Title: Rusty wings. I know, another thread.......
Post by: Mk5Dom on June 19, 2013, 04:38:10 pm
Just left work, before getting into the car I noticed paint peeling off the wing.
I was just curious to know from those of you that have been successful, what you think my chances are in comparison to your own experiences.

I'm going to the stealers tomorrow to pick some parts up, so I'll find out then.
However, I just wanted your views too.

Many thanks and apologies for another rust thread.
Angry Dom.

Just been yesterday to the VW garage in Carlisle to get mine looked at as there's bubbling appeared ever so slightly on both wings right at the top of the arch, bloke seemed very clued up on it and explained exactly why it has happened. All he did was take photos, the vin and mileage, got the impression he was fairly confident VW would deal with it, only problem was I might have to wait a while because courtesy cars are in short supply due to the number of golfs in for the same thing.

Cool, let us know the outcome.

I'm going into Wayside Aylesbury to pick up some parts at lunchtime. I'm going to ask them then but I know they don't have a bodyshop so I may have to pop over to Ridgeway Oxford instead?

I have the launch brochure and RedRobin's PDF in hand (just in case), but it sounds as if Volkswagen are being quite good about it now.

Had mine done at Citygate Amersham if that's nearer for you? Claim went through with no problems and very pleased with the job

Cheers Bud. If I have no luck with Aylesbury or Oxford, I'll deffo try Amersham as it's not too far away.
What was their work like? Good? Blending? Colour match?

Very happy with their work & the paint match is spot on. They even managed to liaise with the service department for a service & mot while it was there!

Oooooh sounds good!  ^^^

Anyway, just come back from Wayside. Warranty bloke came outside, had a look at the rust and checked the wing was OEM/original.
He then proceeded to the passenger side wing and said I'd rather replace this one too so we don't have you coming back 6 months down the line.
We had a good chat about the whole situation and I wasn't pushy but he knew that I knew all the details about the whole saga and I didn't even need Robin's PDF.
Pretty confident I wont get a courtesy car though as when I had it serviced there 6 months ago they informed me company policy was 21.

I asked him if it was a common problem on the Mk5's, but he didn't really give me a straight answer. (we know it is)

I do however have to go back tomorrow for paint readings. So good so far though, and on the whole very happy.
9am tomorrow morning = coffee + magazine + slyly removing RNS510's from the showroom + eyeing the fit bird on the reception desk.

 :happy2:

Bloke in Carlisle didn't even take paint readings or check if the wings had been replaced, basically said they'd be in touch and they would come and pick my car up, leave me one and take it to Newcastle to be sorted before dropping it off again.

Pretty decent service then!  :happy2:

Paint readings done. Report sent to VW UK.
Only doing the o/s now though, but eh oh can't grumble, I'll just have to take it in for the n/s one if it gets bad.

Booked in for the 8th July for 4 days, 100% costs covered by VW.

I'm allowed a courtesy car if I insure it myself........ Edition 35 will be nice.

Good result considering some are only being offered 50\70% goodwill  :happy2:

I got my passenger wing replaced last year...absolutely no issues what so ever, but like yourself I have to wait until the other wing gets worse before they will replace it  ...Ingrams VW in Ayr.

A guy at work however found a lot more than first expected. Rust on the wings, boot release handle, sills and rear arches.
VW said they will only cover the wings as the rear arch rust has been caused by the rear bumper rubbing againt the arches. Apparently they can tell it has been off and put back on too tight so it was not a case for warranty  ...he also has to cover 50% of the cost to repair the other areas...taking him for a ride if you ask me!!!  :stupid:

I heard they were taken to court recently after not honouring the warranty and now they don't think twice about replacing the front wings at the drop of a hat  :happy2:

That's interesting, I don't suppose you would know the details of that case?  As it could be used as precedent, and I'd definitely quote this if they are expecting 50% on other areas of the car. :happy2:

Unfortunately I don't know the details...I just got it third hand from the guy in work, who was told by the guy in the bodyshop. If I was him I would fight it and get as much covered under warranty as possible...think he plans on touchin in the tailgate himself

They didn't even check my service history for paint inspections, take any pictures or anything...just booked me straight in

This is the dealer i would use if i had to get any rust sorted. Fortunately, mines is ok atm and has not been painted from the factory.

Was their service ok? Workmanship?

The service was great, free hire car etc.
You couldn't even tell it had a new wing, perfect colour match and no overspray ;) ...they have a recall sheet aswell that shows the bodyshop how to install/ trim the new arch liner foam damper so it doesn't hold water against the arch again ;)

Only thing was phoning me 10mins before closing time and telling me to come for the car when I live half an hour away lol

"we'll hang about till you get here, hurry up its been ready since lunchtime"

Well don't wait till 10 to effing 5 then phone me!

Keep an eye on your arches, mine was perfect when I bought it then a year later..rust bubbles :/

Just dropped her off. Not liking the space on the driveway where she should be.
I just hope they make a good job of it and I can't wait to get her back!

All done, the texture is fantastic but the shade is only very very slightly out. Not too bothered though, glad to have her back.

If your not happy, take it back. Why settle for less...it's warranty work! :)

It's no wonder the colour match isn't perfect...they paint the panel before your car even arrives, never kind on the car lol

Id love to see proof of this claim as it would open up a huge can of worms if it is indeed accurate. My local VW dealership "Warranty Manager" stated the opposite to me, stating without hesitation or a smile on his face quote "If you came in here 2-3 months ago we would have replaced both wings for 100% however VW have changed their policy"......Im hoping what ur saying has some substence for the sake of all of us with this problem

I have heard the same as you , thats they have stopped paying for the 100% for wing replacement , and no wonder it must be costing them a fortune - think of how many Mk5s they have sold worldwide (and Passats as they have the same bother) , I had my 05 one done for nowt , looks like when the 58 plate one goes Im gonna be putting my hand in my pocket :(

It's only a couple of weeks ago that I was looking into this and there was absolutely no mention of me having to pay towards the work, now traded the the car in so didn't actually get the work done but surely if this was the case they'd have mentioned it at the very start of the process.

Im interested in this as mine has bubbling to both sides, its done 125k though and has predomininently VW service history.
Anyone got any ideas about how Skinners Group in Eastbourne are at dealing with these types of claims on the Mk5, or has anyone had good luck with this in the South East ie Kent/E/Sussex?.
Just wondering the best dealership in my area to try to claim from??!!..
Poll perhaps??

I've just emailed the dealer saying I'm unhappy with the colour match. Will ring them if needs be.
It's really playing on my mind now.
