Title: MFSW - Connectors - Do i need anything else?
Post by: Deako on August 05, 2009, 03:57:44 pm
Just got my MFSW controls through from ebay. Not bad for £54 inc P&P.

Can anyone tell me whether i need anything else? I have the steering wheel controls, the red ribbon connections, and a small TRW box that the red ribbons go into.

Also, i have noticed that on the steering wheel controls there are some small 3 pin connects in the white blocks. What are these for?

Hi mate so you got them through, the 3 pin conectors should be for your paddle shift wiring one in each side of the box. But you shouldnt need that box you got with the new buttons cos you'll already have one in to control your paddle shifts.

Cool, im sure it will make more sense once i get the bag off.

Is there anything i need to be careful of when removing the airbag? Should i disconnect the battery first?

defo disconnect the negative cable on the battery mate,  nothing to watch for all will be self explanitary when you get the air bag off...best get a small mirror and place it behind the steering wheel.

Behind each spoke on the wheel you'll see the clip you need to undo to the get the bag off.

Cheers Darren. Will post some pics once i have swapped the inserts. Also need to find some suitable small bolts to hold them in place.

The inserts you have in already should have the small screws in so all you need to do is take the bag off and unscrew the inserts and replace with your new buttons,  not sure they will work with out coding but hope for you they are plug and play.

Cheers

Awesome, i hadnt read your last post. Assumed the inserts would just be pop off/on. Well happy when i saw they had the screws already.

Steering wheel controls are now fitted and working. The only thing that doesnt work is the menu button, however, i can still get to the menu by pressing and holding one of the up/down arrows as per the stalk. Happy days!!!

Quick pic taken on the iPhone after installation and uploaded directly to Photobucket!!

Just assume it needs coding properly to make all the buttons work as they should. Happy that thats not needed desperately though, and it functions perfectly fine as it is.

I wished I had specced this as an option but i just took the highline instead, is this a simple thing to retro fit if you just have the h/line? and arent dsg'd.
is there and ebay seller flogging them or was it just a one of sale?

You'll need an proper MFSW Keith it was just the DSG wheel had the set up that fortunatley the buttons could be retrofitted afterwards,  The standard S/wheel can not be retro fitted with the buttons.  But the good thing is the standard gti wheel still gets a good price on ebay roughly £100+ and you may pick a good gti/r32 mfsw up for around £150+ nothing else is needed.

Would a mod be able to move this to a technical section please? Might help someone in the future more if its in the right section. Cheers.

I think it's in the coding for the steering controller.  Can't remember it exactly but one will make the buttons on the end of a left stalk work and the other makes the steering wheel button work.

The VCDS coding window will tell you.

So let me get this............

If i find a MFSW, i can retro fit it, and with some VAGCOM Godcoding to the SW controller it will work?
