Ive not gone mad but does anybody else sometimes think that their car is way faster than it needs to be? Compared to some on here my car prob sounds a bit slow, i have a remapped edition 30 with panel filter and nothing else :ashamed:
I have just been out for a drive and it just seems really fast, ive been going mad recently for a sports cat and dp but when i think about it i really dont need it, i dont know why i want it to be any faster
Is it just me? Dont flog me too hard :scared:

I know exactly what your sayin pal, espcially if your cars a daily driver sometimes it can be to much, I'm in the same boat at the minute, the S3 is runnin REVO and TBE, and recently I've had an itch for a HPFP and stg 2+, but I really like the way the car makes its power at the minute and it isn't exactly slow. The stg2+ will turn it a bit lairy and can't decide if thats what I want.
My ED30 was runnin APR HPFP, TBE and map and it was fantastic but anything but dry and it was a handfull.
But you can't help but want more, is it human nature? I know I'm not kiddin myself and the pump will be on before the end of the month
-
You're talking about finding the base of the modding slope right?
Good luck!
-
Im looking foward to running Stage 1 in either Apr or Bluefin at this moment in time.
Same thoughts about the downpipe whether to splash on that aswell.I dont want the Non Res Exhaust to become too loud .But want to see 1st the improovement of the map before doubling my expense. Pointless going too mad for a front wheel drive (imo)as i feel the Edition 30 is in standard form , is a very well balanced car.
I hope the remap doesnt ruin the cars appeal as it has currently. Less agressive route would be preferable rather the the more Agressive Revo map offering, and also stop the rate it'll chew DSG clutch packs and Tyres by overdoing it.
On a seperate note, I Have touched base with Jkm today and have made arrangements for next month already with them, so i am itching to get underway.
-
You're car is as fast as it needs to be, it was when it was standard, but is it fast enough? Nope, nothing is ever fast enough...
-
It's only as fast as you want it to be. You can have all the power in the world, doesn't mean you have to use it!
''Everything in moderation'' :happy2:

 :congrats: life is always easier when your honest with yourself.

Woooooah! Spooky mate....
Just been out for an hour in mine, absolutely kicked the crap out of it and used half a tank of juice :driver:
Was thinking exactly the same about mine, waaaaaay spooky, must be the family link lol

certainly wasnt expecting a post on this forum saying dont remap its too fast :signLOL:

you have to be progressive with the throttle (as robin says) not aggressive!! good luck tho its pretty nice once youve dont itbut as everyone "normally" says on here theres always something next! im quite happy with a filter and revo for the minute but will probably end up with a HPFP and blueflame eventually lol. :happy2:
-
Dont get me wrong i love my map, i wouldnt take it off, but i just know its more than fast enough and still want more lol, very strange, i have these debates with myself 2 or 3 times a day :stupid:
-
strange? i think thats completely normal get saving
-
i know how you feel, pirelli will stop at stage 1 (i fear this will be used against me) but have cravings with the scirocco, resist resist
-
I have a few takes on this one.......
1.Too much power is never enough.
2. It is better to have power and not need it, than to need power and not have it.
3. A car that seems too fast is either being driven out of the owners capability or out of the cars - if it is the latter, then simply redress the area that has the shortcomings.
:happy2:
-
....
Very interesting topic! I've often thought that I don't need any more power and have consequently spent my money on things like suspension and Quaife and brakes. I very rarely get wheelspin and enjoy my car's handling and balance.
She's not the fastest GTI out there but so what - She's taut and tactile and able to go for fast overtakes without risking my licence every time.
:happy2:

