Title: Most Comfortable Drivers Car ?
Post by: garrardrj on May 21, 2013, 04:58:13 pm
So as i approach old age  :rolleye:

May have to buy an additional car soon to run my parents around in and i can't buy some old Bus !

Whats the most comfortable car you have driven but still retains a bit refinement for a comfortable ride with my parents in the car ?

What are those options like that alter the suspension settings , is there much between the sport and comfort settings ?

Im going to say a Jag too. What's the budget?

Never been in one of them but my old man has a Jaguar XF Sportbrake for tripping backwards and forwards between here and Spain and LORDY its comfortable on a long trip especially for such a big, fugly car. Got a wee bit of grunt too. If that thing is comfy, all Jags must be.

Any big Volvo, but never on sports suspension.

I wouldn't have said any of the above we're good drivers cars or have I misunderstood the question? If I haven't then I would say BMW but I'm slightly biased, although in terms of big, refined and as rewarding as a car that size can be they are the best, unless you go big money.

How mobile are they? Something MPVish can sometimes make more sense because they're not struggling in and out of a car.

Volvo seats are amazing, anything plush and French is generally like wafting along in an armchair too.

Well they are pretty mobile and what i don't really want to do is to have one car for carting them around and another for me . It needs to have a "Character" too so boring stuff is not me , needs to look good aswell . Budget perhaps up to £30k , one that has different suspension settings . Also our roads around here are useless and potholed everywhere and very uneven . How good a drive would a X3 or X5 Diesel be ?

I have never driven a new Jag , they are a bit boring looking though

For 30K i would be looking at a BMW 5 series.

Something like this would be good fun, i'd imagine

I have to agree with the other 2 on here a 5 series. I t may sound biased as i have just picked my new one up, but having previously owned allsorts of cars including RRS, jags, mercedes, etc... the new 5 is just superb. It ticks every box, comfort is great, so adjustable, styling, performance, reliability and build quality is excellent! You can get a really good one for £30k. If you look on here in random chat youll see the one ive just got. :happy2:

If your going 5 (or 3) series BMW, just make sure to get SE spec as M Sport the ride is a tad hard (Fine for us I would say but your parents might not appreciate feeling every pothole via their bottoms).

With your budget you might stretch to the new 3 series touring 330D or Saloon, quick (0-60 in 5.6s) refined, low car tax band (135gm Band E) and economical (combined mpg 55.4) and a good drivers car (Sorted chassis).

I am biased tho having a 330D myself  :happy2:

30k is a nice budget to work with - My Bro has the new 530d as a company car, with variable suspension - I think BMW really have moved the goal posts with that 5 series, it's an amazing piece of machinery.

I couldn't prise the F10 530d loaner I had for a week off the missus, she loved it. She refused to drive the old 135i.

Deffo a car for everything with the adaptive suspension box ticked.

5 Series 530/535 Diesel Estate seems to be an option

What is the Audi S4 estate like as far as ride quality ? My experience of Audi's is too harsh a ride , haven't driven a recent Newish car though.

My dad's F10 5 series M sport does not ride hard at all. And it has standard suspension.

If your carrying passengers a 3 series is useless - you'd be better off with a Golf. Very little leg room in the back and not masses amount of space in the front either - that's the reason my dad got rid of his.....

Mine carried me and 3 mates to Austria and back in total comfort.

Not sure who your carrying but I am 6'3" and when I set my front seat I can get in the back behind my seat with inches to spare. Agreed the boot is not that big but its still bigger than a Golf (My golf clubs and trolley fitting in with seats up attest to that!), the golf had to have all the long sticks taken out of bag for that to happen.

Even driving 500 miles non stiop before fuel stop, I did not have any aches or pains or numb bum, simply put the 330D touring is a mile muncher, and it will sit all day long at 150mph on the autobahns (altho we were limited to 110mph because of the roofbox  )

Left St Ives (Cornwall) and drove to Norfolk (400 miles), stayed there 2 days then drove to Saddleworth (165 miles) all on one tank of fuel.

Last weekend it carried me and 2 mates and our 3 sets of Golf clubs to a club away match with ease, would have been a tight squeeze with 4 lads/clubs in tho!

I believe the E91 boot is 35L bigger than the golf (Before you consider the under floor storage?) the new 3 series is bigger still and the diff between the 3 and 5 series is only around 50L I believe?

I was referring to the 3 Series for hard ride, I tested several 330D/335D M sports before going for the SE based on comfort/spec, I have not tested the new 5 series yet (altho my dad has and he liked it)
