Title: RCD510 DAB into MK5
Post by: B1NCC 1.8T on May 11, 2013, 06:39:58 pm
I have a RCD510 DAB to go into my MK5 ED30

Wondering if anyone else has done this before, I've seen plenty normal ones fitted into MK5s
I am not too bothered about the DAB part working really.

I think I am correct in saying I will need to upgrade my gateway, due to the battery drain issue.
picture below shows the number on the gateway on my car.

I bought an RCD510 from a member on here and had no issues with my old Edition30, registered in September 2007. I think it may have had H rev. gateway as well.

It depends on the software version of your K gateway. I believe they changed manufacturer on this part number hence some have battery drain, some don't. L or above you're definitely good to go with.

I had a K and replaced it with an S just to be sure.

Is it possible to do a software upgrade on the gateways to solve the problem does anyone know instead of buying new one?

Get yourself a decent dab aerial and you won't regret it - quality of sound is far better than normal FM

I installed a RCD510 DAB in my 07 edition 30 without upgrading the gateway, never had the battery drain issue. I used a windscreen mounted aerial like this   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOLEADS-DAB-AA1-DAB-FILM-GLASS-MOUNT-PATCH-DAB-ANTENNA-AERIAL-SMA-CONNECTOR-/380597649044?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item589d633e94  (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOLEADS-DAB-AA1-DAB-FILM-GLASS-MOUNT-PATCH-DAB-ANTENNA-AERIAL-SMA-CONNECTOR-/380597649044?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item589d633e94) can't remember if that is the correct connector type.

Yep, fitted the RCD with a windscreen aerial to start with buy signal want the best so switched to proper roof mounted one with an extension cable to the headunit (I used a polo base and short whip aerial)

fitted this windscreen ariel in mine

not sure DAB is upto much in Essex, only really strong signal is around colchester, like fm, radio2 has the greatest range. The rcd510 will switch itself over to FM when it looses DAB, which is handy.

Just finished installing the RCD510 in mine.  DAB roof aerial;  Blaupunkt sharkfin/beesting combo. Amazed how quality has improved over FM. :happy2:

Thanks for all the help and links on this guys, especially the Ross tech link.

I looked into the gateway upgrade today, i can upgrade the software through the VW system
I searched the TPI number ( as mentioned on the ross tech site) on the VW system today and now have a action code to update the software instead of buying a new unit. The TPI is recommended for the fitting of a VW towbar , seems this can cause a battery drain as well.

Will give it a bash then test the car for battery drain after fitting the 510.
