well think its about time to get the brake fluid changed in the golf what sort of price should I be paying ?
-
I'll be paying £57 for mine at the stealers next week. Not sure if that's good/bad but seems about right I guess...
-
ok that's not to bad has I was thinking it be around £70-80 will deff have a ring about tomorrow will try stattlers has just down road from me :driver:
-
I got quoted £70 from the stealers, so around that is all good. (Did it with me mate and VCDS, saved £50 including a few beers and a can of 501.14+)
I would however, question them, and ask whether they do the ABS cycle/purge with that, it's part of the fluid change and in the book for them to do it, it requies them to hook up to VAS.
TBH I bet most don't but should and it pisses me off a bit, as I hate it when dealers cut corners and charge a premium.
If they prmoise it, wait and watch them, you'll see a YTS kid moaning in the drivers seat whilst they hold back the brake pedal during the ABS purge! lol.
-
ok will ask the question about the abs purge when I ring around has never had it done before , starting to sound all complicated lol
modern cars  me lol

Customer is always right... give it some decent stops from speed 1**... if the pedal continues to be firm and it stops well this side of pads and discs... then I wouldn't worry, if it's spongy; moan. :happy2:
-
well its got to get better than it is now has starting to get to point were I may need to jump out and stop it :signLOL: there a slight gr :signLOL:ating noice when I brake yet the pads and discs all look good to me , see what the pros say
-
Might be dust shields, or a bit of grit... if you have the time / inclination / space, get the wheels and pads off and check it all out, could save you some pennies... however if your near or around 2 years of a fluid change get the stealers to do it. :happy2:
-
to be honest the guy I got the golf from not been the most honest, got a folder full of work but there nothing in there for the brake fluid so I think its better to just have it changed for peace of mind , plus clutch peddle seems alittle soft but I had a mechanic check that is not the dmf so been told clutch shares the same res has brake fluid
-
I got mine done for £49 at a Northern Ireland dealer.

Full change with ABS cycle and correct fluid?
If so, bargain. Not worth doing it yourself for that.

Mate who done yours for ya?
-
Edwin May in Portadown. However I have a very strong suspicion they didn't cycle the abs.

Well rang stattlers this morning to get a price on brake fluid change and was given a very good price of £40 all in so booked in , asked about abs purge and said that it wasn't really needed so these guys know there stuff not sure has to what a abs purge would do anyway

thanks for the link scotymon , did voice my concerns with stattler about this and the guy I spoke to said it wasn't something what was needed but if I wanted it doing they would but it would be another hour onto the bill , these guys build some amazing cars so they know there stuff
-
I got some sh*tty coloured fluid out after activating The ABS. Only takes a few extra minutes and there's probably already two guys on the job?
-
I can't think of any reason why a hygrscopic fluid wouldn't need changing at prescribed service intervals. Does it not absorb moisture because it's in an ABS module? No, of course not.
Worth noting that most garages also do not change hydraulic clutch fluid...why not? Because it's not on the service schedule. My clutch slave cylinder on my MX5 just failed. Full dealer service and never been done. My sisters MR2 the same. My VX220 also never had it done till I got JKM to do it. Why should this hydraulic system be treated any differently, it's the same fluid.
Insist it's done or go somewhere else where they say 'yes we do that as a matter of course'. :happy2:
-
not to sure just said it be another hour on top and not really needed , different people different opinion I guess
-
ok so rang another vw specialist garage that I know and asked about brake fluid change and was told £45 all in and when I asked if that was with the abs purged they said yep that's all the system done , so going to go there instead never 2 guessed me when asked if the abs was included
-
It certainly doesn't take an extra hour. The system guides you through the process too, which iirc lasts about 30 seconds or so for each caliper, so at max, with Master cylinder top up and VAS/VCDS hook up... +15mins?
At the end of the day, I'm sure the car will feel fine without doing it, but for me at least, I tend to keep cars a long time and the longevity of expensive parts like the ABS pump are very important; it's nice to know you've done everything you can to keep things tip top.
Also, I was under the impression that this was part of the VW service for brake fluid changes.

It is. They're supposed to hook up VAS and purge the abs.