I have a remapped Edition 30 (and a panel filter which has been in the garage for a month :ashamed:) ...... and I am very happy with it. The map has been on the car for getting towards a year and without any problems.
I have a more aggressive map and have tried that a few times but, TBH, I really like the power delivery of the more 'modest' older Superchips DSG map I am running. It seems to really suit the car and allows me to deploy all power much more readily than the more aggressive newer map. I can swap maps when I like - as they are both on the laptop - but haven't .... the older less aggressive map still enables me to complete overtakes far more safely than when I was running the car as standard ! Oh, and still gives nearly 300bhp
I can afford a TBE if I want .... but don't want to 'ruin' the feel of the car which is very important to me. I have had quicker cars but being able to 'thrash' a car every now and then and not run the risk of getting locked up is more fun .....
There is alot to be said for being able to use all of the power more often than 'most' of the power sometimes .... and carefully at that.
This all said, I really want a TBE to make the top end fizz

Surely the exchaust is more for the sound and sporty feel than sheer power gains which aren't breathtaking!
a decent exhaust has the ability to make you feel like your going faster than you are!

And 25hp & 30+ftlbs.. Makes a big difference on these cars for sure! Especially on a ED30 with the bigger turbo..
-
this topic has obviously come up at the right/wotng time just to aggravate me...
been thinking more about this as my car "budget has been reduced just recently with c/crunch kicking in and kids on hols and GF job change so ive just been trying to decide do i really nedd and intake and exhaust to boost performance as its easily quick enough for me on an everyday opportunity, and yet i want more...more sound more engine noise more speed more more!
or do i be sensible and spend the reduced money i have on cosmetics to make the car look even better(imo) and to get it looking just so
rims
coded bumpers
moar carbon bits etc etc
haveing said all that i couldnt resist the american carbonio copy on ebay, so who am i kidding :ashamed:  :rolleye:
yes no yes no yes no
aaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

depends a lot on the circumstances and frequency of your driving.
if I'm commuting all week, then I get used to 'low rpm cruising' and a subsequent quick blast at the weekend and it feels really fast.
however if I spend the weekend at an event , enjoy the car to its potential for 2 days then it start to feel slow.....
in short do some track days and other forms of pushing the car and youll prob get way more used to it and want more.
conversely if you want to save ££££ just drive it like a pensioner for a week (or use a diff car) then jump into the Ed30
:happy2:
-
I use my car daily to get me to and from work and also quite often go for a spin over woodhead and holmfirth etc... I love my car and wouldnt change it at all i was simply saying it doesnt need to be as fast as it is in reality and yet i want more...
I am booked in to have sportlines fitted on monday though so that should keep me gong for a while :jumpmove:
-
....
Something which hasn't been mentioned yet is that with high performance comes greatly increased safety.
- Power to overtake more swiftly and to have more opportunities to overtake.
- Greater stability due to improved handling.
- Safer with improved braking performance. I'd rather have good brakes and not need them than need them and not have them.
Just borrow an ordinary car for a day and you'll appreciate just how much safer and more enjoyable even a standard GTI is. The ex-factory GTI is excellent.
But with power comes responsibility.

