Morning Guys,
Just a bit of opinion needed really?
Back at the beginning of march i had a full service done on my car including a full oil change.
When i got into my car this morning the Oil check notification came up, 2 months seems to be a short time period to be going through that much oil, or is that just me?
Many Thanks

We bought our GTi from a dealer on 16th April this year and our oil check light came on over the weekend. I thought this was a bit strange considering we havent done that much milage since purchasing the car and I would off assumed the dealers would have topped up the oil before sale. However, after checking the internet i've read that on a couple of sites the MK5 does seem to need topping up quite regularly. We had a MK4 2.0cc Gti prior to the Mk5 and that drank oil like a lunatic. Just my observations but hope they help mate.
-
This probably doesn't help but in the 2yrs and 17,000 miles I've had my car (05 with 83k) i've never had to top the oil up once. :jumpmove:
-
If you read the manual, VW says 1 litre to 1000km oil usage is normal.... :scared: I for one would be mortified if my golf used that much as my 20 year old nissan doesnt use a drop..
Mine uses a litre every 6-8 months. / 7-9000 miles
-
OK so we have a 50/50 split. Maybe it is something linked to the engines, As far as i know there were different engines used in the mk5 GTi over its life time. I'm not sure what engine type i have but it is an '06 plate if that helps?
Many Thanks
-
possibly a BWA it says on your engine block, drivers side just below the oil cap
-
I too have never topped up the oil on my 05 Gti (67k), 14,000 miles in just over a years ownership and not a single drop!
-
I have a theory that the engine is designed to use a little oil to clean the valves, seeing as no fuel passes over them being a direct injection engine.
I have no evidence whatsoever to back this up. Feel free to flame me!
-
Mine uses some if I've been hooning it, otherwise it's steady. I just always check regularly and carry 1L in the boot.
-
Mine has always varied. For the first 10k, it drank nothing. Then loads. Then nothing. Agreed it seems to vary with respect to car usage. Pootling around seems to mean very little usage. Blasting it around and it uses more.
-
Oil usage is generally down to how the engine has been run in. A gentle run in will not seal the pistons as well and therefore will burn a little oil.
An engine "thrashed" from new generally wont use as much oil.
My old BWA engine used a litre every 2k miles. :happy2:
The way I see it, putting FRESH OIL into your engine inbetween servies is no bad thing
-
Just check my oil... engine running and nearly shat myself as it looked like it was empty! :scared: :scared:
Got home and parked on the level... engine off, and there is some oil in there :jumping:
Ive done ~8000 miles since it was last serviced and the oil changed.
Here is the result.... ive not put a drop in since.

I at first thought the light could have come on because my drive is on a hill. so not level. Bt the light did not disappear when i was driving on level ground.
At the moment its parked in the work car park that is level and flat. Is it possible that the light will go out when i go and start up the car tonight?
Many Thanks

^^^ Buy some oil and put it in before you drive home tonight. Or at least get some at the nearest garage on the way home.

My 2005 50,000 mile AXX engined GTI used no oil at all between services , my current 2008 BWA with 20K on has used 750ml in the last 6 months!
-
Ive got a BWA engine since getting it ive done around 5k miles ( since December and it had a full service before I drove it away) and used just over a litre
it is known to drink 1l for every 1000km

My 08 GTi was serviced & oil changed in August, since then I've done 10,000 miles, the warning light has come on twice over that time and I've put 1.5 litres in to keep it happy.
I can a 1l castrol edge in the little cubby hole in the right side of the boot now, £20 a litre it's not a cheap oil!

Did you check your oil level straight after the service. It is not uncommon for dealers to not fill it up enough after an oil change, leaving it low straight away. It has happened to me. If this is the case then you haven't used as much as you think you have.

You're getting your Castrol from the wrong place! Try Euro car parts with a discount code, you'll get it much cheaper than that!
-
Both bottles I've bought from Halfords as its next door to my office and I needed it quick, £19.99, paying extra for the convenience!
I see Europarts is £17, where did you get your discount codes from?

Asda for 12 quid.. :happy2:

If the pcv is dodgy then it will use more oil than it should.

Hi
Can you tell us how many miles you have done in 2 months? Consumption is relative to mileage not time, so if you did 5000 miles in that time period then this may be fine.
It seems some peoples drink others don't, I had a 55 plate BWA that used close to 1l in around 1300 miles on Castrol Edge 5W40 and 1l in just under 2500 miles on Redline 5W40 (Better profile than Castrol BTW...but more pricey).
The oil consumption was the main reason I sold the car to trade, for me it was a real PITA and let the car down. I did nearly 30k in it and wished I had ditched it sooner.
VW and all manufacturers will covers themselves with the 1l in 600 miles BS but that was unacceptable for me. Sure a combustion engine will consume some oil but the levels quoted are ridiculous imo. It bothers some people and not others, it bothered me because it's a sign of inefficiency.
A main dealer wont look at the car unless it falls below those parameters.
I never found out where the oil was going, there was no visible signs in the exhaust gas either. Unless you're willing to have the engine and components stripped (lot's of £££) then you either keep topping it up or find another car.
I now have a MK6 and so far so good.

Can you post a link? I checked the Asda site & I can't find the Castrol Edge 5w30 1 litre anywhere.
-
My aax engine used a litre in first 10k and has never used a drop since and is now on 56k
-
I have never needed to 'top-up' the oil between services on my 57 plate ED30 (which I am obviously quite happy about )

They usually show you the current code on their homepage. It's changing quite often. Its usually worth up to 20 - 25% off.
