Following on from the build and eventual sale of my little Derv monster... - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,64568.0.html
I should probably actually update with a new thread for the new car.
I picked up a 2006 GTI 10 days ago. Spec list
DSG with paddles
Reflex Silver
85k
Cambelt and WP changed with FSH.
Sunroof
Xenons
Puddle Lights
Leccy folding mirrors
A few dinks and dents here and there but overall seems really good condition. Wheels are corroded to hell however I'm quite happy with it.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fad165%2Fsbbbb%2FIMG_0433_zpsa809c951.jpg&hash=f16a375909033403474162323cb3c277bfaabb4b)
Firstly I got the Diverter Valve changed as I was getting a p0299 underboost code and the car felt really flat.
I had a RevB in there before.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg845%2F9158%2Fimg2065e.jpg&hash=8fff64e22096474f4f949f5c2979902f332f6c56)
Stuck a RevG in and much, much better.
Gave it a quick detail, some new wipers, and an iPod kit (not happy with the iPod kit at all, it doesn't change tracks from the HU/wheel controls, although it's supposed to, and constantly charges the iPod even when the car is off, ergo drains the battery if you leave it plugged in).

Had a big box of parts come through the first week of ownership...

Contained within:
Pressed plates, number plate surrounds, Mk5.5 rear boot handle (3d to replace the horrible corroded one), Newsouth Boost Gauge, LED number plate lights, etc.

I have a new set of wheels which are undergoing a refurbishment process.. the lips I will be polishing myself, (I did the one in the picture) and the faces will be getting sprayed a very special colour indeed. :popcornsoda:

They will not be going on until we have more lows though which should hopefully be by the end of the month.
I had a misfire problem last week, but it's been fine since. However it is booked in at VW for new coil packs under the recall first thing tomorrow morning.
At the weekend it is getting a DSG oil and filter change.
I performed a DSG adaption last week and it was much better than before (cheers to Rich for pointing out the process).

Hi Jamie
Looks nice
I see it is an import because it has electric seats
check that it has an alarm
-
Looks good - looking forward to seeing the future progress :happy2:
-
cheers Ed and Gareth. Lots of exciting things coming in the very near future!
For now.. I have an Up, and I love it.

Blimey I thought you'd changed the display for a sec...I was thinking you of all people changing to a display that doesn't go over 120 mph. hmm. Then noticed the radio missing to the left and then read the post. :ashamed: oppps.
Enjoy it!! :rolleye:
-
Health to enjoy Jay, in the nicest and fastest colour too :happy2:
-
Looks a nice example.
Electric seats. I'm "well-jel" lol

Haha yeah we couldn't have that!!! I've not gone that fast in this car yet. Still letting it "bed in" for me haha.
Although the cluster was really cool!

whats this ? and what does it do to the DSG gearbox
nice golf with good extras
what did u pay £6000 / 7000
what plans are next
-
It resets the parameters of the DSG gearbox, similar to the throttlebody adaption, just with the gearbox.
I'd rather not say exactly what I paid but it was around that region, yes.
Not really saying too much on plans as things evolve, but wheels, extra lows, some bodywork, and we'll see what else happens
Got the boost gauge fitted with the help of my mate Jase.
T-Piece fitted
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg826%2F5971%2Fimg2121z.jpg&hash=54b75ef67708e72fdb516e5b20a626cb98d3d04e)
Many hours of fun in routing the boost tubing... very neatly done on the top by Jason. It's the same method as on my TDI - We used the bonnet release gromet. I don't think this is the "recommended" method but it worked fine for 18 months on my TDI
(USA owners sites run it through a hole in the firewall which is on the passenger side here in the UK, which means dissembling half the dashboard - No thanks)
OEM tape removed, wires stripped and splicing into the light switch for the illumination
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg441%2F2791%2Fimg2122kl.jpg&hash=10734e937645149088a29eaf3e3a44a3e1837297)
(it's the grey wire on the loom going to the headlight plug if anyone is interested)
And then some OEM tape re-applied to seal the connections, everything was routed correctly, boost gauge pod was put into position.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg855.imageshack.us%2Fimg855%2F4042%2Fimg2123f.jpg&hash=438c2370c505ee13663c39b99628699c62856a15)
And the finished results:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg543.imageshack.us%2Fimg543%2F4289%2Fimg2127f.jpg&hash=a7954d57ba6eba700bede0beee4581113c09113b)
We also did an oil and filter change, as although it was done about 8k ago, I wanted to have some peace of mind.
We also flushed the coolant as the coolant that was in it was green (BMW independant did the cambelt and water pump so I guess that's all they had lying around) - So we put some lovely VW stuff in it.
It burped itself through on the short drive home, with a low coolant warning after the self-bleed - Topped up with more G12 and happy days!
Also yesterday we did the DSG oil and filter change, as I was not sure if it had been changed previously - It had luckily, so no worries there.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F8955%2Fphotofqi.jpg&hash=8d3a816a2c2aa783add0bb54c8b5784989aa599b)
Yesterday I dropped the wheel faces off for painting, should have those back next week.
Doing the pre-cat delete in the week!
-
Can't wait to see all parts on the car, btw where did you order the plates from?.
I would recommend the Xcar link system for an ipod adapter kit, thats what ive got and i have no problems at all.
-
Pre-cat delete is quite a good mod (considering price) for bringing the EGT's down. That brick wall next to the turbo really does heat things up! Makes the exhaust a little more 'throaty' too.

Yeah I think it's a case of I just wanted to put the iPod kit in on the cheap and now I will have to buy twice! :ashamed:

Has a nice burble to it now... speaking of which.............

Since I am supposedly some sort of expert on engine tuning   with my infinite knowledge we cracked on with this yesterday.
My mate Jason, the doctor for this surgery - getting stuck on what shall be known between us as the see-you-next-tuesday bolt - but I'll just gloss over that..

Nice little increase in exhaust note. I will need to sort out a decat pipe and a nice cat-back, in the future, before the map, so I can go straight to stage 2. I want to go for a full 3" system, with some noise, but not deafening. I really like the refinement on the long drivers back from my London jaunts.
Definitely feels more responsive and quick to boost now the pre-cats are gone, good worthwhile mod!
In addition to that we got onto polishing my lips with the help of my buddy Stu. Stu is kind of doing it for me in his spare time but when I get the chance I pop over to help. He's just better at it than I am and enjoys it. Really appreciate his help.
It's really hard work but I'm very excited to see the end results.
Quick pic after tonights antics.

Great update Jay, can't wait to get my DV and pre cat done.
Any tips for bashing it out? Heard just try not to damage the sensor by it. Chisel and hammer job?

Yeah, just take the lambda out before you start hitting things. Exactly! Chisel and hammer, probably took... 5 minutes to get it all out? It was really crumbley. Kind of like a flake!
-
Looking good jay, can't wait to see those wheels on there!

Cheers Will!
I got the faces back from paint today... a special House of Kolor colour that I spent 3 days trying to find.
In the end really really happy with the colour, in the sun there's such an awesome metallic flake and the way it just pops is amazing. Slight orange peel due to the powdercoat, but for a powdercoat, the finish is really good. I am looking into wet sanding them before we stick them together.
Looking forward to building them up.
-
Very nice colour choice mate. Looking forward to seeing on the car :popcornsoda:

Thanks people
I have dropped them off with a local contact for wet sanding today.
Over the last few days I've been getting intermittent low oil pressure warnings on my dash. It would come on for a few seconds and then go out again, or it would come on after high revs/load situations. I panicked and haven't driven it.
After doing some research I found it could be the oil pick up pipe (thanks to Niki at R-tech for the thread he made which alerted me to the problem).
Had to buy the pick up pipe, oil and what not on my credit card :sad1: :sad1: but I was brought a Halfords professional tool kit which was great..
Car jacked up and all secured on axle stands with the jack on the suspension arm for extra safety. Ben looking a bit confused :signLOL:
Before Ben arrived I had drained all of the oil already.
Getting the sump off is not actually too difficult. Around 20 10mm bolts, with 3 larger bolts going through the bell housing into the sump. Three of the 10mm bolts were a pain in the arse due to them being angled. You either need a severely wobbly extension or you can use a 5mm ball headed allen key and a spanner, which is what we did.
Then you have 2 bolts holding the turbo oil pipe on to the back of the sump. There is a metal gasket on this. As long as you don't bend it or crack it you can re-use it.
When everything is removed you scratch your head wondering why the sump is still magically staying on.. There's a tab on the passengers side which is just enough room to get a screw driver in, wiggle it about (use the shaft if you can not the head to avoid damaging the mating surfaces) and it will drop. It's not heavy but don't let it fall down.
And here is what you see afterwards..
You can see my pick up is well and truly clogged.
The sump itself
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg10%2F3804%2Fbx8f.jpg&hash=96c566c08d66a0fb84aae1a8d286afc8149b61d0)
This is on a car with 86k and that had been previously on long-life oil services, between 12 and 15k. Not too bad but obviously bad enough.
After a thorough clean with brake cleaner, plenty of neat BH Surfex and warm water....much better!!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg837.imageshack.us%2Fimg837%2F290%2Fy083.jpg&hash=6bb01cbd02a0565115638a16a229cf62aa4422e9)
So we cleaned the mating surface of any remaining sealant/gasket and put in the new oil pickup
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg13%2F5438%2F33yv.jpg&hash=5bf8737c47bd85bb966425bc5f8088a65ebb147c)
Ben has a much steadier hand than me so he did the application of the sealant. There is an official VW part for this but it's just a high temperature gasket sealant, after doing some research I found that Loctite 5920 would be perfectly good. So that's what we used.
A very thin bean is required, 2-4mm, as applied in the picture. Any more than that and it could get sucked up into the oil pick up, pump, or into the turbo! :scared:
Oil filter replaced with a genuine VW one, complete with 5.3 litres of Mobil 1 5w/40, gave a completed job well done.
Car started, sounded much better, idling happier. Gentle warm up drive followed by some blats up and down a dual carriageway revealed no problems! :happy2:
Going to run this oil and filter till end of July and then swap it out (around 1200 miles) and then keep it on 8-10k oil changes.

Excellent Job Jay and good write up as well.Glad it was a easy fix
-
Glad you found this out sooner rather than later ..ive never been a fan of longlife service plan
sent using my own fingers

Looks a very nice base mate, OEM xenons too
Good work also, like the attention to detail
-
Those alloys look f'in smart Jay, was waiting for you to put a build thread on edition but found it on here first! Looking forward to seeing it with the wheels on, spec looks good on this GTi too. Guessing you will be getting silly amount of power from this, still amazed how you got so much power + torque from that TDi!
-
I've been really busy with work and the gym lately so sorry for the delay in replying.
Excellent Job Jay and good write up as well.Glad it was a easy fix
Thanks Andy, yeah I'm chuffed too :happy2:
Glad you found this out sooner rather than later ..ive never been a fan of longlife service plan
Yeah that is true, and glad it happened while I was near home rather than at a meet or something. I dislike the longlife service plan, I do at the worst every 10k, but unfortunately previous owners don't always have the same level of OCD
Looks a very nice base mate, OEM xenons too
Good work also, like the attention to detail
Thanks mate. On the subject of attention to detail it needs some serious bodywork, I need new skirts both sides, all the rubstrips respraying, bonnet and bumper, both wings, and a new rear valance... so that will start end of July until the start of winter.

Hey mate, thanks. Yeah they look even better now! (see the post below) - I will put a thread up on Edition, but it will be after GTI International. I'm not going to go much after stage 2 level of tune. I'd be happy with around 260bhp and 280-300lb ft. I find myself driving this a lot more economically on a daily basis to make up the huge loss of MPG around town.
I really miss my old car. A mate of mine tagged me in a picture of it, the new owner has taken it to a race track for a show and it was parked up in the paddock. It looks as good as when I sold it so happy to know at least he's looking after it.

The lips are finished.
Three are pretty good. One unfortunately still has pitting that we cannot remove. I polished 1 3/4 of them and my mate did the rest. We went down to 180 grit on the pitted one and it would not remove them so have to look into getting them all professionally mirror polished over the winter. They will do for this summer anyway.
I want to get some new bolts, I have a set of 8/10 condition bolts to rebuild them with already but they are polished/stainless and I want something a little more special. We'll have to see how money is.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7402%2F9130238472_c066fd6abf_b.jpg&hash=e32f866fe8efd2ec69f2fe3d18fae9be82e75717)
And now onto the faces..
I wanted the durability of a powdercoat finish, I find wetspray is too easily chipped or marked.
While I do detailing and can do paint correction quite happily I've never done wet sanding
So a guy local to me offered to take a look and this is the result... Before left, after right.
The guy who did it is called Nick and he's a top bloke, give his page a visit, he is on Facebook @Detail My Car. I would recommend his services and his integrity.
and his website is here: http://www.detailmycar.co.uk/

I picked the faces up this morning from Nick@Detail My Car. Top lad really nice guy as mentioned.
Got the barrels, some threadlock and some tools and started to put them all together.
So we started here.

Waiting for my longer wheel bolts to arrive from DPM (latest on Wednesday) and I'm having the tyres fitted on Monday, so we should be good to go in time for Inters
I put all the metal spigots in as well today so we will be ready to bolt on!
-
Yay wheels!
Looking awesome in that last pic, the lips have come up lush, gotta be chuffed with them! :happy2:
-
Yeah! They're alright for a self-done jobby. I'd say 7.5 out of 10, I might get them chrome plated next season :happy2:
That's wicked! We've had summer for the next 5 years though :( !
Sorry I thought I replied yesterday!
Don't curse it!! Weather has been lovely lately all things considered! I need the next week and at least until Inters to be nice! :signLOL:
-
Strong work jay
Love the wheels
Once again thanks for all ur help the other day

Cheers Ricky.
No worries happy to help.

-
Looking great Jay. Can't wait to see fitted.
How comes went for 35s? Just bit more clearance?
Si
-
Exactly that. :)
The Sessantas also run quite "wide" anyway so going for a 35 profile wouldn't cause an issue.
I didn't want "massive" stretch but needed a bit of extra space. I'll be looking into rolling the arches but I'm getting two new front wings from VW under warranty at the end of the month, possibly along with a bonnet and bumper respray.
So I would get them rolled afterwards with the fresh paint.
-
Cool.
Are the arches bad? How have you found VW with the claim? I had some on the Mk4 but they said was paint defect not corrosion so never paid out.
Si
-
Ehm, they're bad enough for me to notice, or if you are under the car, you can see where the paint has chipped off.
I found VW a pain (again) - I went through the process on my old car, and this one (so twice now) and eventually managed to get them to cop up to 100%.
I had to get a case reference from VW main office, I also wrote an email to the global CEO and the MD of VW UK - I have not heard anything back from either e-mail but have since had the 100% "goodwill contribution" come through.
Officially it's 70% from VW and 30% from my local dealer but I'll take it any way it comes.
-
Fancy a purple RS4 interior to match your wheels? :jumpmove:
-
Would love one but don't have the money at the moment.
Because of this..
It's very long as we did a full write up which I won't post here as it's about 50 pictures but you can read it here (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/520487/3617015.aspx#3617015)..
I'll just leave this here.

Just love how low it sits tis all!

Haha it sits lovely I think. I could get it lower at the back with some tubular suspension arms but not worth it IMHO, I like the stance, I hate when cars reverse rake when aired out.

Haha fair enough mate! Whatever route you choose :) I realised in my old car you can't really go for a hard drive anymore. Not with the roads how they are and other people. I'd rather chill and cruise now :notworthy:

Is your offside front tyre on the wrong way round jay?
-
They on are correctly. :happy2:
-
Ooops, meant offside... Ill edit my OP. It looks like its on backwards?
-
They are both on correctly. They are not directional which is why they look funny, as the tread patters suggests that the are directional.
-
Yeah.. tyres can be confusing.
Just spent the weekend camping with the UKmkivs lot had a fantastic weekend.
Sure there are loads of pics up and coming from that but been having more niggly issues with it. Only got this one for now which was on the Friday evening before most of the people turned up!!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fu679%2FAshOHFK%2Fimage_zps07b3e55d.jpg&hash=f8d480aa8dabfee9bfb6d4cb26e99b0ce88e61bc)
Have a rattlesnake under the bonnet any time I let off the throttle it sounds like something is going to fall off in my engine bay. Spent hours checking heat shields and everything and no luck at all.
Still have the massive pulling to the left which makes it very unnerving to drive but 99.9% sure that's the LCA bushes which are still sat in my room waiting to be fitted (I'd do it myself but I need a hydraulic press to push the original console bushes out to insert the TT Mk2 ones)
Once that's done we'll go from there.
In the mean time I've had the car back from paint. Had issues with panel alignment which I decided to sort of fix myself to stop it from ruining the new arches, the quality of the paint is spot on went around it at night with a sun-gun and crystal clear swirl free finish which I'm so happy about. Just need to machine the rest of the car now :signLOL:
Still got to change my cam follower... we'll go from there.
Had an EML light on which was the secondary air injection thingy... cleared the fault and not been back on since. Stupid thing.
Just want to race car it really now. Just waiting on people to buy my tings!!
-
Car is staying. So is the air. And so are the wheels. I had that "click" when cleaning the wheels funnily enough and now I love it. :jumpmove:
Following the purchase of a DAS6 PRO I've been able to get back into the detailing side of things again. I just do friends and familys cars but expanding out to forum members etc.
Recently I completed 2 stage machine polish and headlight restoration on my friends Audi S3 as a thankyou for polishing my lips when I first put the wheels together. Over 20 hours of work and really pleased how it came out.

I decided to actually get on with mine instead of doing everyone elses!!
As the weather was on-off decent this afternoon and tomorrow will be good I thought I'd use these two days to get started. If I got the car to a point where I could just wipe away the surface dust in the morning and start maching that would be best so that's what I did.
The car is always kept clean so no need for a heavy decon wash. Broke out my favorite shampoo Ammo NYC Foam which I had imported from the USA (as you cannot buy it in the UK currently). It's so slip-slidey and bubbly as well (bubbles don't always mean good lubricity) and smells like bubblegum mixed with fairly liquid.
It's a very gentle wax safe shampoo [y]
After rinsing the car down I got cracking with the wash!
Depending on the soiling of the car I use a 2BM but most times I can get away with the one bucket. Using a 2BM on a relatively clean car is just a waste of time despite what some others may say. They absolutely have their place but here it wasn't necessary
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1271583_200731766762164_824746137_o.jpg)
After washing it was rinsed down again and the windows were dried at this point.
Got cracking with the claying
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/1237367_200739576761383_72511152_o.jpg)
As this clay requires only water to be used I left the paint wet, got my double action trigger sprayer, added water and a drop of fairy liquid and got claying.
While I did clay it when I first got it, it was a bit of a rush job. Also having the car go through the bodyshop some overspray was present especially on the freshly painted panels. As the paints used are waterbased there was no need to worry about damaging the fresh paint anyway but I was extra gentle on these panels out of caution.
You can see some tar contamination here. On my drive to work (and subsequently home and to get lunch...) they had been doing road works which I can only imagine caused it.
It then started to rain so I rinsed the car off and left it. No point drying it if it's just going to get wet again. I went to make a Bacon Sandwich and Ben and his missus popped over and we went to play with his RC car! Many rolling overs and doughnuts later
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/558038_200757316759609_296254611_n.jpg)
we went home and I got back on with the car.
Gave it another rinse down and then to help remove the clay residue I went around the car firing the hose into the face of the mitt and going across the paintwork. Basically wherever the mitt goes there is constant flow of water so plenty of lubrication.
following this I dried the car with a microfibre towel as usual. normally (and perfectly natural to) you miss a bit so when you dry it you end up with dirty patches but I think for the first time ever it's pretty spotless!
You can see it's starting to get dark, it's around 7pm and I'm still in summer mode so think there's plenty of light left..
After drying we are left with the car as is.. still comes up nicely to be fair.
So I buzz out my scene tape (regular low-tack masking tape works just as well it's just not blue) and get cracking.
If you don't do this sort of thing you don't realise how truly time consuming it is taping up a car. I'm going to do the paint first and then the rear taillights so I'll have to re-tape those after the paint is sorted. Took me probably an hour and a half to tape it all up, but then I wasn't really rushing.
Ran out of light so had to do things by feel LOL
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1146812_200800310088643_1390578139_o.jpg)

Still got the rear bumper and skirts to tape off but I really couldn't be arsed to do anymore tonight.
Just looking forward to tomorrow really early start, Bacon for brekkie and then a quick wipe down and then get set up to get the swirls out.
As it's hard enough to get photos of swirls on silver I did what I could.
The door trim cover thing.

