I recently paid for a private registration that a VW dealership was selling. I've been told from a friend that I'll need to pay an additional fee for the transfer of the plate onto my vehicle - is this true?
Being the first time I've ever had such dealings, I don't have a clue. The dealership had the plate 'on retention' so said it would not take long at all to have the plate transferred to my car.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Cheers John

Yes there will be an £80 transfer fee mate. :happy2:

I'd also heard that since the dealership had bought the plate from the previous owner, they would have paid the £80 transfer fee and £25 for a 12 month retention certificate.. which would mean that I have nothing to pay?
:popcornsoda:
*EDIT*
I've just heard back from a chap I know who works in the motor industry, who tells me that the dealership will have paid this £105 total which includes the 80 quid transfer fee which applies to the next vehicle it will be transferred to. Sounds good to me! :drinking:

If it's on retention, it should be free to apply to your car. :happy2:

If you've got a local DVLA office near by (if they ain't been shut down yet), take the retention cert, mot cert, log book and tax disc in and the will give you a new MOT cert and tax disc there and then and send the log book off. All you have to do then is swap the plates on the car and phone the insurance to swap the plates with them (poss incurring an admin fee)

Out of interest what was the plate?
Never heard of VW selling a private place before

The plate belonged to one of their technicians, who bought the plate from him and put it on retention. It was Edinburgh VW FYI :happy2:

I just applied my private plate to my car. I put it on retention when I sold the Golf and paid £105 for the privilege. The costs breaks down to this:
£80 flat rate to put the plate onto a certificate (on retention)
+£25 for 1 year's retention, or
+£50 for 2 years, or
+£75 for 3 years.
By putting it on retention I got a certificate to prove the plate was mine, this also allows you (certificate/plate owner) or another person (nominee) to put the plate on another car.
As the £80 has got to be paid already, ask the VW technician for the certificate and get him to fill in (with you) the nominee section to allow you to put the plate on your car under your name. Once this happens, you now assume ownership (and responsibility) for the plate.
Your local DVLA office will be at the Gyle.
Out of interest, are you local to Edinburgh?

Edinburgh DVLA is pretty good.
Never had more than a 5 minute wait there!
