Well very suprisingly at my service and not they found that one of my rear springs had actually broken through at the bottom. So that led to changing both rear springs :fighting:

As one of my wheels is slightly buckled now also (balanced one thankfully) I'm blaming the awful road near me which is peppered with potholes, some rather deep ones too. Try as I might you can't always avoid them all!
Before I raise a claim against the council I thought I would see if many people had experienced similar spring damage? There is clearly some wear due to water and or dirt sitting around the bottom of the spring but I was shocked at the damage (car is 55 plate)

I've had both rear springs go on my old Golf
nice getting the call from VW, your rear spring has gone and needs to be replaced :fighting:
was one of the things that started the time to change the car thoughts, pretty sure the next service it would have been the front springs that had gone
-
Depends on age really.. I had a snapped spring, not as bad as you, mine even passed an MOT, it was only when I fitted Sportline Springs (around 18 months ago, before I changed to coilovers) that I noticed the top of one had gone.
I'd just say a normal age related wear thing.. your dampers would likely go before the springs if it were pot holes, or at least not be far behind!

Mines snapped around 85K & then they were replaced for Eibach pros

Happened on my last mk5, also on my Altea too.
On the Golf just a tip had snapped off, on the Altea there was no doubt it had gone...

I think if you have original springs on a 55 plate you've had a good innings with them, as unfortunate as it may be.

I've been told its one of the mk5/6 chassis weak points. We just did an 8000 mile mk6 with a snapped rear spring!!
-
Its down to poorly sourced metal to keep production costs down.

Sounds like it is just one of those things then :sad1:

Yep. At my last service my Indy said my 05's rear springs were rusted and would probably snap before long. Apparently not uncommon according to them.