^^^^^^^^ Indeed Yoda!
-
I think a lot of people would benefit from a driving course than a remap! I will be doing this at some point as i can see it giving me so much more enjoyment from using the car to its full potential rather than using it well under!
-
Sounds like a good idea, much better than 'thinking' your a good driver and killing yourself...
It doesnt take much to make our cars really quick and without driving experience or sense it can be dangerous, hence outrageous insurance!!
My 1.8t was fast but my ed30 is different again. I thnk people may be getting confused with my original post, i dont think my car is too fast to drive or handle just simply that for road use it is excessive, but great
-
I think a lot of people would benefit from a driving course than a remap! I will be doing this at some point as i can see it giving me so much more enjoyment from using the car to its full potential rather than using it well under!
....Absolutely! Remap your brain!
The Mk5 GTI was my first front wheel drive car that I had owned and I quickly found myself wondering where the let-go points were on local twisty B-roads I know well. So rather than find out the hard and expensive way I went on a CarLimits course with 3 other GTI owners on North Weald airfield. Later on I did a course with a highly qualified Police instructor one-to-one on public roads.
These courses haven't made me a perfect driver but they have helped me enormously to avoid potential incidents and have contributed to me being let off speeding more than once after being followed by unmarked cars. Why? - Simply because I was practising what I've been taught and it was noticed and viewed as good driving but my speeds were well over the 70. This doesn't mean I'll be so lucky next time and I do watch my speed more than I used to.
Also, remapping your brain transfers to whatever car you are driving.
You've hit the nail on the head, Jules :happy2:
A GTI isn't excessive but just about right for UK roads - But only providing the driver is focussed and calm enough.
-
Driving courses can drastically alter the way you look at driving and the way you drive.
I am in the lucky position that my employer has, over the years, sent me on 10 weeks worth
They have made me a slower driver but one that is - hopefully - more in control. I hate to think about the way I drove as a teenager !
A remap is great but if you can't control the car in the first place or don't plan ahead you are a liability .... you don't have to go mad with courses - but one or two can't do any harm. Some people get addicted to them ... but then you are spending lots and lots. I think the law of diminishing returns applies .... but I have never forgotten what I have been taught .... oh, and unsurprisingly enjoyed every second of the courses when I did them ....
-
as most be people on here know, I wrote off my ED30 about 14 months ago, through no fault but my own. It made me realise how easy it can happen, I've always driven performance cars, never had anything else, started with an XR2 at 18, and consider myself a pretty good driver, we all do don't we
As a result of the accident I was offered a driver awareness course rather than prosecution, it was a day and a half course, I decided to go into it with a positive frame of mind and make the most of it rather than see it as a punishment. It was really enjoyable and I learnt loads, mostly things you think you know but don't really. A lot of observation training, I finished top of the group and the instructers recommended I take the driver training further which I'm going to to do :happy2:
so i think driver training is a good thing
-
Hmmm... I feel the opposite... I want more more more!
-
My car is standard apart from a Milltek cat back non res & edititon 30 alloys.I love the way it looks & sounds & ''yes'' for what i want it's perfect.
-
Interesting topic guys, have to say. IMO it's all down to your own taste. Some will get bored of power very quickly cough-JC, Hurdy-cough  and some are happy with the car as standard. But I would like to see how many people on here that have gone for further mods (TBE etc) and then thought "it's to fast, i'm taking it off!!!".. Not many at a guess :signLOL:

Nice to see you have decided to join the dark side pal :happy2:. I'm sure whatever software you go with you will love it mate. But I wouldn't dismiss Revo to quickly though Steve in regards to it being to aggressive. The Select + switch can give you pretty much whatever power delivery you want. I have tried all sorts on mine, from very progressive, to highly aggressive.. Just food for thought ..

cheers Ben, although since posting i have purchased in agreement with a forum user on her. Bluefin stage 1 with handset, for £185 :notworthy:
Cheap deal and has been cleared with Bluefin themselves.Which does free-up some funds for Possible Downpipe and Cat should she need to go a tad faster
:drinking:
Good to see you around Ben :happy2:

i have just read this thread and i thinkk a point is being missed ITS THIS DAMMED FORUM !!! , I KEEP SAYING MY CAR IS COMPLETE but then i read something or go to a meet and realize i NEED some thing else
the standard gti is a cracking car the ed 30 much much better i done my research on re maps before sticking with custom code who have done my 3 previous cars and i dont know why people dont give them more consideration , i dont want to alter the map , change fueling etc i dont know enough about it ! i just wanted to up the power a little which imo cc did a treat ! imo after stage 1 its in your head not in your car !!!! toms s3 is a brilliant example stage 1 and its awesome "faster "than most who have gone over the top but etto i suppose :driver:
-
^^^^
 I hear you loud and clear, Ian!
I keep telling myself that my car is complete too, but within the last half-hour Chris (WhiteGTI) tells me how great his new TD lightweight wheels are and why.
I need a nurse (hot and slender only please!).
-
i personally look at wheels as cosmetic and i think td s look horrible  oem , bbs or oz are the only way to go for vw s :happy2:

No, no, no!
You have it all wrong. Wheels are far from cosmetic.
Imagine putting Ronaldo in a set of Jimmy Choo designer shoes and putting him onto the field. Or worse, a pair of waders.
He would be slower and turning a corner would become a major hassle. Put him in some lightweight footy boots with the latest insoles, studs and cushoining and it makes him play how he should. :happy2:
Admittedly TD Pro race 1.2's aren't the newest or best, but for what they are designed to do, they do it very well.