Nice to see Adam and Nick for a little bit :drinking:
Silver as you can imagine is such a pain to photograph in a unit with halogen lights and sun guns let alone outside, in the sun with a phone light.
I'm still waiting on a Brinkmann Dual Xenon to come back in stock from Polished Bliss. [:(]
Got the best I could with some help from the sun when it came out.

On Stu's to be fair if I had time I would have gone to a more aggressive combo (I used Orange pad with SF4000 on his) so I went straight to FG400 on an orange pad, gave great results!

My rear bumper is buggered having a little chip off on the lip near the boot and all of these scuffs and scratches on the flat part above the number plate.
As it's plastic I went quite aggressive, thinking if I burnt through it's only plastic, and would get resprayed anyway... gave it a couple of passes with FG400 on the trusty orange hexlogic

Well happy with that one!!
You remember the side trims which I photographed last night? Just incase you missed it..

These things are ARSEHOLES because they come up so nicely but they get water stained so flipping easily.
Anyway the polishing was all done at this point. Gave the car a rinse down and the weird (but effective) "spray the hose into the mitt" wash method followed by a wipe up of the remainder of the tape residue and I was finished.
By now it was 8pm and I needed to get some protection on there. Luckily I had just enough Colinite 476s to get round the car twice, with enough to re-wax the wheels and lips.
Oh also, the roof scuff as well.. again incase you forgot..

I'm not actually happy with how the car came out. It's much better than before yes, miles better infact. I'm not embarrassed when it's under lights now. But for some reason, some panels on this car had INCREDIBLY HARD paint. I know VAGs often have some difficult paint but I hit the roof TWICE with Megs MF, with more pressure than you should be using (finished each pass with less pressure to reduce hologramming) and while it's better yes there are still swirls on it.
My PDG - Paint Depth Gauge - is not here yet (around the 8th of September it's due). I had quickly gone over the car at VW with theirs so I had a rough idea of the depth, but without having it handy to check the removal rates I didn't want to go much further. When I get that I can go much more in depth and I'm sure my mate would accompany me to his unit which has much better lighting, and lots of trucks!!!
Anyway about 13-14 hours spent on this in total, not too bad at all really.
-
Some great effort there ...great results

Thanks bud. Yeah spent about, well, 13-15 hours. I lost count really. Was from 2pm-10pm on and off on Sunday and 8am to 10pm on the Monday with a couple of little breaks.
Yesterday we went to change the LCA bushes front and rear and do the cam follower. I had attempted to do this myself before however as mine has the 2 metal pipes, I only found out I didn't have the M8 multispline after I had taken off every other bolt and the main metal connection..
First of all we changed the cam follower which I cannot tell was changed (not mentioned in the history) and it was in very good condition I'd say for a near 90k car.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg856.imageshack.us%2Fimg856%2F6514%2Fxqrc.jpg&hash=ba036e9ad6dd6d7a43bfce60d49c82bb3599754c)
We went to get the bushes out and one bolt was being very awkward.
In the end it snapped. :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:
We got the console off only to find that it was not a genuine console and the TT Mk2 bush did not fit into it. So bear that in mind by buying cheap aftermarket bits.. OE bushes WILL NOT FIT.
In the end I have to leave my car with my friend for him to get the snapped bolt out the subframe.
Whoever fitted them did not apply any copper grease so the steel bolt corroded in the ally housing.
Luckily the other side had a genuine console housing, I suspect the bushes on the right hand side were replaced in the past.. not concerned as these cars as we know eat the bushes for breakfast.
Anyway a new console bush from VW (Genuine) and the TT Mk2 bushes are pressed in with no problems.
All going back together and my mate text me it's done.
Thanks to Moores Motors again love my man Jamie for sorting me out :ashamed:

Been busy with some shows lately.
Players, Edition obviously, camping holiday to the Isle of Weight, this sunday we're going to be at Westside
Not been the best few days unfortunately.
I was in a pretty serious car accident.
Driving down a main A-road a woman was tailgaiting us the whole way. So close we could not see her headlights!!! As we approached a roundabout leading onto a dual carriadgeway she backed off and the next thing I know, we've facing the wrong way and her car is deep within some foliage. The road was a 50mph limit at the time, I reckon she hit us at at least 50, more like 60. We got span 180 and ended up on a grassy verge.. it all seemed so slow motion at the time.. Everyone says that but you never really realise it until it happens.
The car with the boot open (Merc) was an off duty police office who was actually the most helpful of them all... on-duty coppers didn't really seem bothered at all. They reluctantly took my name and address and a brief statement. The paramedic got more information than the police did from me!!!
The car on the left with the 2 guys who stopped to help, about 20 feet infront of them is the womans car (who hit us) in the bush (not in that picture), then you can our car sat the wrong way on the exit of the roundabout lol

Nursing a lot of neck pain. On some pretty strong painkillers which is kind of trippy but not doing much for the pain unfortunately. Sicky feeling not helping.
.... thankfully it was not in my car. In my mates Corsa VXR. Not nice for him, he bought it brand new, 62 plate, 12k on the clock. Rear floor plan all pushed up, carpet looked like it was pitching a tent in the boot - rear 3/4 all damaged and scuffed, drivers door, front wing/bumper, nearside wheels, almost certainly a write off. :(
A couple of photos to lift the mood from WED meet on Saturday where I limped to the day after the crash (which happened Friday night around 10;30). Not a good idea the pain from driving was agony.

I did notice some sanding marks in the bonnet from the respray job.
I must have missed them when I was looking over the car. Following a falling out with the bodyshop due to their piss poor customer service and one member of staffs particularly terrible attitude, yes Shaun I'm talking to you - (Ridgeway Paint and Body Center in Newbury) That's another thing I'm going to have to tackle myself. We'll see if we can machine it out. If not I'll speak to a buddy who does professional detailing (the kind chap who did my whiles) who can wet sand (I'm not comfortable wet sanding my car lol)
But need to wait till I'm better for that.
Hope all is well with everyone anyway. If you're at Westside come say hi.

Not good about the accident.
Re the sanding marks. Buy a m tract pad. Use it wet on the areas effected. Then a rotary and 3m fast cut and they will come right out.

Thanks Jake.
Yeah I will give it a try when I have bought the stuff and can actually do machine work (back making it impossible!)

Had a few things added.. mainly I picked up my winter wheels on Friday! Which were nicely boxed for me. They are not perfect and I'm contemplating refurbing them before fitting but I'll see how money is.
Going to have some dents removed over the coming weeks as well.
Few bits of bodywork going in for paint when they arrive. Hopefully to get fitted before show and glow..
Yesterday we had westside which was nice to hang out with all my friends. Very chilled out environment and even better coming away with runner up in the Mk5 class :popcornsoda: :pomppomp:
Well chuffed with that and completely unexpected :happy2:

I'm not bothered as it's not my car LOL. Sounds harsh right?
Doing detailing I have an eye for things like that, I'd HOPE most people wouldn't spot it but nevertheless knowing it's there annoys me. :indifferent:

How much did that cost to do?

A good friend of mine did it, Jairm.
He offers it as a service along side Audio work.

Curious on the material  Looks good... Want my things done in alcantara ... over the vinyl wrap I did myself,
There is more than one type of alcantara material you can buy. This is not as "plush" as interior alcantara. However the problem is, it becomes a pain when you re-fit things because the thicker alcantara does not fit properly and you end up with bubbles where an edge has come away or anything.
if you wanted Jairm to do this his rates are very fair, especially if you take the bits off and just drop them with him for a week or so.
We removed them on Thursday and he fitted them back for me while I was away in Scotland on work over the weekend.
nice flowers
They are nice aren't they? Everyone likes flowers.
Looking forward to seeing the rest, wish I had the money lol

Yeah you wouldn't want to know what I've spent on this car so far, more than I spent on the actual car itself.

More pictures of the trimming as requested. Everything is tight around all the dials and switches and what not. If it does not appear so in the photos it's because they were taken on a potato.

Defo on the red hazard switch. :happy2:
I'm not sure what I'm doing Audio based. I half want an MFD2 as I prefer the look of them weirdly , I would need to change the can gateway for the battery drain as well, it adds up. I'm having some Audio work done December/January anyway so I'll look into it then.
Looks good enough to stroke !
It's like having a permanent teddybear in the car. Very soft.

