Wow....

I got the Norfolkline Dover to Dunkerque ferry last time around for £25 return and paid 35 euros a night for a really nice hotel with brekkie - what does the other £200 get you?

Was about to say the same. When i went in 2008 the whole trip cost my fiancee and i £600 including eating at the Pistenklause every night, and a trip back via Holland.

Okay, you guys who've done it cheaper, no-one is forcing you to come on this trip. So in your opinions you either think it's too expensive or you don't want to spend the money.

:rolleye:

Come on RR, you're an intelligent chap.

It's like paying Thomas Cook £1000 for a week's package holiday with a welcome party and a rep to look after you, and then being in the room next door to someone who paid £50 for an Easyjet flight and £200 for the hotel.

You've got to justify that extra £???'s true value, I couldn't.

It needs REAL value.

A free tuition session, discounted laps, free ADAC breakdown cover - something to justify that £200 per person.

Hell, I'll book you all into a hotel 10 minutes from the 'Ring, co-ordinate which crossings you're all on, give you detailed maps and pick up/food points and book you into any resaurant you like on any evening...

And I'll do all that for free.

An S4 would cost you an arm and a leg in petrol to and from The Ring.

IIRC, there was a nice Mk2 GTI on a trailer pulled by a S4 Avant at The Ring last time.

Ringworld, the massive bit they're building on the side of the F1 track - loads of bars/foody places/hotel rooms/gay clubs..

Still won't beat shovelling a Pinoccio's pizza down your trap whilst getting a lapdance in Adenau, apparently.

Are you going to take the Porky, Joe? They are common as two-a-penny out there. Take a spare splitter (or two) if you take the GTI

my dad would never let me take that HAHA.

Hmmmm,

Big turbo, big intercooler and a crisp October morning. I think I'd cr*p myself first time round :rolleye:

....No, you'd be fine. Just respect every corner on every lap and keep within you and your car's limitations. Hang on! I'm talking to Hurdy here!

Oh and make way for faster cars - It's not a race. I know you'll love it!

I'm sure I don't know what you mean *whistles* :innocent:

E30 325is Touring FTW.... can be had for buttons compared to a saloon, will pull an MX5 no problem and epic fun round the 'Ring.

....I used to have an E30 straight-six 'coupe' - Brilliant car! Brilliant for driving but virtually a 2-seater with a tiny boot.

A mate of mine had the M version (he runs a Porsche Turbo now)

Be careful on 888s in October Hurdy, it's very damp and cold in the mornings up there and the greasy crap from the trees never seems to dry out.

I'll be meeting up with this lot of hooligans anyway when out there. If you're preferring to go on the trip version I am, then let me know and I'll get your name added so you don't have to register on yet another forum! Otherwise, add your name to the list here if you are serious about going.

I've stayed at the hotel before, good value but not really close to any of the bars or restaurants.  Been past the Linder and didn't fancy staying there either - bit to commercialised for my liking.

I also asked about hiring one of those Clios from Hotel Norschliefe - he wants a 5000EUR deposit UPFRONT!!!!

I just had a look at the Nurburgring Experience website - they arrange car hire as well, have emailed them to see what the costs are etc.

I've been on an organised trip before (albeit with Circuit Days) and it was great fun but cost a whopping £900 per car and all they did was book the ferry and accommodation. I wish I'd known about the Nurburgring Experience back then as looking at their site they seem to have most bases covered when it comes to back up and contacts.  They even promise to get you back to the UK if you have a problem.  Seems like a good way of doing things to me as I'd like the security of someone looking after me when I'm there.

Will ask a couple of other mates with Golfs to see if they are up for this trip and report back :)

....Yes, The N'ring Experience version will probably cost something in the region of a couple of hundred ££ more than this forum's trip (if that, but I can't be arsed to work it out) but, there are certain benefits. If you happen to decide to come on this NExperience version I'll make sure you get to meet these forum hooligans guys anyway.

Either way, we'll all meet up at various stages and have a great time. I think I'll have the best of both worlds

I've had a reply back from Dino at Nurburgring Experience, seems like a nice chap, also sent me a list of their rental cars - I'm quite tempted to hire one of their Clio 197s out there and they dont require a 5k deposit upfront - unlike Hotel Nordschleifes cars!

If I do this I'll do it the proper way and go with Nurburgring Experience as I like the idea of being with an organised group!  He has even promised me some (hot) sighting laps in his M3 which I'm looking forward to  :congrats:

There will also be a photographer with his group the entire weekend. Only cost for that is £30 for a DVD of ALL the pictures taken - bonus!

Just waiting on my mates to confirm their time off and will confirm asap.

....Yes indeed it is. Or rather, it's not a R32OC trip but a Nurburgring Experience trip initially offered to that forum.

This whole DIY trip on this forum only started because I brought the R32OC trip to people's attention here, thinking they may like to join it. Without my initial post most people on this forum probably wouldn't be going at all.

So far i'm being refered to Very Cherry mate with the fridge. Far enough

One question, and everyone going to grumble. Insurance.

My insurance won't cover me for driving round the ring, names Nurburgring in the policy as a no no. What companies will insure you? I know you can get "Track insurance " at the ring, but is that the same thing?

any facts would be useful.

....Re Ring insurance, Phew! where to begin?

It's very, very tricky. On one hand the German authorities class it as a public toll road (although it's got Armco, red & white track kerbs, and is one-way in a loop) but UK insurers insist it's a track, as indeed it once was and still is when closed to the public for specific race/trackday events.

Even UK insurers who might normally insure you for trackdays, won't cover you on The Ring.

It is world famous for being a difficult circuit and does attract all sorts of drivers, some of whom, shall we say, think they are far better drivers than they actually are and also drive at the limits of their car. Consequently there are statistically a lot of incidents and insurers see a higher risk of their your money.

AFAIK, if you hire a 'Ring prepared car out there, insurance comes included but the whole package isn't cheap.

One of the advantages of going on a trip such as with The Nurburgring Experience (as Hurdy and myself are) is the help infrastructure if things do go pear-shaped. It is more expensive than this forum's DIY trip though.

I'm afraid that most people take the risk but it can be extremely heavy. Not only for the costs of Armco at £30(?) a metre but all the other costs due to the circuit being closed etc etc etc etc and etc. Furthermore, under German law, someone can take you to the cleaners - If you are judged to cause an expensive Porsche or Ferrari to crash, you may find yourself facing personal injury claims and loss of private property claims. The other driver was wearing a £5k watch and it got smashed - Tough titty on you!

You might say you could be up sh!t creek without a paddle.

But...............

I should just add, that at the risk of being called an old git etc, unless you really are very track experienced, don't go for beating lap times (either yours or anyone else's) and don't race other cars. Treat every single bend on every single lap with respect and drive within both your own limits and your car's limits.

I may sound like boring Captain Sensible but you can still have a great time and the experience of a lifetime by going.

Do a 'sight' lap first - That's as passenger in a car preferably similar to your own. It gives you a soft intro to how the circuit is. No amount of Playstation etc laps can be relied on. If you are coming with us, either DIY or Experience, one of us will be happy to give you a passenger ride (I know you wouldn't want to risk one with your mate VC  )

....I hope I haven't put you off driving your own car at The Ring!

The Ring track hire cars will cost you in the region of £400 IIRC - I looked it up in June before my first trip because I was, like you, very concerned about insurance. I decided that I wasn't even going to drive on the Nordschleife because of lack of insurance but after a sight lap I felt confident enough and the temptation was too great.

Another option is to pay a specialist Nordschleife instructor £100 for a one-to-one hour (again an option with The Nurburgring Experience) but just start off by getting a passenger ride and see how you feel - You'll be fine - Just treat it like a fast one-way B-road you've never driven before but which has fast bikes and Porsches suddenly appearing in your rear view mirrors.

You'll enjoy it, otherwise you wouldn't be going.

Just one word to remember: Respect.

Not put me off, but would have liked all the facts before i signed up.

Hiring a car is the only way i'll be going round, can't aford to talk the risk. And by the sound of it nobody else is going to have insurance either, so think i'll keep my car well out of it.

I think you'll find that it's only the Britischers who most of whom have very limited insurance cover, if at all, for The Ring. It can get mighty technical in that your insurance company may be forced to pay out under EU law but then will come after you personally afterwards.

Please hear what others in addition to myself have to say about Ring insurance.

for the guys who've been there before this is irrelevant, but if your new to the ring this might help

the german insurance companies see the nurburgring as a public toll road and therefore cover them.

its really not that bad on there. ive done cake loadsa laps now, and have only come off once, but i was really pushing it at that point.
A few pointers for those who have not been before

As you approach a corner, not during, check your mirrors for bikers and quicker cars, you'll be suprised how cars sneak up without you realising it,

if a car is coming up behind you to overtake always indicate right(which would be the slow lane on a public road) and if they hit you, they are then liable.

when you come onto the last straight where you can see the exit, dont hammer it down there if you have standard brakes and brake fluid, cos when you brake hard at the bottom, and end up in the queue, you will have a very spongy pedal and not much breaking power at all, and they take forever to cool down.