Yes, they really do make quite a difference. Not just in outright accelleration, but in turn in, handling, suspension reaction time, braking and even fuel consumption :happy2:

I thought that when I first bought the k1. Then I got used to it and got revo. Now im used to that and I need more still.
Ultimately the k1 will be going stage 2 plus, and then once im 21 or 22 and I can get insured on a evo will be aiming for 500hp plus. I suppose it depends on your local area and whether you get a chance to drive it fast or not often to how you view things.
-
I know what your saying mate, i have just bought a tbe and am going stage 2 lol, not even got it yet and have been thinking about geting the kmd internals for the fuel pump then i can get the stage 3 bf map :jumpmove:
As ive said i think some people mistook what i was saying when i put this post up, i love my car and will always make it faster but in reality it is more than fast enough with the stage 1 map and yet im still spending money to make it faster... expensive hobby :scared:

Not getting Lucas exhaust now theres been some issues... Not sure what to do now, i had come to terms with spending a fortune and now im thinking i may just save the money and spend it something other than the car :rolleye:

you learn soo much more about road awareness learning to ride a bike than u do a car.
but then u need to cos of the speed a bike allows u to do. bonkers!

I was quite a late starter to cars at 20 i guess, biking since 16 and they were and are my first love and they definately do give you a greater sense of road awareness imo...

Same here, I have given up now as my 3 brushes tell me I am not cut out for it anymore.
If it were possible all new drivers should spend a day or two on a bike to let them see how there driving affects bikers.

you learn soo much more about road awareness learning to ride a bike than u do a car.
but then u need to cos of the speed a bike allows u to do. bonkers!
Same here, I have given up now as my 3 brushes tell me I am not cut out for it anymore.
If it were possible all new drivers should spend a day or two on a bike to let them see how there driving affects bikers.
If you ask me, some romper leathered up bikers need to spend a day or two in cars to see how their riding affects car drivers!!!
I know you can't label all bikers the same but around the Yorkshire/Derbyshire Dales bikers think they own the roads and I personally have seen more than my fair share of squashed and mangled bikes and bikers!!
There seems to be a trend for signs saying think twice think bike around here and for me it is the other way around.
Roads saying XXX bikers killed on here in the last 12 months basically signifies to me that they ride too hard and too fast for their own good and spend far too long on the wrong side of the road and overtaking where they shouldn't.
In all the years I've been driving I have never seen any more than one or two cars bridge the double white lines, but bikers think that they are there specifically to highlight that their overtaking area has just begun and I see it EVERY time I go out driving in Derbyshire.....It's unbelievable!!

10 mins on a bike and you'll see what i mean riding fast or not if someone isn't paying attention and pulls out on you when your doing 30-40 you better hope your gears good as its gonna hurt.

I used to ride bikes a long time ago and gave it up after my sister had a near miss by going under a lorry and coming out the other side without touching it  I thought she'd died and it put me off for life. I know exactly what you mean about car drivers, but now there are sooooo many bikers thinking they are Valentino Rossi, especially with the advent of more and more affordable, more powerful bikes over the last 10 years. I personally know of 3 people over the last year that have died through basically road racing against other bikes, plus one guy at work who was lucky not to be jailed for racing after the other bike hit a wall at 140mph!....Madness!

I agree every sunday you can here the shriek of aftermarket race cans blast along the straight that borders where i stay and they aint hanging about.

The amount of times I said 'And were supposed to look out for them!!!' when some idiot gimp either cut me up or haired past me missing my door mirror by a gnats nacker whilst in the Lakes last week!!! :angry015:
It became a bit of an in joke with me and the family! I can't beleive they have spent all this money telling car drivers to look out for bikers when they should be telling them to slow down and obey the rules of the road like the rest of us in cars/lorries etc are supposed to! :fighting:
[Rant over]