No mate they are very easy.
I did put a mini guide together on the first page of the thread when I fitted it. (I even told you what wire you needed to splice )

I am seriously considering it but £1800 is not a small chunk of money to spend. I'm due about 25 hours extra pay this month (I get paid a week today) and will calculate it then.
I also have to check with insurers about prices for 320bhp limit. I do things properly :drinking:
-
That's an awesome price fitted.
For me personally, I'd still be looking at what it would cost to change for an Eddy, and would the insurance play more favourbaly for you with a Stage 1/2 Ed over Turbo upgrade GTI plus Stage 1/2?
At the usual price of the K04 upgrade I'd favour an exchange for an Ed.30, but £1.8k fitted and mapped... hmmm... shirley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5t5_O8hdA&t=0m11s) that's the one to go for? . :jumpmove:
-
Why would I want to change to an Edition 30?
When I already have done so much work to my car. Plus anyone can buy a car , to make one is much more dedication :driver:
If I don't go for this swap I would go Stage 2 on my hardware and then put a CDL lump in in the future
-
Ed30 lump would be cheaper.... As it doesn't have the audi/cdl scene tax!
-
I'm 26, 8yncd, I pay £350 with everything declared. Soon not that bad.
-
Just read this whole thread sat on my *** at work, brilliant work mate your car looks awesome :happy2:

Fair play, this car is just ridiculous.
The wheels are perfect, the colour is unreal, and that stance
Seriously good work :notworthy:

Yeah that is true.
I'm 26, 8yncd, I pay £350 with everything declared. Soon not that bad.
I'm 22 with 1 claim and 3yncd. £1080. That's for all the mods but nothing on the power front.
Just read this whole thread sat on my *** at work, brilliant work mate your car looks awesome :happy2:
Thank you mate. Have a lot more to do , to make it even better over winter ready for 2014 show season.
Fair play, this car is just ridiculous.
The wheels are perfect, the colour is unreal, and that stance
Seriously good work :notworthy:
Thanks bud appreciate the kind wheels.
I am a fan of the wheels much rarer IMO than the Rotiform stuff you get these days.. just not as flash and as in your face which I like :rolleye:
Need 10mm spacers for the rear and some more camber to get it spot on to be honest. I had only just put air on the car and wanted to get used to that and run the wheels through the summer to work things out before I made plans. :happy2:

Jay where did you get those done mate as my little bro wants his fabia VRS alloys done in that colour. would you mind PM'ing me how much they cost too?
-
Hi mate
They are done from Silver Wheels in Bournemouth. The paint is special order..
I spent a very long time (3 days of driving around various paint shops and checking through hundreds of paint cards) finding out what colour this was.
It's the same colour on my AMG Aero 2 summer wheels.
They cost £360 to be done in that colour and that was discounted price, as I have used them before.
-
Worst picture ever but here we go.. ;)

Joking aside. Colour is very nice.

Can I ask what tyres and size you are using for winter? Thanks
-
Winters look spot on buddy. Love the fact its five door :happy2:

Maybe one day. They're not just winters but sort of every day wheels. Consider them dailys
Needs more lows
Joking aside. Colour is very nice.
:happy2: Cheers Jake. Looking forward to having you sort out the Mercs. I'm going to split them over the next few weeks most likely.

215/40 fronts

Winters look spot on buddy. Love the fact its five door :happy2:
Everyone mods 3 doors! I value my practicality thanks very much! Besides the doors on a 3 door are too long it's odd. :surprised:
Killed the winter scene jay. Looks top draw
Thank you very much bud
Looks good dude! They look bigger than 17"
Yeah they do.. it's odd. My A3 wheels on my old TDI looked like 18s as well.
Don't understand why some people are like "need 18s or bigger.."
Looks great on those winters Jay. Colour is spot on too. :happy2:
Thanks H, yeah it's not bad! Same colour as the Mercs but different design so well chuffed how they turned out.
Looks spot on dude :happy2:
Thanks :drinking:
Over winter we have the following to sort out
Paintwork - Needs some respray work and colour coding done and some dents taken out. Votex splitter needs to go on still and I need to get some sanding marks from the VW bodyshop out of the bonnet as well so need to Trizact that
Brakes - Due to the Mercs dish and design I can't upgrade the brakes in terms of size but I am going to put some new discs and uprated pads on along with having the calipers painted
Interior - A retrim is on the cards, I'm pretty sure I've finalised the design as well, need to sort out some seats first...
Engine work - Going to go Stage 2 most likely, want a Turbo back exhaust and intake.. but power is not my priority at the moment. I don't really drive it that hard anyway.
Wheels - Going to have the lips professionally polished or chrome dipped. The rest of the barrel will be getting powdercoated. The faces are going off to be sandblasted and then will be resprayed in the same colour. I want extra lacquer on them to allow me to machine polish them up again throughout the course of the year. When I get them back they will be sealed with a ceramic sealant.
We're aiming to have it all sorted by the start of the show season 2014 that being UD14..
-
Sounds like a plan!
-
like the wheels! :happy2:
-
Cheers Joe

Cheers everyone.
Jonny - Ahaha that was my best effort at parking as well! :ashamed:
Joe - Yeah, the material arrived but it's not the right stuff for the radio surround, as it was the right kind of material for retrimming. it can't be guaranteed it's the right material until it arrives and it can be checked :( Trying to source another suitable material :happy2: do it once, do it properly, all that sort of stuff.

Car looks lovely fella :happy2:

Yes mate drop me a text or a PM on here as I got banned from Edition :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:
Yes Footwell lights standard on GTI and other cars from SE upwards I believe - Not sure about sport though. My old TDI had them
-
So, why you been removed from edition mate? ha ha

Well first chance I've had to read your thread xjay - what can I say other than you seemed to of enjoyed all the hard-work,whilst having fun under taking it, which isn't detectable in many other threads.
You seemed to have endless energy for the challenges you presented yourself with, whilst never leaving out your attention too detail.
If I was younger I would be aspiring to copy your build thread! :congrats:

yes it's all been a challenge really that's what building a car is about. nothing's ever easy and you just have to stand up and deal with it and enjoy everything, even if things break haha
So, why you been removed from edition mate? ha ha
The mods just banned me because they didn't like me.
Doesn't matter to me really. It was just banter.
In a photoshop thread I did something which is apparently NFSW.. drew with MS paint a really crap and really tiny, crap comedy penis on a picture of Michelle Keegan or whatever her name is and Cheryl Cole.
Got these through today only took 4 weeks!!!

followed you from Thatcham into town the other day (In the mrs car). She couldn't understand the concept of air haha!
picked up mine today. interior is up to standards, but the outside is horrific. flat spots, evil bird mess marks, the lot! needs some serious machine work!!
-
Haha mate, hardly anyone does. Outside of people who are in the "scene". :sad1: :sad1:
If you need some detailing work give me a shout, I don't charge much ;)
I can do machine correction as well but only really in the warmer months as I don't have a unit or otherwise decent indoor place to do it.. I'm looking at getting one though. Hopefully will have a garage soon as I'm trying to buy a house as well :popcornsoda:
Read my detailing guide as well which should help you get started!
If you're local man feel free to add me on FB we can meet up sometime and say hi.
-
Got all the kit (Das-6) just need to use it really. But don't have a huge clue as to what I'm doing of I'm honest!
Maybe worth saving that til warmer weather.
-
Happy to teach you :)
Yeah better off waiting until warmer weather unless you have somewhere like a garage to do it.
-
Sadly not dude. We move to maidenhead end of the month. Have a driveway though, so that's a bonus.
Gonna steam clean the engine back tomorrow and a half arsed clean so it's respectable for now.
Still need to come see you for the running light mod tho. Couldn't get it working earlier
-
Ah fair enough buddy! Better than nothing :)
Ah no? Yeah the running light is really easy man let me know when you're about we can meet up I'll sort it out ;)
In other news... Votex splitter I bought MONTHS ago finally got painted. Isn't 100% as it was painted by a baboon previously and without completely stripping EVERYTHING and starting from primer then it wouldn't be perfect, we bashed this out in a day and I'm pretty chuffed. So excited to get it all fitted which I'll do in the morning to allow a bit more time for the lacquer to fully harden.

Had to mix up a completely one off custom purple, as my buddy who does this spraying (He's a smart repairer by trade bloody good one too) could not get house of kolor stuff. We used Porsche Amethyst Metallic as a base and added more silver and pearl and it's a pretty bang on match to the House of Kolor shade ;)

Next will be some more paintwork, I need a rear end respray really, bootlid, bumper along with the rest of the colour coding.
-
Amazing car. Good work. :happy2:
-
Looks good! I've been thinking about spraying me red gti lipstick trim, or buying a second one to change out. But can't seem to find them anywhere for sale. Do I have to resort to the stealers?
Tidies up the look of the car, especially if you have a colour theme, black and gold in my case, I just think the red messes with the look a bit. Maybe just me! :signLOL:
-
Jay
Good work looks bad ass.
:)
-
Have to say your front end was always missing this! Perfect!

I've only ever seen 2 seperate from the grill before and they were being sold by the same person on here, so maybe a trip to TPS or main dealer will get you one. I'm not sure if you can buy them seperate but it's worth a try.
Also, they are relatively easy to remove if you did want to paint your origanal one :drinking:
-
Yeah I saw those too but missed them. Never seen any others since. I'll investigate at the dealers!
Could always plasti dip it actually, and if it's not brilliant looking paint it instead
-
Oh my  that looks seriously nice with the votex splitter.
I persuaded myself I didn't want one, but after seeing how much it changes your car I'm Gonna have to do mine now.

It can always be repainted red later.

Thanks Ricky :) Been after it for so long, slowly she's coming together now bodywork wise.
Have to say your front end was always missing this! Perfect!
Indeed it has! Been well overdue. Sat in my room for 4months taking up space.. figured it was time to sort it out :)

I waited a year to find one though, buying new seemed pointless.
-
Oh wow! Looks awesome mate!
Cannot wait to get a golf now after seeing yours.
-
Is it as easy as just spray painting it with some gloss black or am I going to need the real deal and a gun and proper paint. It's only small after all!
-
Cheers Joshy :innocent:

Easy as that obviously after prepping it correctly.. You can paint anything with anything my man.