Also after your lap dont pull into the carpark and leave your car, take it for a slow drive to cool the engine down, and more importantly the brakes. I always come out the track turn right at the round about take the frst left down the road, through the tunnel, and head back in past the petrol station.

Most importantly, when you park up after a lap, do not use your handbrake as the heat on the pads and discs can warp your brake discs. I park it in gear, handbrake off, bonnet up, to help with cooling.

And watch out for bikes as alot of them are absolute idiots and seem to have no fear for their life

I think you'll find that it's only the Britischers who most of whom have very limited insurance cover, if at all, for The Ring.

And that's the biggest problem.

I'm going to get some quotes for insurance which will cover  the ring Vs hiring a car to go round, and see what the final cost is going to be, i'll take it from there.

the rent for ring cars seem very good. nearly all the ones I have seen have had roll cages and R888 tyres, with uprated pads etc. they are capable of lap after lap. i believe the excess is supposably quite alot though if you do crash

Been skimming the lounge wall with plaster actually, although with the F1 on  :innocent:

akira you can always co-pilot with me then hire? Iirc didn't cam hire a ring car ( mk5 Gti from a company in London?) maybe sling him an email? He went halves with someone, left their car in London then played in the hire car when he went.... Just a thought

I'm gunna follow this insurance info carefully. Having never done a real circuit before only sprints, this will be a baptism of fire to pop my track cherry

....My 'track' cherry got popped on the Nordschleife too. It's uniquely and famously different from other tracks and one or two friends questioned my wisdom in popping my cherry on it. However, first do a 'sight' lap (passenger in another R32 - Nathan?) and it'll help you. Just give it respect and don't get over confident and that goes for every corner on every lap you ever do.

You'll love it! :happy2: 8) :happy2:

....Best, IMO, to hire a Ring prepared car out there - They're specifically prepared and maintained for the Nordschleife.

they better than nothing joe.

there the same ones me and tom used on road trip 2007. they were ok, but we found their limits pretty quick.

we bought some great ones for 2008 but there from america, and are a lot stronger and using them in europe requires a license. oops!

anyways..they were great obviously anywhere in the world, but they work on different frequencies that the normal ones you'd find in the UK.

and as ive only got two, it would be pretty useless bringing them too

It's so much easier with radios to organise pit stops etc. But we'll need some patience with the radios, nothing more annoying that one person shouting down the radio cos they think it will be clearer. Then 8 people going "what" haha

Exactly! What me and tom used to do on road trip is put our hazards on for a few flashes, wait a few seconds then start talking. That gives you time to turn the music down and listen out for a transmission. Sounds a little sad but it's such a lifesaver to stop those "I didn't hear any of that" posts. And it works magic!

This is the trouble with being my own boss, as a designer I have to do the design work as it's why clients come to me, if I subcontracted the work out or employed someone they wouldn't get what they pay me for, and the clients are too valueable for me to pass on them

I promise, if I could I genuinely would, I've been so excited about my first ever circuit, and combined with the lads road trip mischiefs that are bound to happen....  :sad1:

I'm gutted, would love to hook up, just can't this time, next trip though!

....I know exactly what you mean - When you work for yourself you do so 24/7 and you never know when the next job will come along and must do it when you've got it - I did it for nearly 25 years. No regrets at all though - Had some really long breaks and could afford all sorts of holidays etc.

Clients come to you for your talents and not an employee's.

You gotta do The Ring another time though, design-dude! And there will be other times - It's an(other) addiction.

well i'm back from my first ever trip to the Ring!

Got the card...did 9 laps (including the free one courtesy of Redline mag  :happy2:).... had a great time!

even had dins at Pistenklause last night.

lots of crashes tho with some rather exotic machinery. Wasn't that busy tho according to the others..so we all did plenty of lappage.

Enjoy the trip next month guys.

Will upload some pics later this week.

That's one of the great things about using the Chunnel - They are extremely flexible and always very helpful. My daughter forgot her passport on one trip and they were there ready to help the situation. Fortunately she persuaded a French customs guy to let her through.

Also, it's far quicker and easier than the boats - Why do 'drivers' use the boats? The boats are horrid imo - just floating plastic bars and loads of tourists and screaming kids.

But apart from that, the Chunnel is so much better (IMO).

I can appreciate where your comin from with the boat vs train scenario robin, but I'll tell you why I prefer them.

