched but service department saying that this is not necessary. The car is an 07 Edition 30

Plugs prob don't need changing. I think VW say every 40k unless there is a problem!
Worth checking the air filter and changing if required.
DV valve rubbers seem to split with annoying regularity, so worth checking. Also seeing if you have Revision G valve - someone will correct me if that's the wrong Rev,
PCV valve is easy to check - do a quick search for the procedure here.

Plugs on GTI are every 60k. Standard Golf is 40k. The GTI uses higher quality plugs.