Cool, thanks mate!
-
Just read through your whole build thread mate lovely car you have I hope to get mine that clean soon :happy2:

Thanks mate. A lot left to go, in my eyes it's far from mint.
I am looking for the end plates on the Votex splitter.. basically it's known as a "fitting kit" that goes on the very end of it and up into the wheel arch. I need this part to complete the look as it looks, to me, unfinished without it. So I'm prepared to pay strong wedge for this small part.. Number 2 in the picture below.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F10%2F05%2F6enaty2e.jpg&hash=a5dfab8294080f9f1babaab79e04cfec8ed58db7)
Anyway, moving on from that..
Not sure what I've mentioned of this before but I've been gathering parts for an Audio install.. as one of my closer friends has his own small audio company.
I didn't want to splash loads of cash but at the same time wanted something half decent so I gathered some components..
Got a Rockford Fosgate 10 inch shallow mount sub, a very decent shallow mount sub this cost me £85 brand new - http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/r2sd2-10
Got a basic but working Edge amp for £30 from a mate.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg854.imageshack.us%2Fimg854%2F6840%2Faujv.jpg&hash=5e4f8bbf96a428a47e4e35d17a2f4ea0d735baca)
Bought a Pioneer AVH-2500BT with iPod/iPhone cable for £100!!! - (apparently it's an app radio so can probably work it with my Galaxy S4 as well..). Got this from a really spot on guy local to me for £100 with the Microphone cable and as mentioned the iPod cable, the loom was hard wired so a teeny bit more awkward to wire up to my car, but Jairm is gonna sort this out for me without botching my loom, and also the wheel control box (unfortunately this was £45).
I also have 2 rolls of 20cm by 10m sound deadening as we're going to sound deaden both our cars - so more than enough.
Jairm's been working away like a beaver on my sub box.. he does not want me to put pictures up of this yet but trust me on this it's a really quality product, gobsmacked at the quality of it. It's all made of wood, no fibreglass, we've tried a few configurations, open port, closed port etc, and we've stuck with a closed port as the airspace is VERY tight.
It's all trimmed up already and the fit is completely spot on and works well with the air build, as he's a very handy trimmer if you've seen my interior work. We'll also be re-trimming my top section of the air ride to a more factory looking carpet.
Just as an idea as to what we're doing...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.srqcustoms.com%2FImages%2FMKV%2FMKV_33.JPG&hash=1d5057000fee08ec5ad5cef9edae55a35ec7d51c)
However I was not happy with the large stick out as it did not look OEM so this is completely flush! We're going to fit everything on Sunday, after the Paul Walker Memorial Day I managed to get tickets to.. so will update with plenty of pictures then.
-
Lovely stuff! I was going to sort my horrific audio out this month but decided an alarm was a better choice but seeing how fairly cost effective it is instead of going for a ""package"" which invariably would be more than I want and could cost more!
And you going to this paul walker meet at Santa Pod? I had an argument on the phone with them so I can't go!! Not that I got a ticket! Think quite a few didn't! :(
-
Haha things always cost more mate.
Sorry I've been very busy lately but yes I was at Paul Walker on Saturday, I managed to get a couple of tickets so went with a friend.
It was a really good day actually nice to see things which weren't just VWs sort of thing.
Anyway today I was up at 9am (after sleeping at 2, I felt hideous) and working flat out till 10:30 this evening, with the help of Jairm - Jairm88 on here, of JW Audio Solutions, we managed to sort out my audio finally. We also did some other retrimming work.
Jairm was awesome as per usual and his quality were again top notch, really happy with everything.
I have gotten loads of pictures of the day but they're on my Camera and it may be a few days before I can get them off. I have a teaser picture here.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-prn2%2F1506655_265263133642360_1891533237_n.jpg&hash=8d951bf049ccbd92129e24a76c6ef9288aef32b5)

Yes bruv
Looking good.
-
love this mate, top work! :happy2: loving the purple too! was considering a similar colour for mine for the new year.
-
Thank you mate I do try. Really like your car as well, it looks awesome, has great presence.
Ricky, thanks man. We need to catch up soon. Homegrown starting soon hopefully.
Anyway... audio build... done...
I'm seriously running out of hours in the day lately. It makes me sad.
Anyway as mentioned, cracking early start at 9:30am... straight on with the work.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2Ft31%2F1540317_265631586938848_927252598_o.jpg&hash=fc6d7d39922248fbf2635927418d1697addbf1d5)
Arrived and got cracking pretty quickly with the new head unit... whipped the old one out as you can see here..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2Ft31%2F1523965_265631893605484_1209245773_o.jpg&hash=225a711888983d672b4785e6db27f82d45dec5ea)
The previous owner of the head unit had hard wired it into his caddy. i didn't want to butcher the audio loom for my car, Jairm made a new loom for me to plug and play, really nicely down it's so neat, you could pass it off as factory.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn2%2F1399229_265631943605479_407515426_o.jpg&hash=214fe84d95c2ad332197288d2ff268f0934182d9)
It won't quite squeeze in the hole!!

The sub...

We stripped half of the boot build out. We were going to re-trim it anyway, as the carpet was peeling slightly in places (my fault for putting some velcro things down which pulled it up) and it would not match with the subwoofer carpet.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2Ft31%2F1502775_265632376938769_1119455110_o.jpg&hash=4e55c35629464faf2fe1de97d571c6d9ea183d4d)
Running the power wires and fuses etc.

The old part of the build
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F1556476_265633496938657_2104320855_o.jpg&hash=74f2a7e46b467b6008f1947fdcdaa2c4da8d7964)
And then removed, this took ages lol!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F1535374_265633596938647_585068853_n.jpg&hash=7a0227b2446c51b08ddc25ee9ef48e638de47503)
Making an earth point.. another hole in my boot
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F887323_265633646938642_1768164311_o.jpg&hash=5904702be072408532bcf61e70a874a63d106324)
Needed a way to secure the subwoofer in the boot.. there's an un-used hole that we was died and a nut tapped in so we could screw into and secure.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F841099_265633690271971_1204557335_o.jpg&hash=2ba3ff08000a381cf088e21ad48a87b6baa81a60)
Then the annoying part, stripping the door cards off...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-frc3%2Ft31%2F1498807_265633890271951_717545632_o.jpg&hash=83a4ee85b1d0611cb5b398e7bc285d87284f0851)
To fit sound deadening.. this has worked a treat, except there's one little rattle coming from the front passenger door which I need to sort out, aside from that no other rattles.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-frc3%2Ft31%2F1093868_265634050271935_477441780_o.jpg&hash=b981e35ab6ae75552944eca113c9d683b92530b9)
The back of the sub box that Jairm made for me, he has done this all himself and I know he's spent a LOT of time on it.. what a playa.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash3%2Ft31%2F1522443_265634116938595_143880296_o.jpg&hash=f9e27b4d87c065128a5c9b33d1ddb2057417138e)
Darkness fell quickly but we continued working.. plenty of things left to do.. including sound deaden this side of the car as well..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash3%2F1039767_265634270271913_630302412_o.jpg&hash=62e8f6df5443d42ffca7fbc5986a1696f0808e4e)
Changed the LED in the drivers door (that signifies the alarm etc) to a purple one.. (it's a bit blue to be honest )
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-prn2%2F1556476_265634436938563_434869452_o.jpg&hash=df04f5c7ac1a9b815cdc6044170ba0d2d39a77ec)
The evening drew further on.. and the temperatures plummeted, but we kept working
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash4%2Ft31%2F1606376_265634560271884_1470531357_o.jpg&hash=27f1ce130c73f8a7a8a5a890f91f038caf2c674f)
Got onto retrimming the rear build, we also retrimmed the small hatch opening, and I had broken one of the supports for the hatch (by leaning on it, I'm fat what do you expect) and so we re-did those with two wooden lips to support the block on...which were carpetted also.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash3%2F1531732_265634506938556_1616078968_o.jpg&hash=6d99536bed53671e3792668a50cfb3d07c5509e2)
And the finished pics..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-frc3%2Ft31%2F1499405_265634866938520_654587931_o.jpg&hash=402fdcbfa721d7a193f17432ece4c6d3313dbfc2)

Yeah sound deadening made a lot of difference, well impressed, stopped all the rattles. Plus made general driving around noticably more quiet. Door speakers are standard, they will be upgraded at some point (bit tricky in a Mk5 as they're all rivetted on) but that can wait until I get a better amp.
-
I run the higher quality focal speakers all round in the vRS. Those alone made a huge difference to the quality. Well worth doing.

While Nick at Detail My Car was doing the calipers he left me crack on with some polishing, I needed to correct my rear nearside wing and the rear offside door, for some reason they had gotten some more swirls on them.. the rest of the car is very good considering I've washed it probably 70 times since being corrected.. . They were corrected once again and re-protected.
So big shout out to Detail My Car really happy with my calipers now.
I also decontaminated my RC's and, gave them a light polish and re-waxed them. They will unfortunately be the wheels I go to UD on as I'm not going to have the mercs rebuilt in time :/
-
^^ total posting fail there mate!
-
not sure if its my laptop but the links are not working
-
Yes sorry, I copied from my build thread on uk-mkivs, which formats it differently. Should be good there now. :fighting2: :signLOL:
-
Today also got around to doing this...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2Ft1%2F1622627_271672743001399_8857010_n.jpg&hash=2b0d69e9a9596c2afd8a796718e5135b4a3dd284)
Was having some terrible knocking noises which this SEEMS to have cured (on the short drive back it only happened once more as opposed to basically every time I accelerated and then braked).
Fingers crossed it solved the problem.
-
Got fed up with the car.
Sold it for £11k and bought this on a lease deal, saving me a fortune.

