Bit of a mismatch and not too sure why they didn't pitch the new S3 in there instead?!?! Worth a watch though and a surprise result.. :surprised:
-
Cheers for posting that, the new golf seems to be getting god reviews.
-
Surprised the BMW didn't perform up to expectations. Didn't really like the look of the Merc for some reason. Golf was lovely but that front bumper sticks out far too much IMO.
-
Total mismatch but the Merc does look tasty
-
Where's the RS3?
-
Where's the RS3?
That would have gobbled them all :signLOL:

Viva la haldex!
Would love to see a45 amg vs rs3/TTRS now!
-
For me it would be A45 > MK7 GTi > M135i
Although the M135i has been getting rave reviews and is obviously a much quicker car than the golf, i find newish BMW cars so boring! There drap and ugly and do absolutely nothing for me at all. At least the golf looks good and when you would have to live with the car for a while i find thats quite important rather than how well it goes in a straight line. The Golf also seems much more fun to drive.
I really like what Merc have done with the new A Class and think its a brilliant car, something they should of done with the A Class from the start. Bringing out an AMG version is just the icing on the cake and even better that its an AMG car that handles its power extremely well :driver:
-
Am i the only one thinking what is autocar doing racing cars on country roads with other road users?
I Imagined they would close the road or not at least show them racing past other cars.
moving on
That merc looks very nice!

I had the same thought when he was in the MK7 GTi and the cyclist came past the other way!
-
All of the mags do it suppose some
Just choose quieter roads.
-
All of that said, £ for £, id still choose the M135i over the Golf GTI. Maybe my decision will be different when the Edition 40 and Golf R are out, but both are going to be approaching the price of the A45 once options are ticked anyway.

No mate you're not. I was thinking the exact same tbh and although most journos seem to more than exceed the speed limit when you listen to what gear/revs they get to in certain cars (Top Gear / Chris Harris), I have not seen actual racing on an open highway before (at the top end of 4th gear), especially with other cars and even sheep about!!! :surprised:
Fail to see how this differs from what I did to a certain extent. Except that there was no corners or other road users in my case.. I'm not bitter though.. :signLOL:
-
Maybe it was shot on the Isle of Man so no speed limit

Maybe  Wouldn't take much working out though if they needed too.
Is it legal to race each other in the Isle of Man?
-
Will probably get abused for this statement but for me the bmw is a better looking car than the golf, its the one i would have.
-
wonder who supplies that new Diff in the MK7, and if its available to buy seperately!
-
.

On a bike, yes. :innocent:

Its a box of electrical trickery, so probably not.
-
I thought the performance pack gave you a proper diff and bigger brakes. :surprised:
-
^^^Yes it does. And 10PS extra too
-

Its not a "proper" diff though is it.
-
I thought it was a full mechanical diff? Must've picked up some misinformation somewhere.
-
Have a feeling that A45 is still going to have the legs on the RS3.. be an interesting battle.., off the public highway obviously.
It did properly dust the MK7 GTI didn't it, lol, to be expected with an extra 130hp though hey! :rolleye:
-
I get that the Merc is awesome, but I can't help but think it is very highly strung already, so hopes of X% increases may be a bit moon on a stick? It'll be interesting to see how it compares to the flagship models, RS3/1M. They praise the ride, every other mag slates it, trying to be the 'contrary' review or just reviewed by a clown??
M135i has won how may awards now??
Odd review being a big mix of ?WD and class of car. Interesting though. I do like the Golf a lot.
-
Think I prefer my MKVI Golf R at stage 2+ ......although a Golf R ain't exactly cheap yet either.
-
Where's the RS3?
That would have gobbled them all understeered into a ditch :signLOL:
fixed it for you
-
The MK7 Performance pack is a real Mechanical Diff.

have to be the AMG for me
there all great cars in there own right and small factors would influence in which order you would take them given the choice.
AMG certainly on my list of next cars to be considered, as is the new Skoda Octavia Vrs estate if i need something bigger

Boll0x the RS3 was quicker than the M135i on a track regardless of any reported understeer - and that's without any ARB/suspension setup tweaks
-
And Chris Harris was driving the rs3 like a cock too.
Oh and the BMW was pretty much on track day tyres whilst the Audi had mediocre continentals.
-
odd choices for comparisons :stupid:
just proves you have take reviews with a pinch of salt 'cos you don't know if there is any ulterior motives.......

agrred would drive all 3. also, these days practical considerations come into it for me - which has the biggest boot? which has the best rear leg room?

Is this like the 3 degrees of separation, every thread leads to someone trying to defend the pig on rollerskates that is the RS3? An amazing engine insulted by a sh*t chassis.
By everyone's reckoning, the fact it 'beat' the M135i (just) which is £10k cheaper and actually in a class with its lesser sibling the S3, is a good thing? Everyone forgetting its real peer was the 1M, which monstered the RS3 and given its already cult status and residuals, is fairing rather better.
So, the M135i only actually needs to be as good and as quick as the new S3. Oh. The S3 isn't actually close. Right, how are we going to deal with this then?
-
Modern Beema Petrols have cheated with turbos, BM's should have stuck to NA and kept everything fair.
Having said that the Beemas do have a half litre displacement advantage over the TTRS/RS3 and 1L over the S3... so who's getting the most out of engine size?... ... Mercedes 2.0T 355, lol.
-
2002 turbo? The N54 turbo 6 was good for well over 500hp.
EU regs have killed big power N/A. For everyone.
-
The SAAB 2.3 Turbo was good for 500bhp standard internals; same 2.3T 4 pot engine used in Pikes Peak (800-900bhp iirc).
&t=0m16s
That's all modifications though, I'm talking more about what cars come from the factory with.
Currently this side of the FQ400, the Merc "I think" has beaten everyone with a 355bhp 2.0T 4 pot... on disaplacement terms... from factory. Or was the Evo a 2.3??

It's because the rs3 isn't as bad as some would like to make out.
As for 1m it's a coupe, the rs3 is pretty much an estate.
TTRS vs 1m and the TTRS is quicker.
New s3 vs 135xi and the s3 is quicker in the 1/4 mile dash.
As for the Evo fq400 that doesn't count as it was modified by Owens developments

And who cares as your still not as fast as an r32 golf :star: :driver:

It says Araf Slow on the road, so must be Wales. Should have guessed that from all the sheep!
Autocar articles have previously said their favourite test road is in Wales, so this was probably it.
-
Oops, if you look at the GTI vs the Merc bit, you can see the GTI is doing around a ton (mid 4th gear), when the Merc has dissappeared. :signLOL:

Did somebody mention RS3 :P
Not that I have done it to mine yet, but Ive heard fitting MPS over the standard sh*te conti's and replace the rear antiroll bar, transforms the handling. (Not that Ive had any major handling issues yet, but Ive always hated contis)
-
I'd love for a road test like this to chuck in a modified edition 30 just to see how they rate it compared to the modern opesition.

would be very interesting through the twisties and on the straights once rolling but the traction issue from the off would mean the BMW and AMG would be over the hill :driver:
