Title: Got a fuel pump, updated with fitting pics
Post by: gazbutS3 on August 14, 2009, 02:40:20 pm
Picked up a new APR HPFP today, think I said I'd have 1 before the end of the month in the "too fast post", should have said the end of the week .

After a bit of research I went for the APR pump, there are other fuel pump options, you pay your money and make your choice as far as I'm concerned

I'm going to fit the pump tomorrow and will post some pics as I do it, would have done it today but I can't get a new follower untill the morning which I'm going to change while the pumps off.

Then it will be stage 2+ next week :happy2:

I'm sure of it,

sayin that the 08 on S3's had a sachs clutch as std instead of the LUK item that was fitted earlier, so I'm hopin it maybe a bit stronger, I do try to be nice to the clutch, not to many hard starts and I try not to load it to much in the higher gears :happy2:

ok fitted the pump yesterday, quite an easy job, took about an hour, but I was in no rush

first you need to remove the engine cover, we all no what a pain in the @rse that can be, just give it a sharp tug

then you'll see the pump on the righthand end of the engine

make sure you release the fuel pressure from the schrader valve

Title: Re: Got a fuel pump, updated with fitting pics

continued

disconnect the inlet and out let underneath, then disconnect the 2 electrical plugs and the remove the 3 bolts holding the pump to the engine and remove the pump

I got a replacement cam follower bucket as I thought I'd change it while it was in bits but as you can see from the pictures there was no signs of wear at all, the old 1 is on the left this is 14000miles old

fitting is the reverse of removal,  make sure you put a touch of moly grease on the cam side of the follower to help bedding in

New pump fitted, The pump comes with full instructions and is fairly straightforward, thanx for looking

Are you feeling the benefits now Gaz?  I ran my pump with Stage 1 software and found it much improved.

Couple of observations -

I know it's not in any of the supplied instructions but the factory repair manual does specifically state to have Cyl 1 at TDC before fitting a pump.

Make sure not to open the drivers door with the fuel pipes removed, you'll get wet.

Be careful if the door has been opened or the car run in the previous couple of hours as the system will be charged with pressure.

Not sure about the moly grease, is that in the APR instructions??  The follower is in the main engine oil path so my understanding is any lube on install should be engine oil only so as not to contaminate the engine oil.  One of the problems with the dodgy batches of internals was fuel passing through the shaft seal and making its way back to the sump.

Yes, the moly grease tip is in the APR instructions, its only a very small amount, a smear at the most

""if you are using a new cam follower, be sure to use some moly grease on the camshaft side of the follower for intial break in", copied from the APR destructions

I did put a note about depressurising the system :happy2:, you are supposed to disconnect the battery

It definately does feel more responsive running it with the stg 1 map, thought it was the placebo effect at first but the more miles I did the better it got, maybe adjusting itself a bit
