Title: Help my Drone/noise.
Post by: Jason_E on May 26, 2013, 11:13:20 am
Okay, so I think I posted in here when I first got the car about this noise. Apparently, it's pretty common on MK5 GTI's and GT Tdis.

Anyway, here's what I've done since then, and the noise remains.

- New tyres on the rear, Goodyear Eagle F1's as recommended by various MK5 GTI Forums for noise, handling, and wear.
- New rear discs and pads.
- Checked the wheels for any play that would suggest a failed wheel bearing, nothing. Wheels feel solid as do all the bushes as far as I can tell!

Here is a bad video I took on my private runway last night. If I veer to the right, the noise momentarily stops. Now Im not sure if this is weight being taken off the rear, right hand wheel? That would narrow down my search. I've also heard it can be something to do with the shocks?

You can hear the noise, almost sounds like I have a big bore exhaust. When you hear the noise dip, its because im tugging the wheel to the right.

Any help really appreciated :)

Have you inspected the tyres for uneven wear?

As above mate, two new eagle f1s on the rear. The ones that were on there (contis) didn't even have any visible uneven wear, which my tyre fitter was shocked at!

I had exactly the same drone when I bought my car earlier this year and it turned out to be a worn wheel bearing, so I'd recommend checking again.

Like you, I jacked each wheel up in turn and felt for play and there wasn't any.... but, if you spin the wheel while it's jacked you might hear the bearings grumbling while it's spinning. Mine was the right rear, but it should be pretty obvious which one it is compared to the others.

I had the bearing replaced and the noise was gone Happy days.

Worth a try anyway. :happy2:

I may just have to bite the bullet and replace the one I think it is. Thanks!

I had exactly the same when I first got my GTI. LOOOOOOOONG boring story, but eventually got the dealer to change the drive shaft coupling on the side that made the noise. Quiet!
Actually they changed the other side first as they couldn't tell where the noise was coming from. My 12 yr old daughter could tell from the back seat !!!!!
