Thinking of swapping my GTi for a B7 Audi A4 diesel (saloon). Anyone had or drove one of these? Whats it like compared to the golf? Any recommendations on which engine to get, i was set on the 2.0 170BHP but a bit of research has scared me off them, a lot of people saying they have a lot of problems so will prob go with the 140 then stage 1 will get me to 180. The whole reason for the change is i will be doing a lot of driving over summer so need a diesel really, anyone know the real MPG i can expect?

My aunts got a B7 estate with 2.5 TDI V6 which is pretty good :) .. got the autobox and pretty smooth but not been mapped or anything. V strong and reliable engine though!

I had a BKD 140 for four years and was happy with it after a map, suffered from the usual traits in that time - turbo replaced before it popped, DMF/clutch went on schedule.
My mate got a B8 143CR Avant which after a remap and DPF delete goes very well, he gets about 46MPG on a brisk Newcastle-Aberdeen commute twice a month. If you can stretch to it, try get one of these engines instead of the PD140.

We and a good mate had this conversation recently (versus the B8 A4) and we decided now the B8 A4's have dropped under £10k for reasonable TDI examples, that it was worth spending a little more.
The TDI engines in the B7 had a few nasty faults, especially the 2.0 TDI 170PS pre-2007 which sounds like you've rightly done research on :scared:
The 2008 engines (including mine, which is a 2010 2.0 TDI 170ps in my A3) seem to be a big improvement over the old gen's :happy2: I'm 9 months in and very happy, the engines been nothing but solid.

The biggest problems with the 170 PPD was the injectors and DPF, injectors were solved by a recall and DPF can be removed for around £500.
Don't forget that many of the 140 were also PPD engines and have DPF and turbo issues.

Hmmmm decisions decisions! Would love a B8 but really cant stretch that far, only got up to £7000 to spend so will be a high mileage B7, maybe with buying high mileage it could of had the issues dealt with. Really had my heart set on a 170 version but I've read nothing but negative on them :(
Anyone know what the best audi forum for me to go on would be? None I've seen look half as decent or informative as this one!

Same engine range I know, but, would you get more Passat for your money (if they're on your preference list)?

As long as you had assurances around the engine you wanted (proof of warranty work/faulty components being replaced on the car), they could be an equally good buy?
I read some horror stories on the early 170's as Dave says, but had forgotten the early 140 TDI was DPF'ed too. Nowhere near as many cases around the forums with those (140hp) that I saw personally but that could be immaterial...
I guess a good warranty would also give you an extra edge here.

Not keen on the Passat tbh, I'm set on the Audi, i think the black S Line models look the business on some 18s or 19s  I thought the B7 140 TDI didn't have the DPF? Stupid things!!! I also don't understand why is costs so much to remove them? Might be sticking with the GTi and driving it like a granny to save fuel at this rate ha

my brother bought a B7 a4 2.0 tdi sve with 108k on the clock about 4 years ago, its now done 160k, done the DMF not long ago and turbo looks like its leaking oil but drives phenomenally well i'd say. quite comfortable and wonderful on the motorway. :happy2:

How much is a new DMF? What are the tell tale signs of it on its way out if i were to be test driving one what should i look out for? juddering?

Ive got a 55 plate A4 Avant 140 TDi We've done 88K of the 91k on the clock and haven't had any issues with it, just check the service history/work done as you would with any car purchase
