Title: RNS 310/SAT NAV
Post by: tdibilly on June 29, 2013, 11:05:44 pm
Ive bought a 2009/58rg golf & it has a rns 310 with sat nav, Its asking for a sat nav disc/media when i press the NAV button, does this radio need a disc inserted all the time to enable the nav to work, I presume i cant play cd's when the sat nav disc is in ?, so is the only option the SD card for playing music?, Any help would be great  including can i use ebay copy type discs? as e budget is rather tight?, Many thanks!.

I'm not sure about the 310 but with the 510 you get the option to install the maps or use them live from the disc.
I can't imagine that you would need the disc in as you have pointed out "how do you play CD's?"

I am surprised that you don't have maps installed or a map disc. Did you get the car from a dealer? If so, have a word with them.

The car had stood & went flat, the radio had a code error & went to vw, the maps were aparently lost but i only found this out when about to drive off, i had already held £200 back cos he only a had copy of the service history/book from vw, I have been looking for someone with a disc so i could try b4 buying if required, do the maps go onto sd card when installed cos i believe the 310 has no hard drive?, if so how big does the sd card have to be?.

RNS310 maps are stored on the SD card. You'll still need to get a CD though, as the RNS reads them off the CD and encodes them to the SD card. Internet suggests its a navigation CD rather than DVD so, allowing for a bit for decompression, I would guess you only need a smallish capacity SD card.

Maps data is not free to distribute, so unless you buy a genuine original disk from a dealer then it is more than likely a pirate copy. eBay disks for £30 are almost certainly someone downloading it from a torrent site, burning a CD and selling it on for a profit.
