not paying vw i hope?

New turbo can be had for £500 and 4 hours labour + oil change. £750 paying an aftermarket specialist is about right.
Ive seen a few 'new' turbos from VW lately marked REMANF on the box, to me that seems like a reconditioned turbo so make sure you get a new one when they say its a new turbo.
-
yes that price for turbo from VW. Recon box from specialist. This has to be done as cant px in the way it is!! just hope nothing else goes :sad1: got to love these cars but when things go they seriously go!!! It has 100k on it so perhaps can expect it.

do feel gutted about it as its seems on thing after another but changing it would costs more plus I love the car.. is turbo a weakness etc?

I'd say the turbo is only a weakness if the life of the turbo has been shortened through lack of oil at some point in its life / wrong grade of oil used / using too much boost when the engine is still cold over a number of occasions.
I've heard of turbo's in similar engines (KO3 equipped) lasting to over 200k :happy2:

If treated incorrectly the turbo is a weakness on any engine. People who are not in the know drive the engines hard from cold. Dont let the engine idle for a few seconds before touching the accelerator and turn the engine straight off after a long drive. All those things cause wear on the turbine shaft. I would imagine the previous owner didnt take care warming up and cooling the engine down.

Can you explain this a little better? Sorry if I'm being thick.

When you start the engine up you need to wait for a few seconds until the oil is up to pressure and flowing through all parts of the engine. Initially the turbo will not have a lot of oil inside it until the oil is flowing round once up to pressure. I normally wait for at least ten minutes until using the power as the oil will be nice and warm by then dependant on the ambient temp.

Thanks all!! Car in having it done with oil,
Filters all being done. Hopefully once done last for another 100k with care...

Essentially wait until the engine has warmed up before boosting?!