Seriously Jay. You having a laugh or not?

No you didn't. This isn't mk4s mate.... Hopeless trolling won't get you anywhere
-
Seriously Jay. You having a laugh or not?
You know me John, I never joke.

Great parking.
-
When in a Citroen......
do as the French do?
Something like that.
-
its a courtesy car i hope :jumping:

Honestly never felt nicer getting back into my car. It just feels so tight and together and more beefy than the Citroen (which is not a bad car to be fair). Little things like how you sit "in" the seats rather than on them..the way the handbrake clicks down and feels solid and heavy rather than a bit flimsy... the complete lack of bodyroll compared to the wallowy Citroen. I'll miss it in a weird way but hey.
Sooo we have had the following done.
Votex splitter resprayed
Side skirts colour coded
Rear bumper resprayed
Rear valance colour coded with gloss black insert.
It's going back in for some other work soon, the rust patches under the wing and also to have a small scuff in the actual sill of the car (just where the drivers door is) removed.
Lemass Automotive did a really good job very happy with it. Going to wait for the rest of the paintwork to be done and then it's time to decontaminate the paint as it's got overspray all over it (to be expected), some light refinement and then I have some CQUK ready to go on so I'm excited for that as well.
-
Better parking.

Better parking.
Haha, the Citroen parking was better! The more spaces the higher the points.

Looks good mate. Where did you get the R32 rears from?
When you have the side skirts done did the bodyshop remove them and smooth/spray?
Cheers Si

Yes they were all removed and flatted and primed appropriately.
Got the lights from Alex (at AKS) :)

Where was the road trip to?
Nice to see a GTI owner doing a proper road trip

Jay, can you let me know what sort of money Lemass would charge to do the rear bumper lower section painted like yours?
Mines a little scuffed and think it'd really improve the look!
-
Awesome ! My dream seats !!

Nice seats mate, :happy2: I'd love a set of these

Those seats are beautiful. Very comfy too!
Yeah man not too bad!
I saw you enquiring about these!
Such nice seats!!
Yeah I didn't buy them from him.
Awesome seats. They are really comfortable but a bitch to get out of! Is your steering wheel really shiny? Get it cleaned!
It's just old.
Been cleaned and conditioned already.
It's all getting retrimmed soon so I can live with it :)
Where was the road trip to?
Nice to see a GTI owner doing a proper road trip
Blackburn! Long.com
And sorry to disappoint you, Jairm drove, as it's half the price in fuel and my boot is full of air ride and the seats would have crushed the tank!
Jay, can you let me know what sort of money Lemass would charge to do the rear bumper lower section painted like yours?
Mines a little scuffed and think it'd really improve the look!
best bet to give them a call mate.. I paid for everything in one go so don't know how much the individual part would be.
Awesome ! My dream seats !!
Lol yeah funny sometimes you think you'd never get some and then a few years later you can, something to aim towards?
Nice seats mate, :happy2: I'd love a set of these
Cheers :happy2:
Any new pics Jay?
Not really lol
Been/am very busy doing other things at the moment don't really have time for pictures :(
Car is looking unreal in the sig jay! Can't wait to drool all over it at UD!
Cheers man. yeah hopefully see you there :chicken:
Beautiful seats! We'll worth the journey. Looking forward to seeing the car at the weekend :happy2:
Defo worth the journey!
Yeah see you at the weekend :)
Must say.. I've taking a lot more of a liking to silver paint with purple wheels  :happy2: Good colour and wheel choice in my opinion
:happy2:
In other news, I managed to break 2 of the ride height sensors for the E-level (both fronts!!!).
Technically I didn't break it, crap design from Accuair meant a threaded shaft corrodes and snaps... easy enough to fix.. one side fixed by welding 2 bolts together and using lock nuts and the other side replaced later with a genuine accuair bit. Planning to change everything to stainless steel rather than steel bolts and alloy threaded shaft...
Got leaky DSG oil from the filter housing so tomorrow it's going in for a replacement filter housing along with new genuine filter and oil.. (for the second time in my ownership, albeit the first time wasn't genuine oil so probably a good thing) and my amp packed up... it was used and £30 so what do I expect really.
Jairm had one laying around and he was able to replace it easily which meant I had bass again... which is good!
And thanks to my partner in forum administration Alex for a decent GTI rear bench and his tools for fitting them.
As these recaros are heated I also got a heated climate panel from Rizzlekicks83 so now all I need is the heated seat loom thing!

Took some time to read through this Jay. . . Nice work there :drinking:
I may be wrong here, but is the engine still standard?? :surprised:
-
Hey man
Nice to meet you at UD once again.
As mentioned :) engine is standard for now.. intake, exhaust and stage 2 mapping on the cars but no real urge for lots of power, simply don't drive it very hard. It's pokey enough standard :)
-
hi jay looked for you at ur car several times yesterday but u were no where 2 b seen

Looked good yesterday man :happy2:

Man I knew you were OCD about your paintwork, but reading through the entire thread makes me think you have a problem...at first...now I'm just jealous that I don't have your patience!

Tut, Jay you're an admin now - you can't be seen driving on sides and fogs :surprised: :fighting: :booty: :stupid:
  :signLOL:
-
yeah I should know better!
It looks so peng though especially for the pictures
don't tell anyone okay?
Seats looking good Jay! Got any more pictures of them?
nah mate sorry not really taken any hah
unfortunately today some prick crashed into my car when it was parked out of the way, infront of my mums house, in a quiet respectable residential street - damaged the wing and the wheel.
Paint has been scuffed off the wing, it's dented way beyond repair (there are also creases further along the wing where it meets the sill, what I saw in the light that originally made me think "hang on it looks wrong"). Where it's pushed the bumper down there's now a gap along between the wing and the bumper and headlight (which I've managed to help fix by bending the panel back slightly) and the wheel is covered in silver paint and has some scuff marks on it.
Pissed off is not the word.
I had the whole front end, bonnet, wings, bumper and BOTH doors all painted and blended in so the colour match was spot on about 6-8 months ago, and about a month ago had the rest of the paintwork done from Lemass... why...........
Pretty sure we know who it was, my mum spotted an Espace or a Scenic which belongs to a neighbours friend , who is a childminder at home and has people coming in and out all day) - she admitted someone had a silver car - it was silver that hit my car - as well as the black plastic trims on the rear bumper of the espace matching up in terms of height to the damage on the car.
A sh*t storm will come down when I see the car next.
Gonna call about tomorrow to get it fixed, probably at Lemass again, feel like someone's stabbed me in the heart lol... oh well. She'll be fixed and back to her good self ASAFP.
-
:fighting:
f*ck!
-
:fighting:
Must be the worst feeling mate. Glad your making plans to get it sorted, shame it's not one of those breakages where you can use it as an excuse to make it better :sad1:
-
Sucks majorly. :sad1:
I feel for you, similar thing happened to me Christmas time, luckily it was just a grille in my case, people who do this and drive away have gotta be punished :fighting:
Hopefully it'll all be sorted soon enough though
-
This is actually so sick!!
-
Feel your pain mate, when I had my old car I just spend about £1700 that day parked in the most distant space in tescos car park, walked back and watched a taxi driver cut the space and scuffed the whole back bumper boot  I nearly fell over.......
You'll get this beaut up to its glorious self again soon enough mate :happy2:
Jake
-
Bummer.
-
Sorry to hear/see this Jay.
Is a kick in the gut when things like this happen. Know not much help but metal and paint can be repaired/replaced, just shame costs time and money.
On a lighter note, no 'Scene points' for running with a buckled wing?
-
Bet the bonnet gap is spot on now? :sad1:
-
 that's sh*t Jay. Feel for you and know the exact feeling you must have as it has happened to me more than once in the past.
Find the culprit and nothing short of hang, drawn and quartered will be enough! :fighting:
The fact that they drove away just lowers the type of person they must be!! :fighting:
-
proper sh*t that mate, feel for you
Someone has done the same to mine recently but not to that extent just very lightly enough to mark the bumper.
Lack of respect out there for others belongings.
-
That sucks man! :sad1: Too many bad drivers out there.
Hope you get her all back to normal soon.
-
Thanks everyone for the support and kind messages! :)
Alex funny you say that it's more even after that :chicken:
Not been posting about the car lately as I hated it!
It's going on to paint this Thursday and having a couple of other bits done too :) So she'll come back looking better than ever.
But on the way back from the meet I hit the magical 100k :)
Just about proves you can have a "show" car and use it daily!! Which I really wish I didn't have to... looking at buying a cheap runaround ;)

Got the GTI headed to Lemass in a few weeks on your recommendation (or at least the bumpers are headed there for a tidy) and cant believe the price! Was expecting about double what they quoted!
-
Good to see a car being used for what it was designed Jay, driving!
You still going to SpringFest on Sunday?
Si

I will be there. Just not sure what car I'll be there in (mine or the Citroen) - hopefully mine.

In for paint at Lemass.
Having the wing replaced (they had already primered and rolled the wing, very impressed!) and they're also going to be repainting my drivers door and the rubstrip
-
So I did make it to Springfest, albeit it very dirty.
Was a pretty hectic weekend. Picked her up from the bodyshop at Mid day on Saturday, they know what I am like with my paint so don't wash it as i have a very safe wash process which they can't do because of time (although i'm sure they're good they are painters not detailers) i only trust jairm or nick (dmc) to wash it for me if for whatever reason i wasn't able to.
it was a bit dirty from the week of driving as well as having some bodyshop dust over it, as you would expect - but really happy with the result - Just a shame I haven't had a chance to clean it and properly inspect it yet.
Immediately after that I went to stay at my friends house for Springfest - We cleaned his car and I gave a couple of panels a bit of work with the machine polisher at his request, he'd also had some fresh paintwork and had left some bird poo on it for too long which etched the paint, but I was able to get it out luckily... bird poo is bad guys!!! not that we didn't already know this :popcornsoda:
Mine sat dirty and alone in the corner by herself, and the drive up to the Pod was rainy and wet and the car would have gotten filthy anyway. I chose to leave it dirty rather than wash it but inflict lots of marring from waterlessly washing a car with baked on crud. Nevertheless a poor show from me!
What I had done from Lemass Autmotive:
Replacement drivers side front wing (rolled flush need the other side doing like that as well to be honest)
Drivers side door painted
Both front wings removed and rusty sills repaired and painted
Smoothed front grill (finally :happy2:)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-prn2%2Ft31.0-8%2F1957768_10152811037024782_2412152121568159234_o.jpg&hash=27fb54b6135f59569734902bd5eb44fe588fad88)
Having that all done made me realise that I need some either serious restoration of my front grills or whole new replacement units, I also want the open fog grills as I think they look better and would suit the front end a bit more.
Going to pull my finger out and get the Mercs done and built ASAP. Missing too many shows with them. That also means I can take the RC's off for refurb as well. Then I can look at changing my wheels for next season.
I was chatting to my bodyshop guy and he offered to do them. I need to work out logistically which is going to be the cheapest for me as I already have a cracking offer from Jake on painting.
Anyway I'm just glad to have my car back.
Also thanks to Alex (AKS Alex of course) for my heated seat loom and the "instructions"

To Springfest?
Quite a few people.. GTI Dav was there, RizzlePizzleWigglyManship of course, Bantam, few others :)
Had a cracking time at Edition, was happy overall with the way the car looked. And yes I run with no front plate at all #USSpec #5-0 can't touch me HAHAHA. :popcornsoda:
Going to get the Merc faces painted, giving me a chance to get the RC's off and refurbed over the summer.

Very tempted by this. How noisy is it in "normal" driving? - can you still be subtle?

Revo
Yes it is.
And you can drive it quietly if you want.. any intake will be noisier than standard anyway.

I have exactly the same problem Jay, yesterday some idiot hit my car and ran off now theres a gap between the bumper and headlight and my wing is dented and creased :indifferent:
how much? + how long? did it take to be fixed?
-
New wing and paint came to around £350 as an estimate from Lemass I also got them to paint the door for blending purposes and this also included a new door rub strip.
I can't tell you the exact price because I get bits done in bulk from them so pay an overall figure we don't bother breaking it down.
Would you be interested in selling the cover on the bottom right hand side of the photo?
I think it's the air duct cover
Hi no sorry they're a right pig to get hold of and when/if i return her to standard i don't want to be faffing around for parts .
best bet is a breakers yard if you need one they're all the same. (well tdis and the larger petrols).

Love the progress : )

haha sorry :booty: :booty:
It's great man wish I had got the performance kit the adjustable camber would be sweet. will be upgrading to them soon i think.
Love the progress : )
Thanks bud it's coming together now.
Still plenty to do though..
Bit annoyed as I bought some Hertz ESK163L speakers from Car Audio Security, I was told they'd be a "direct fit" and they aren't. So the tweeters and larger speakers are in but the mids don't fit so I currently have no front mids. Pretty pissed off but hey that's life Jairm will sort it out for me.
Need to buy a 4ch amp to run the door speakers anyway to make the most of it.
Want to redesign the boot build completely to incorporate the audio stuff .
Got interior retrim as well and the Mercedes to go on hopefully have them on Mid June time as still waiting on the paint from America which is the only place to get it as it's special order.
Mid way through doing some corrective work on the car and putting a product called Cquartz on.
I detailed the car in August last year and it's still overall in very good condition - the roof needs some pretty major attention but the rest of the panels are still very good so only needed some light refinement.
Finished the front bumper, bonnet, both front wings and all the doors today. Got to do the roof, rear quarters and boot and rear bumper tomorrow as well as some other little tasks.
Gonna have loads of pics on the camera but one terrible potato mobile shot..

A few pictures after... what a faff. Including some localised wet sanding of the marks in the paintwork from the main dealer when they resprayed the bonnet. Also gave polishing the windscreen a bash which yielded some improvements, anyone who polishes would know glass is the hardest of all to polish up as it's the hardest bloody thing in the world.. normal polishes and pads won't even touch it....it was so distracting to drive at night or in evening sunset light but it's massively helped out rayon pads and cerium oxide based polishes in use

And it might have included a 3 inch center section as well...
big thanks to Michael for suppling me with his old de-cat stuff!! Just need a new rear box now... it sounds rude.

A few small changes...
Purple puddle lights...work really well actually.

Remap booked for 8th of July.
-
You got the back box on too?
-
Nah haven't picked it up yet, need to arrange with Alex.. plan is to get everything on when I go for more power.
-
Just my two pence but I think those puddle lights look tacky in purple
-
I think you need a better quality photo to show them off, the camera phone ones don't do it justice properly! Nice long exposure at night time.
Certainly not seen it before, but that's maybe because I live a sheltered life.

they look fooking lush IMO, as said, the pic doesn't do them justice. My camera is at my other halfs house, I'll get a pic tonight.
Will admit it's a bit of a risque thing and i wasn't sure at first but i defo like them.
Had a mixed few days... stupid woman cut across infront of me at a roundabout... I had stopped completely , she drove right across my nose. Got out and checked and she had scuffed right across my front end!!! B*&%h!!!!
Police witnessed it and we parked up and she didn't say sorry whatsoever.... probably too busy stuffing her face with cakes. honestly no idea how people can get a driving license with such poor observational skills.

Was very very lucky really.
As you may have read I ceramic coated my car... we also did Nicks Dads brand new F30 335Dxdrive, someone pushed a trolley into that, scuffed the paint with two big white lines and dented the wing.. Nick polished it up and turns out the ceramic coating had actually taken the hit and saved the paint!
So I thought I'd give it a try... turns out it definitely saved some damage!!
Has taken a bit off the paint but got away with it really, could have been far worse. Polished up and re-coated the area with some wax until I can get a chance to Cquartz it again.
I did do a quick and dirty touch up... when I fitted these :)
Open fog light grills... from Ebay £25 delivered, fit really quite well indeed.

God that's not been deleted yet? lololol
Umm kind of, yes I do, but can't go back to it, one of those things :( cars you should never have sold.
Hopefully moving onto some new things but to be honest it's all big expensive things now aside from a couple of little parts, list left...
- ED30 rear valance but I want some custom bits done on this which I am keeping quiet
- New front fogs as both mine have suffered from a STONECHIP TO THE KNEE
- Front end respray over winter
- After a replacement grill to have as a show grill so I can swap them over at shows without being done for number plate.
- Rear doors audio upgrade to match my front Hertz and a 4ch amp to power them
- Interior retrim
- K04 kit fitted (need HPFP, Injectors and a few other parts which Alex/AKS is going to be sorting out for me)

I did also get runner up on Saturday in show and shine but it's a saturday which is like winning a race against one legged people, except I came second :popcornsoda:
That lovely grey Mk5 with the Lambo wheels and Forge brakes got a well deserved win on the Saturday, Sunday I am not sure who won as I missed the presentations because we were sleeping.

Yup they are. She likes them.
I need to give it a full correction as the paint's shocking but the rest of it looks good. We put a rs4 grill on it the other day as well. It's looking really tidy.

Not quite finished in the above picture, needed a few more coats and flatting and polishing. I will be polishing them up if necessary and applying Cquartz to them prior to having them built up.
Tomorrow morning will get the tyres on and have them mounted.
-
Awww mate these look sick!!! :pomppomp:
Makes me want to buy new alloys and paint them purple
These would look epic on my CW!!!
What kind of paint is this? Code? If you don't mind me asking

It's a hosue of kolor finish mate.
Was a very busy weekend.
Friday I got off work early to go collect my wheels from Lemass.... where they have been for like 3-4 months lol.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-xpa1%2Fv%2Ft1.0-9%2F10518648_329029573932382_7947636675472411674_n.jpg%3Foh%3D345db22c5afa6c4d582a479aae9db79b%26amp%3Boe%3D544B8FF1&hash=45f29ac5a75158dd7aaa49bef19615c4d10bceb3)
Went up to the unit after a night at Nick's and was there ALL NIGHT polishing them and building them. I also coated them with Cquartz after polishing both the lips and the centers up... felt dead. Then was working on the RR Evoque you see in the picture.. After an 8 hour overnight wheel building stint (after being at work that day) I had to have a kip in the car before getting the tyres on and putting the wheels on.
Rebuilt with brand new gold bolts.

Yeah it's good! Only downside is that whenever we try to do something not car related it always ends up getting stuck working on something... still need to paint her calipers.. grr.
Got a few other updates... changed my boost gauge from the column mount pod which was really squeaky and annoying (it was fine on my TDI???) and replaced with a Newsouth Vent Gauge pod..

Got a puncture within about 5 days of putting the Merc wheels back on... was right on the shoulder so unrepairable.. Unfortunately both my tyres had camber wear so had to buy a pair... they didn't have my tyres in stock...and needed the car that day so bought some Pirelli PZeros in 205/40.. so fronts are running 215/35 and rears 205/40 hence the slightly odd front/wheel arch fitment... Once I have 205/40 on the front which I will do end of the month, along with some 8-10mm rear spacers (still need to calculate) then it will be sitting really well.
Something else that happened yesterday with Jairm's help... did (I guess it's what it's called) a euro rear light conversion...so what was the fog light, changed the red lense to clear..which is still a red fog light when on... but is also a second reverse light. So now the rear of the car is symmetrical from the rear on the lights rather than having one clear and one red light insert... As we were all working up the unit till quite late didn't get any finished pictures, but I will put them up when I can get a chance.
We are also going to be doing some other rear light tweaks soon... but need more time.
Also going to eventually get my Hertz front mid speakers fitted and get some rear components and a 4 channel amp to drive them...
-
Nice updates. Having just done a rear speaker and amplifier install, I can say because you have a 5 door life will be so much easier. Although I don't think it's very easy to run the front doors off an amp, as where the wiring loom for the door meets the grommet, it passes through a plug section rather than straight wires, so there's no room (that I can see) to pass aditional speaker wires through, unless you use some of the free connections on the plugs but it's a pain in the arse to get to. Not sure if the rear doors are the same, probably worth checking before you start. That's my 10p anyway...
Still love the rims. :happy2:
-
Your car looks great Jay, makes me want to buy a silver gti, I'm surprised you've not decided to fit a highline speedo, I think that should be your next mod!
-
Thanks! Actually I was toying with it but not of a huge importance to me at the moment. I want a highline but I want to change the dash cluster LED's around.. carry on the purple theme... but need more work..

Yeah, it's not easy but going to be worth it. :scared:
We will find a good solution for running the wires.. my bro Jairm is a god.
The sound difference between my front and my rear speakers is crazy. Even without the additional punch of an amp... want my rear ones.. probably sort it all next month actually :)

I'll start a build thread once I have done some more bits to it but it's Nick's (he owns Detail My Car who I help out with the detailing) bosses old car which I got for a very, very very good price. The car is very high spec... Xenons, Full heated Leather, RCD510 with MDI kit, nearly new Goodyear Eagle F1's all round..was under warranty with VW until May 2014 and has full service history.. mileage is high.. over 100k now.. but still got it for a bargain.
Plans are to make it around 240-250bhp and put the best in handling components on it and just enjoy it as a nice car to drive and do the occasional trackday etc. Will be featuring larger brakes and that sort of thing. :happy2:
Onto bigger and better things? Mk6 R?
Unfortunately not.
My plan with the GTI was to make it into as much of a "show" car as you can and still retain the driving fun.
It drives brilliantly despite the air nay-sayers, however - It does SO many miles that, while I can afford it, I can't justify it anymore.
I've averaged about 800 miles per month through work alone (just going to customer sites etc) the last 3 months.. I'm seemingly always driving about. My work provide me with £150 a month car allowance (to cover "wear and tear") - by far the lowest in the company - and I get fuel at about 20p per mile. The fuel costs are about equal but the £150 per month gets eaten up by things like tyres, other little mods and bits and pieces.
Combined with the trips to London once a week for the meets and events, it's just slogging up and down the motorways, not to mention travelling to see my Girlfriend (it's a 50 mile return trip which isn't much but as I always end up going to hers as she doesn't like my houseshare situation) means that my mileage has exponentially gone up and how can I ever hope to have a car nice enough to be considered a show car when it gets used against what I intended it to be used for??? It's completely pointless.
I am keeping the GTI as is for a month or two - I can afford to run both cars, both cars are insured etc.. So if no-one is interested in buying it whole I'll be stripping it and selling it as a somewhat more standard vehicle and selling the bits separately.
Life story over.

Nice choice with the CR170 Rocco, I ran one for 12months or so. . .
Ran it pretty low on coilies and it looked mint :jumping: the arches are higher than on the golf so closing the arch gap leaves you with less clearance underneath than on the golf.
Loads and loads of VCDS tweaks possible with these (XDS, DRL option in MFD, needle sweep. . .). - if you have the facelift interior and yours is a MY2010 (hard to tell from the reg)
You should get mid-high 50's on a run, and think the tank is bigger than the mk5. 700+miles is possible to a tank
The soundaktor gives it a petrol-like soundtrack (if you like that sort of thing :ashamed:)
A Revo map will see 200-210bhp in typical smooooooth CR delivery. Stage 2 gets a pretty much smokeless 220bhp. Intake is supposed to make a bit of difference too.
Enjoy :drinking:
-
The under laying chassis of a mk5 Golf, the looks of a coupe and the performance you can live with. Win all round.
My only problem with the Rocco is I can not decide which wheels suit them... Otherwise it's a beautiful car.
-
I'm looking to buy a Rocco just like that, nice purchase. Do the '59 plate ones come with all the MK6 interior gubbins like the later ones?

59 is usually a mk6 steering wheel with the mk5 climate control.
Look for a 10 plate or a 60 plate, that's the one with the XDS and needle sweep switchable through VCDS and the mk6 climate system . There's plenty of threads about the model year differences on Scirocco Central Forum
-
It has the Mk6 interior Dave.
Cheers for the insight into your ownership Gray :)
Already a step ahead of you on the Vcds stuff though ;)
Gonna start a new build thread.
-
You thought it had died?!?
WELL YOU ARE WRONG MOO HAH HA HA.
But no, I'm going to keep it for the rest of the month (and perhaps into October) to finish off the shows and then I will be splitting it.
I fitted some 12mm H&R spacers at the weekend after a days work at teh unit giving me a final ET of 32 on an 8.5 with -2.8 degrees of camber (the other side has -3.1 which tucks a bit more when fully aired out which is annoying!!) :ashamed:

Should have done it ages ago. Looks spot on IMO for what was a daily driver.

Car's now basically done.
It will be seeing a couple of other shows.. Players & Westside - But everything is up for sale now.
I have got some standard Monza 2 alloys which will be getting put on and will be selling car as standard (with the bodywork..).
The list of available parts are as follows:
Newsouth Boost Gauge in Vent Pod
The Merc Wheels
The BBS RCs
AVH2500BT headunit / bluetooth / ipod setup
The air ride inluding boot build (being removed early october).
12mm H&R spacers
Subwoofer enclosure (not the subwoofer).
The modded R32 rears
I would also swap the colour coded splitter/skirts/rear valance for standard ones as well with cash my way...
K04 conversion kit.
I will do a proper for sale thread when I have the parts together
-
Spacers £?
-
£60 as no bolts.
Well, bolts are too long as I bought the right bolts for my merc wheels. Haven't even been a mile on them yet.
-
I shall look forward to seeing this car for the last time at Players next weekend. Sad times...
-
Sell me those wheels!
-
Theyre up for 1k
I am swapping them for some porsche splits for the scirocco a week on Saturday. If you want them then thats fine but would need to be before this.
-
Mercs did sell to a friend in the end.
BBS RC's are sold too.
I took the Golf out for one last weekend, to a local meet up and to Players, boy it was good to drive I really did miss it.
But onto pastures new.
The last photo I took at West End Dubs a local meet with my other half.

-
Missed this at Players, gutted! So is the GTI sold now or going up for sale soon?
-
My Scirocco wheels are in for refurb so I'm using the Golf at the moment.
As soon as the Scirocco is back on the road, the seats are being moved over into the Rocco, Audio being stripped, lights, etc.
Air is coming off in October, as it's £300 and needs to wait till payday.
-
Can you use you air on your Rocco or are the suspension/chassis build totally different? I might have your Powerflex bush off you too, too poor to come down and buy those lovely R32 lights plus wiring! :sad1:
-
The air would fit but I just don't want to put air on this car that's all.
Been there and done that now :)
Not want to have the "scene" life anymore, going for an outright performance build!
Am open to offers of course on all the parts
-
Is gratitude an acceptable currency? Otherwise I have nothing to offer right now... :sad1:

I'll be subscribing to the Rocco build if your going for power
Big turbo CR170 = :notworthy:
-
Poor Golf :(
Audio out.
Both RC's and Mercs sold.
R32 lights sold.
Boost gauge sold.
Intake, black OEM and porsche caps sold
Air to be off soon.
Rocco seats into the Golf (need to re-wire the airbag plugs as they are different).
Sitting very sorry for itself at the moment

Aww, best not show it the Rocco. :sad1:
-
Aww, best not show it the Rocco. :sad1:
Haha very true..
Currently the car is a bit more put back together... all the purple is off... stock intake will be back on... Decat is staying due to the Stage 2 mapping... Stock rear lights, has the Scirocco leather front seats, no boost gauge, got some standard Monza 2 wheels for it which are being refurbed, have 4 part worn decent tyres to go on... 2 Eagle F1's and 2 Conti sport 2s...air needs to come off but a bit tight money wise so seeing how that goes.
-
Got it's last bath on Saturday night before the new owner took it away.

Bye bye.
-
Is the new owner on here, or will they be if not?
-
Are you still doing White 997 GT3 weekend rentals to forum members at heavily discounted prices? @xjay1337 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7542)
-
Ahahha I wish. :happy2:
Lovely motor.
Is the new owner on here, or will they be if not?
He's a car guy in the scene so may be.
I did say to get a build thread up haha.
-
Thread title - "Bought, but building more". :happy2:
-
Hahaah maybe.
He is using it as a base for a new project for him.already damaged it as he messaged me and apparently some unkind types have already taken a crowbar to the wing :(
My poor figgie
-
ive purchased the car and have just joined up so hey guys!

So how many times already, since selling the GTI, have you looked at others on Auto Trader?
-
Should have kept it and put the K04 on it...
-
I miss things like the way the wheels at and the comedy value of air but I love my scirocco much more to drive.

Have you just driven into a parked car :driver: :signLOL:
-
Ouch, always a shame to see a car come to such a biter end, especially one that was so well cared for.
-
Shouldn't effect me cos it's gone, and I didn't ever fully bond with it but i've never modded a car to that level before really. was proper gutted.
-
What happened?
-
Apparently the Astra came round a corner on the wrong side of the road doing about 50mph.
That's what the guy told me anyway.
Airbags didn't go off as airbag light was on.
-
Pretty damn bad that, not much you could salvage if you broke it for parts either. RIP old Golf.