From my house to Dover is a good 3.5 hour, which is fine to do in one hit. After that you want a bit of a mental break. Normally I'm driving to Switzerland or mid France off the boat. So the ferry gives me a good 1.5 hours break to get some rest and let my brain come back to work.

So in that sense -
my house to Davos(switzerland) = do able via rest on ferry.
My house to davos = not doable if using the train with out a huge break

I guess I just like to be efficient with my breaks whilst on the road!

I can appreciate all I just said goes out of the window if you live an hour or so away from folkstone/Dover.

I totally appreciate what you're saying, Jay - I was forgetting that I normally stay not far from Folkestone the night before. However, I always manage to drive back home in one hit - Usually around 750 miles - Something else kicks in, but helped by the faster European roads.

Did you Northern boys not think of doing the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam??

What it costs extra in booking, you save on fuel, hotel at Dover and fatigue. Something to think about for next time maybe.

Same here.

Picking up the TAROX race pads on Monday and corner weighting Wednesday. Just wish I'd got the service parts for the DSG otherwise the Quaife would have gone on too.

There were many funny moments on that trip but non more funnier than that when i think back.  :notworthy:

It went something like.

Sharp right Robin,  right right, thats just an escape road. Then robin just turns right in time and starts accelerating again then 50 yards later starts braking and saying are we still on the track i think we have come off.   :driver: :rolleye:

My Aruba trip was booked first or i would be getting ready with you guys now. I am completely gutted that they clashed and i am unable to go.  :sad1:

All i can say to all of you that are going is just please respect the track at all times, and dont think you know whats round the corner because you have seen it on a play station. It will be impossible to just take it easy as once you get on their most plans go out the window.
Please be safe, and bring your cars back in one piece. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2Fbiddend.gif&hash=1dd1185c6b80e29c9ec2cc4c6c7f3eb5fbcc240c)

And remember those who are unable to attend, and bring back lots of pics for us.  :drinking:

^^^^ Good advice!

The Caribbean is fantastic - Another world! Easier to visit Nurburgring again than the Caribbean. Have a great chilled time - Lay back in the sun sipping a cocktail and possibly Led Zep on the headphones - It's a trip, man!

WEAR A HAT!! - Honestly, dude, it'll help protect you and shade your eyes - That sun is hotter than you think when a Trade Wind is chilling you.

EDIT: Another tip is if you get a bit sore (from the sun!) find an Aloha plant and cut off a section and keep it in the fridge. Just rub the green jelly insides of it on your skin where it's burnt. A native lady taught me that when I was out there - It works! Check the contents list on any decent sun protection bottle and you'll read Aloha.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd say hello... I'm new to the forum but will be riding up with Jay and Tom on the 'Ring trip this weekend.

I'm a regular on www.babybmw.net (I drive a 1 series) but thought I'd sign up here and say hi before meeting a few of you this weekend.

I absolutely can't wait for this (as I'm sure you lot can't either)! Couldn't agree more about the messages to stay safe and bring the cars back in one piece... that won't stop some hardcore driving and serious fun though!

Tim

PS. I have 30-odd pages of thread chat to catch up on for this trip!!

no definately not, but looking at the speed of the car and degree of corner, id say with the advances in suspension, chassis and tyre technology, youd get a modern hot hatch around that.

Subject to a clean dry track obviously!

Clean dry track? At the 'Ring?!  :signLOL:

I reckon the rental Kia Pro C'eed 1.4 I last took around the 'Ring might have just barely made that.

I gave it back to the Hertz guy in Frankfurt stinking of clutch and brake and wheezing slightly... He sez to me "car was alright?" (from a distance), I sez "better than expected", toss him the keys and head to my flight :P Good thing he didn't inspect it before I took off!

Ok you lucky gits, gutted I have to miss this but could you guys staying out there do me a favour and check out your accommodation for wheelchair access and disabled facilities.

I have been to places where a piece of wood resting against a step was their meaning of 'fully wheelchair friendly'  :signLOL:

Also if their is somewhere to leave the chair in the pit lane? Its not great to have it ratttling around on the back seat!

Have a good trip, keep on the black stuff and shinney side up,   :happy2:

Neil

As far as I know Steve he has a split hose and has had to take the car straight into VWR, hence the reason he hasn't brought his car home with him!  :happy2:

As Greenouse says my car is at VWR having a couple of things sorted, the simple one of them being a split hose that triggered an engine management light on the way back yesterday.

If that is the simple one, what's the complicated one?  :surprised:
