Does anyone else's downshifts with the DSG Box quite harsh? Mines quite harsh on the way down but in an R32 I test drove it was seamless.... Uh oh?
-
Silky smooth on my R, but the DSG box is mapped. As stock it wasn't clunky, just slower.
-
Try a DSG adaption.
Mine is pretty smooth. Not as smooth as the upshifts, but a lot of it depends on what you are doing.
If you are decellerating and change down it's really good. If you are accelerating and then change down it can confuse it.
6th to 5th is always really good though.

It's just under braking going 3-2-1, it's fine in D and S just harsh in manual
-
Mines not that smooth 2-1. When braking to a stop I let it just do its thing. I never manually shift 2-1. There's no need.
-
I agree about 2-1 being crap.
Very rarely does it ever go to 1 in D, unless I literally stop. Thank god.

On a local steep hill, I need second gear to hold the speed down. I've found that a tiny bit of pressure on the throttle - not enough to cause acceleration - smoothes the down-change from third noticeably. Not sure why, as the engine still revs to match the gear, but it definitely helps.
-
Coasting under engine braking, mine's fine - perfectly smooth, and same under braking.
As said before, 2-1 is a bit clunky, so I don't bother with that change when in manual mode.
Much age difference between the R and yours?
-
It's just over a year younger then my gti, with 10k less miles... If its similar with a lot of people it gives me peace of mind. Apart from that the 'box is brilliant.
Thanks for the replies. :happy2:

Mines only a bit clunky if I gear down while braking heavily - in other words gears are changing at the wrong revs if u get my drift??
-
Ahh 2nd to 1st in manual mode. I know never use that combination as 1st is only an acceleration gear and not for deceleration, but if it is used it isnt smooth. Drive mode never goes into 1st unless you come to a standstill. Around town I use drive mode when setting off and stopping and then flip into manual mode once away, unless I'm doing a fast getaway at the lights. :happy2:

Yes shifting down the lower gears is a bit clunky on mine.
To make down shifts in manual mode quicker when you are changing down to accelerate, i have found applying some throttle before changing down makes it much quicker. The gearbox must know if you are accelerating that you will want to change down a gear or two.

^ sounds good practice to rev match

And how does that work on a DSG.... :popcornsoda:

Just before downshifting press the accelerator a bit further (similar firmness to when you are overtaking). The box will then pre-select the next lower gear, and when you click the down paddle you will get a smooth, no hesitation down gear change. The best rev match you will achieve on a granny box.

Yeah its not rev matching, its giving the box a heads up on what you want to do. Scottymon's post explains it better :happy2:
